Central Hotel Shanghai
Nanjing Road 4-Star Accommodation

Hey guys!
I'm Na Bong-soon, your go-to travel influencer.
I actually ended up traveling to
Shanghai, China, twice recently.
This time, my middle schooler son and I
spent a full week exploring Shanghai together.
While getting everything ready, one of my biggest dilemmas
was choosing the right place to stay in Shanghai.
Since we had such a packed itinerary for our family trip,
spending the whole time in a 5-star hotel felt like a bit of a waste,
especially since we wouldn't be spending much time in the room anyway.
Even so, I still wanted somewhere safe and clean.
So, I decided to book the 4-star Central Hotel, located
right next to the famous 5-star Grand Central Hotel
in the heart of downtown Nanjing Road. And let me tell you,
it was an absolute win!

During this trip,
I stayed at several recommended 3, 4, and 5-star hotels
across Shanghai.
Among all the family-friendly spots, this one was my absolute favorite
because of its cleanliness, great value, and fantastic location.
Let me share a detailed review of this gem!
1. Shanghai Hotel Location & Booking

The 5-star Grand Central Hotel is on the left, and the 4-star Central Hotel is on the right
When I chose the Central Hotel Shanghai,
the absolute biggest selling point
was definitely its location.
📍 Central Hotel
555 Jiu Jiang Lu, Huang Pu Qu, Shang Hai Shi, China 200002

Located right on Nanjing Road in the heart of the city,
Central Hotel is within walking distance of People's Square
and the famous Bund with its stunning views of the Oriental Pearl Tower.
Plus, with so many amazing restaurants surrounding it,
it's hard to beat this location when staying in Shanghai.

If you're coming straight from the airport,
it's about a 30-minute drive from Hongqiao International Airport
and around a 50-minute drive from Pudong International Airport.
Taxis are super affordable in Shanghai!
Since the hotel is just one block off the pedestrian street,
it was very easy to call and catch a DiDi (taxi).
It's also close to East Nanjing Road Station and Yuyuan Garden Station,
making subway travel incredibly convenient.

Nanjing East Road is the shopping heart of any Shanghai trip.
Because it's a bustling district packed with endless eateries,
many travelers choose to book their accommodations here.
Since I visited Shanghai twice in a row for longer stays,
I actually got to stay at several popular 3, 4, and 5-star hotels,
including the highly sought-after 5-star Grand Central Hotel right next door.
This means I can give you a really thorough comparison!

The overall room condition is quite similar.
The main differences are that the 4-star Central Hotel has a smaller lobby and no pool,
but rooms of a similar size are about ~$32 to ~$64 cheaper per night.

You can compare prices and locations of various Shanghai hotels,
including the Central Hotel, and book at a discounted rate on Agoda.

Especially when traveling with kids in Greater China,
where you often encounter strong spices and cigarette smoke,
I highly recommend aiming for something higher than a 3-star...
I'd highly recommend booking in advance.
2. Room Condition

Since we planned our trip last minute,
the highly budget-friendly rooms were already fully booked.
Instead, we stayed in a spacious and comfortable
Deluxe Queen Bed Room for around ~$102 per night.
On a weekday in March, a Superior Twin Room
that accommodates 2 adults and 1 child
was priced at around ~$83, which is incredible value.
If you're looking for a clean, well-located family stay,
this would be a wonderful choice.

We requested a high floor and were assigned to the 9th floor.
The room was 36m², but as soon as we entered,
it felt much more spacious and clean than we expected.
There was plenty of space, so we never felt cramped,
and the bed was plush yet offered the perfect amount
of support with crisp, clean sheets,
allowing us to get a fantastic night's sleep.
Shanghai Travel: Taoyuanxiang Foot Massage in Nanjing East Road
When exploring Shanghai, you end up walking all day,
making your legs so sore, but this room was perfect for a deep rest.
Plus, the famous Taoyuanxiang is located right nearby,
so we could easily go get a budget-friendly foot massage.

The overall room design had a warm, cozy feel with beige and wood tones,
and there was even a potted plant inside,
giving the space a lovely, refreshing touch of life.
I usually don't prefer carpeted hotel floors,
but it was so well-maintained and clean that it felt completely fresh.
Right by the entrance, there was a large luggage rack
where we could easily place our suitcases,
and next to it was a large wall-mounted TV
and a TV console with plenty of storage options everywhere.
The desk was also quite spacious,
making it super comfortable to get some laptop work done.

Right next to it, there was a round table, a 1-seater sofa, and a 2-to-3-seater sofa,
making it so convenient to bring in some snacks
and sit down comfortably to share them.

In one corner, mugs, tea, and an electric kettle
were neatly prepared.
The mini-fridge was stocked with various beers and soft drinks,
priced at around 15 RMB per can,
which is about ~$2.

The bathroom had a separate toilet, bathtub, and shower area,
making it very convenient to use with my son,
and the strong water pressure was perfect for washing away our fatigue.

The amenities like shampoo, conditioner, and body lotion
were neatly laid out,
and the drawer thoughtfully contained hair ties, cotton pads, cotton swabs, a razor,
and even a small sewing kit.

A weight scale and a hair dryer were provided,
and there were even two bottles of mineral water in the bathroom—
likely a sweet gesture for us to use when brushing our teeth.

The closet in front of the bathroom was quite large
and came with several hangers,
a mini safe, a large ironing board, and an iron,
so we could easily press our clothes.
Bathrobes were ready for us too,
and the disposable slippers were incredibly plush—
they actually seemed to be the exact same ones
provided by the Grand Central Hotel next door.
4. Hotel Facilities

The wide range of hotel facilities also caught our attention.

The 1st-floor bar also had a self-playing piano,
which was super fun to watch.

There's a Michelin Guide restaurant
on the 2nd floor, but unfortunately, we didn't
get to try breakfast or have a meal there.
I guess that just gives us a great reason to visit again!

On the 4th floor, we were able to enjoy
various hotel amenities at the Grand Shanghai,
including the fitness center.
5. Wrapping Up

I’ve shared my recommendation for a Shanghai hotel
located right in the heart of Nanjing Road—
a prime spot in downtown Shanghai. It's an ideal place
to stay not only for couples and friends but also
for those traveling abroad with kids.

You can also easily order delivery from famous cafes, restaurants, and grocery stores using local apps!
When looking for a hotel to stay with my child,
easy transportation and hotel safety were my top priorities.
Here, we enjoyed a completely stress-free stay and
had a comfortable rest in our clean, cozy room.
