While planning my trip to the Big Island,
one of the experiences I was most excited about
was definitely snorkeling at Captain Cook.
If you search for snorkeling in Kona,
so many different tours pop up.
After comparing a few options,
the one that everyone kept recommending was Captain Cook.
And now that I've actually been there,
I completely understand why it's a must-do.
Today, I'm sharing my honest review, from the booking process to the actual experience!
How did I book it?
The Kona Captain Cook Snorkeling tour
requires booking in advance.
Popular time slots fill up fast,
so if your dates are set, make sure to book early!
Please note that the local tour is conducted entirely in English.
However, you can easily ask questions and book online in advance to sort out any details before you go.
On-site, communication is entirely in English.

I went with the morning tour.
Since my travel itinerary was pretty tight,
the afternoon slot felt a bit awkward to fit in.
On the day of my tour, it was cloudy in the morning and cleared up in the afternoon,
so it was a little disappointing that it was overcast when we started.

Tour Day,
My excitement was high right from the start!
The departure point
is Keauhou Bay.
Since it's the closest harbor to the Captain Cook Monument,
the boat ride is short, which means more time in the water!
After checking in, fitting our gear,
and a brief safety briefing, we were ready to head out.
Even though it was cloudy with rain in the forecast,
I made sure to lather up with SPF 70 sunscreen.
Isn't it beautiful even with the cloudy weather? You have to see it with your own eyes.
Our boat was a small zodiac boat (rigid inflatable boat).
It felt like we were skimming across the waves at quite a speed.
Just feeling the wind in my face as we sped across the ocean
instantly made it feel like a real adventure.
As we rode along, the South Kona coastline came into view,
and the massive cliffs formed by hardened lava were absolutely majestic.
They even steered us right into a sea cave that larger boats could never fit into,
making the journey itself an incredible sightseeing experience.
They told us these are all coffee farms.
Finally, Captain Cook Snorkeling!
We dropped anchor in the waters right in front of the monument and jumped straight in.
The moment I dipped my head under, I knew this place was different.
The water is so incredibly clear
that you can see straight to the ocean floor right from the boat.
If you're lucky, you might even spot
sea turtles or wild dolphins!
Plus, school after school of colorful tropical fish swim all around you,
so there's never a dull moment.
I even saw a whole pod of dolphins!
They swam right alongside our boat—
talk about a serious stroke of luck! ✌️
The depth ranges from shallow spots of about 3 to 6 feet (1–2m) to pretty deep areas,
but the visibility is so amazing that you can see all the way to the bottom, even in the deep parts!
It’s the perfect environment for beginners
to fully enjoy themselves.
I spent a whole hour in the water,
but it went by so fast that I was wishing I could stay in even longer.
Light Snacks & Relaxing Time
Once you climb back on board after snorkeling,
you get to kick back with some tropical snacks and juice.
Who knew eating snacks in the middle of the ocean could taste this good?
Drying off in the sun while staring out at the beautiful sea is absolute bliss.
On the way back, we didn't just sail straight home.
We made detours to sea caves and hidden spots
along the Kona coast that larger boats can't even access.
It made the boat ride back so much fun and packed with sights.
Isn't the color of the water absolutely stunning?
I only wish it had been a bit sunnier,
but it was still incredible.
What to Pack for Captain Cook Snorkeling

By Hawaii law, only reef-safe sunscreen is allowed.
You can buy it locally, but... it's definitely on the pricier side there.

There is a lot of coral, so you might hurt your feet if you don't wear them!

They do rent out gear,
but I prefer using my own mask because it's so much more comfortable.

Honest Review
This was easily one of my absolute favorite
activities on the Big Island.
It wasn’t just about seeing fish—
the entire underwater landscape was on another level.
I’ve snorkeled in quite a few places,
but even as a solo traveler, I had the absolute best time!

honestly felt way too short!

If I ever find myself back on the Big Island,
booking the Captain Cook snorkeling tour
will be the very first thing on my list.

Q. Can I still join if I'm not a strong swimmer?
Absolutely! They provide flotation devices,
so you'll be completely fine even if you can't swim.
The guides keep everyone safe and sound,
making it super easy and fun for beginners to enjoy.
Q. Are dolphin or sea turtle sightings guaranteed?
Since they are wild animals, there's no 100% guarantee.
But if you're lucky, you can get up close
with pods of dolphins and sea turtles!
I only saw dolphins at Captain Cook, but it was still magical 😄
Q. Do I need to book the Captain Cook snorkeling tour in advance?
The popular time slots fill up fast!
Once your travel dates are locked in,
it's definitely best to book ahead to secure your spot.
The departure point is Keauhou Bay, which is closest to the Captain Cook Monument. You will travel on a small rubber boat, allowing you to explore lava tubes that larger boats cannot enter.
For the morning tour, check-in is at 8:45 AM and the return is at 12:00 PM. The afternoon tour checks in at 12:30 PM and returns at 3:45 PM. The actual time spent snorkeling in the ocean is about 1 hour.
Currently, there are no tours led by Korean guides, so communication on-site is only available in English. However, you can get your questions answered in Korean during the tour reservation and preliminary inquiry stages.
By law, only reef-safe sunscreen is allowed in Hawaii, so it is highly recommended to prepare it in advance. Additionally, we recommend bringing reef shoes as there is a risk of injuring your feet on the coral in the ocean.
