To start, the official name of the hotel is
Capella Shanghai, Jian Ye Li.
Even when searching on Amap in China,
it pops up instantly if you just search in English.
Located in Shanghai's cultural preservation zone, this property restored and renovated 1930s Shikumen-style townhouses,
allowing you to experience the harmonious blend of traditional Shanghainese and French architectural styles.
When I told my local Chinese friend I was staying here,
they praised my taste, saying, "You have incredible taste! How did you even think of going there? It's absolutely amazing!" (?)
The exterior of the hotel as seen from the outside
Rather than a single massive hotel building, it feels more like
a cozy village of houses, or perhaps the heritage walls
enclosing that village.
When I first saw it from the outside,
it didn't have that flashy, glittering aesthetic
we often associate with modern China. It felt understated, almost like
a wealthy estate from the classic movie 'Raise the Red Lantern'?
But the moment I checked in and stepped inside,
all my doubts evaporated.
This place was absolutely worth every single penny, especially for a special occasion like New Year's Day.

There are many different standards for calling a hotel
"truly exceptional,"
but one of them is...
'Something that only exists here,'
'Is there something that is only possible because it's in this exact place?' I often ask myself.
(This is a thought from the author of The Tokyo Hotel Directory, and I could not agree more!)
I'm looking for something that goes way beyond
just having great facilities.
And this place was where you could experience the history of old Shanghai with all five senses.
It makes you feel like you are stepping right into a chapter of the city's history.
A place that creates such a powerful sense of connection
is hard to ever forget.
It's just like how
a single selfie of you in a destination
is so much more precious than 500 photos of just the scenery.
Make sure to enter through the pedestrian entrance, not the main driveway where the cars go in.
(Though the cars you see as soon as you walk in are absolutely gleaming...)
The view welcoming you as you enter the gates of Capella Shanghai.
To your left is Pierre Gagnaire,
and to your right is the bakery.
I'm not entirely sure what that bedding display in the middle is about,
but there is a nice seating area right there, almost like a cozy cafe.
(You'll spot some incredibly elegant
locals sitting gracefully, chatting, and enjoying some treats.)

Starting from around ~$640 per night~
- While it varies slightly depending on the room type, the starting rates generally seem to hover around ~$640.
- Even with the most basic room category, you get an entire multi-story townhouse all to yourself.
Looking at the photos, I didn't see much of a difference other than the bed size, so I went with the entry-level room.

Even over the New Year holiday, the rates weren't wildly inflated.
- In Korea, peak holidays like New Year's or Christmas
usually mean hotel prices double instantly, but here they stayed quite stable.
- Maybe it's because Shanghai has so many incredible hotels,
but overall, the day-to-day rates felt very consistent.
I couldn't shake the feeling that Shanghai is a bit of a "showcase" city for China, and perhaps these reasonable hotel prices are part of that strategy.
✔️ While ~$640 is certainly a premium price tag
compared to other hotels,
when you consider you're getting a whole 4-story townhouse
(5 stories if you count the rooftop terrace!) all to yourself,
it suddenly feels like an amazing value.

Since I arrived well before the official check-in time, I only expected to drop off my bags,
but they incredibly offered to check me in early.
I was surprised and asked, "Oh, isn't check-in at 3 PM?"
and they told me that while standard check-in is indeed 3, they wanted to make me comfortable and get me settled early. I was so touched...
(Of course, this was only possible because they had clean rooms available, so let's not be *that* guest who demands it...!)
As you wait to check in, they serve you this lovely welcome tea.
The teapot was so stunning that I wanted to buy a similar one,
only to find out later that teapots that gorgeous are incredibly expensive.

The staff members spoke absolutely flawless English.
They explained every little detail so thoroughly during the check-in process.
Even though I had researched beforehand, there was so much to take in.
Determined to enjoy every single penny of my ~$640 stay,
I asked if they had all these details written down somewhere,
and they kindly printed out a copy just for me.

First, they give you a voucher for a complimentary cocktail
at the Pierre Gagnaire bar in the evening.

Since I was staying over the New Year,
they asked if I had booked a special dinner yet. When I said no,
they eagerly recommended a curated list of incredible local spots—
giving me some amazing recommendations!
They even offered to help book a dinner reservation if we needed!
Honestly, I was so touched I almost cried... T_T
But reservation? What reservation? I skipped dinner entirely and just knocked out.

To get to the
guest villas,
you have to pass through a heavy iron gate like this.
Super secure vibes! 🔒
When you first enter the guest villa area at Capella Shanghai,
you need your keycard to make it click open and let you in.
Even this design choice felt so incredibly thoughtful.
From the street to the reception desk,
the hotel feels completely open,
welcoming, and friendly to everyone.
But as soon as you head toward the villas,
this secure middle gate ensures
a perfectly private, safe, and peaceful stay.
In the video, the buildings on the right
are actually the private Capella Shanghai Residences.
To be honest, I was so incredibly jealous.
How rich do you even have to be to live here?! 😭
I stayed in Villa 408.
The Capella staff member who showed me to the villa spoke flawless English in the gentlest, most soothing voice.
And maybe it was just me, but he totally looked like a K-drama lead? 👀 Let's just say I was charmed.
But what really blew me away
was how, during the entire tour, the staff member
shared Shanghai's rich history
and
spoke about Capella Shanghai with so much genuine pride.
That sense of pride, born out of deep affection
for both the hotel and the city, was truly memorable.
A city with a story, a historical haven nestled right inside it, where the old and the new blend so harmoniously.
It felt like stepping into a space that was part museum, part art gallery.
There wasn't a single corner that hadn't been meticulously designed.
"We hope you find happiness within our history!"
That's exactly what the walls seemed to whisper.
Capella Shanghai 1st Floor:
Features the entrance, a first-floor terrace, and a cozy parlor.
Along with a sweet welcome card, welcome treats,
and beautiful welcome flowers waiting for you.
As soon as we walked into the parlor, the hotelier took off his shoes.
So I was like, "Oh!" and quickly kicked off mine too.
I mean, as a Korean, walking around a cozy indoor space in shoes feels so wrong anyway... so this was perfect! 👍
The parlor is actually quite spacious!
When you first open the front door, there's an outdoor first-floor terrace area, and from there,
you open another door to step into the parlor.
I absolutely loved how that was laid out.
I only wish the weather had been a bit warmer so I could have fully enjoyed the outdoor terrace!
Squeal!
For the welcome treats, they set out an insanely delicious cake and fresh fruits.
There was also a handwritten welcome card, plus a sweet "HAPPY NEW YEAR" card for the holiday!
Ahhh, so incredibly thoughtful! ❤️
And seriously, that slice of cake was out of this world.

Even though I'm not much of a dessert person,
it literally melted in my mouth
and I gasped at how delicious it was.
By the entrance, they also provide sturdy slippers and umbrellas.
Capella Shanghai 1st Floor (The Parlor)
I was shocked to find out these were all fresh flowers! 🌸😲
Such a plush, cozy sofa...
It would be so perfect to bring a friend here just to sit and chat.
This 4-story villa at Capella Shanghai is structured so that
the parlor connects straight to the stairs leading up to the 2nd floor.
On the way up,
there's a dividing door, and right before heading up the stairs,
you'll find a guest restroom.
There are two bathrooms in total:
one guest restroom on the 1st floor and another bathroom on the 4th floor
(a much larger one with a shower booth).
Just these two.
If you're in a rush, using the 1st-floor restroom is definitely more convenient!
Now,
let's head up and check it out floor by floor.
When we first checked in, the super friendly staff member
walked up with us floor by floor,
explaining what each space is for and how to control everything—
from the heating and AC to the automatic curtains. Step. By. Step!
Oh, and they carry your suitcases up for you as well.
So incredibly sweet.

2nd Floor:
Living Room
The 2nd floor is a living room that feels like a cozy parlor.
It's not visible in the photo, but there's a mini-fridge built into the wall.
All the non-alcoholic drinks, beer, and snacks in there are completely free!
(Any alcohol other than beer does incur a charge.)
On the table by the sofa,
there's a jar of the famous (though not exactly delicious) White Rabbit candy.
They also have a little comic book
that you're welcome to take as a souvenir.
Of course, it's all in Chinese so I can't read it, but it was too cute not to grab!
Capella Shanghai 3rd Floor:
Bedroom
Bed, Walk-In Closet, and Desk
Oh my gosh, I absolutely loved this room 😭😭
It was so incredibly cozy, and you can easily adjust those curtains.
Even if you don't do it yourself, when you return from going out,
the housekeeping staff will have lowered them so people can't see inside. So thoughtful!
And look, another pair of slippers!
The walk-in closet space
There's plenty of space to store your clothes and suitcases, plus a safe.
You can use the safe if you're worried about your belongings while you're away,
but honestly, everyone staying here is so insanely wealthy that I figured no one would care about my bags anyway, so I just tossed them on the floor 😂
I left everything in a messy heap before heading out, but when I came back,
they had tidied it up so beautifully!
Felt a little guilty, to be honest!
Shanghai hotels are so incredibly generous with bottled water!
There's water in the bathroom, on the desk, and even in the closet.

Let's stay hydrated and healthy!
Also, the writing instruments inside the pencil case on the desk
were so, so, so thoughtfully provided,
which was another touching detail.
Stationery geeks would cry tears of joy.
I wish I had more time to just lounge around here...
but there was so much exploring to do outside!
Fresh flowers here, too.
They also provide a menu of food and drinks
that you can order directly to your room.
You can even enjoy breakfast in bed.
Capella Shanghai 4th Floor:

The entire 4th floor was dedicated to the bathroom,
and it was absolutely massive!
Perfect for an epic selfie photoshoot.
This was so beautiful, too.
Fresh flowers even in the bathroom!
They were so gorgeous I almost wanted to pack them in my suitcase.
(Of course, that's a no-go;;)
Capella Shanghai 5th Floor:
Rooftop
Rooftop & Rooftop Windows
The staircase leading up to the rooftop is absolutely stunning.
And with the skylight above, the way the sunlight pours in
made me feel so incredibly happy.
It's shaded just enough so it doesn't get uncomfortably hot.
Honestly, I loved this space so, so much 😭
