Matsuyama has rapidly gained immense popularity, especially among Koreans, after the amazing news went viral that it offers everything from complimentary shuttles to free entry tickets for its top attractions.
If you've recently discovered Matsuyama and are now planning your adventure, you're probably brimming with questions about where to stay, the best areas in the city, and all the essentials for a smooth trip.
Today, I'm thrilled to share with you the absolute best areas to find accommodation in Matsuyama, alongside my top hotel recommendation!
First things first, let's explore the prime locations for securing your stay right in Matsuyama city!
As you glance at the map above, you'll notice four distinct areas that I've highlighted in orange for you.
Among these, Matsuyamashi Station, Okaido, and Dogo Onsen are three excellent areas to consider for your stay, whereas Matsuyama Station is definitely a place to avoid when booking accommodation.
Let me explain why, one by one, to help you make the best choice!
Matsuyama Station
When it comes to Matsuyama Station, it's easy to assume it's the city center since the city's name is right there in the station's title. But don't be fooled! This area is actually a little detached from the main downtown, and it's practically just the train station itself, standing quite solitary.
While it's not terribly far from the city center, evenings here offer little in the way of dining or entertainment options. If you choose to stay at Matsuyama Station, you'll find yourself with not much to do once the sun sets.
Its sole advantage is easy access to nearby towns like Uchiko or Ozu for day trips. Beyond that, it offers little else. So, my strong advice is to absolutely avoid booking your accommodation here.
Dogo Onsen
Next up, let's explore the Dogo Onsen area, nestled on the eastern side of Matsuyama city.
True to its name, this area is home to Matsuyama's iconic Dogo Onsen, a true landmark, and it's brimming with traditional ryokans and fantastic hot spring hotels. If your trip is all about a blissful hot spring retreat and pure relaxation, then this location offers some truly excellent accommodation options.
However, if I had to pinpoint a couple of minor downsides, you might find that the shopping streets tend to close earlier than anticipated, and surprisingly, quite a few restaurants also shut their doors relatively early here.
Furthermore, getting to the main city center can be a bit more inconvenient than you might like. Thus, for those whose primary goal is energetic sightseeing and exploration, this might not be the most ideal accommodation spot.
Matsuyamashi Station
Our third prime location is Matsuyama City Station (Matsuyamashi Station).
This vibrant area serves as a central hub where all tram lines converge, making it incredibly convenient. At its heart, you'll find the impressive Takashimaya Department Store, the iconic Kururin Ferris Wheel, and a delightful array of must-try restaurants. All in all, it's an excellent and highly recommended spot for tourists to book their accommodation.
What's more, it's just a pleasant walk away from Okaido, Matsuyama's largest and most bustling downtown district. For travelers with sightseeing as their main objective, you certainly won't regret choosing a hotel in this area!
I've just given you a quick overview of three key areas within Matsuyama city. But hands down, for your Matsuyama adventure, I firmly believe that the absolute best location to book your hotel is Okaido—no questions asked!
There are several reasons why, but let me explain them one by one:
First, it's Matsuyama's largest downtown area.
For people living in Ehime Prefecture,
Ookaido is synonymous with the 'city center,'
making it the most well-developed area in terms of infrastructure.
Most of the best restaurants and late-night eats are found here!
Next, it's also a fantastic spot for shopping.
With Mitsukoshi Department Store right at the entrance of Ookaido,
and Don Quijote just a short walk away,
it's a truly convenient location for all your shopping needs.
Finally, it's incredibly convenient for getting around anywhere.
You can walk to Matsuyama Castle, and it's not far from Matsuyama Station or Dogo Onsen,
meaning excellent accessibility to various tourist attractions.
While Matsuyama's city center isn't that large,
getting around by public transport can surprisingly take some time.
Ookaido is centrally located for everything,
so you won't feel a big burden no matter where you go!
These are the advantages Ookaido offers.
For these reasons, both times I've visited Matsuyama,
I chose to base myself in Ookaido for my travels.

The hotel I recommend in Matsuyama Ookaido
is none other than Candeo Hotels Matsuyama.
I stayed at this hotel during a family trip with my parents, and
the fact that it's right in front of Ookaido and
the advantage of having a large public bath in the hotel
made me book it without hesitation.
For a reservation price range, on weekdays for two people,
you can book for around ~$69 - ~$104,
while weekends are typically around ~$138.
By the way, Candeo Hotels also offers a pretty delicious breakfast,
so it's a good idea to include it when you book.

I chose the most affordable double room,
and I'll share my experience from my 2-night stay.
The hotel lobby is located on the 13th floor of the building,
so you'll need to take the elevator up first.
Guest rooms are on floors 5-12, while the 13th floor houses the lobby,
the large public bath, and the breakfast restaurant.
The lobby was truly sophisticated and luxurious.
Though it was built in 2015, it's still incredibly
well-maintained and spotless.
The staff member at the counter who checked us in that day
could communicate in basic Korean,
so we had absolutely no trouble with check-in.
We were assigned room 822 on the 8th floor.
The room was 17m2, which is slightly larger
than a typical business hotel room.
This meant we could lay out both of our suitcases
without any major inconvenience when moving around.
Most importantly, the bed was spacious and plush,
so my personal satisfaction with the room was very high.
As for room amenities, there were hangers and a deodorizer by the entrance,
and all the basics like a refrigerator and coffee pot were provided.
Among them, the refrigerator's performance was quite impressive.
It was powerful enough to create thin ice crystals
on drinks when left inside.
The bathroom wasn't spacious, but it did have a bathtub.
Many hotels with a public bath don't include bathtubs
in individual rooms,
so having one here meant we could enjoy a private soak.
Bathroom amenities included towels, a hairdryer, toilet paper,
and all the essentials like shampoo, conditioner, and body wash.
There was no need to bring our own!
What really impressed me was the room's view.
Even though it was a city view, there weren't many tall buildings,
so the unobstructed view was truly beautiful!
Since we were visiting with my parents, we had also
booked breakfast to be included in our reservation.
Breakfast is served from 6:30 AM to 9:30 AM,
and there's a surprisingly wide variety of dishes.
While the menu changes seasonally,
we were able to enjoy Ehime's famous sea bream dishes and jakoten (fried fish cakes),
along with various other Japanese home-style dishes.
Our satisfaction was incredibly high!
Today, I've shared my experience at the Candeo Hotel, which I stayed at with my parents
during my trip to Matsuyama, Japan.
Its prime location at the entrance of Okaido, Matsuyama's city center,
its public bath available for free use,
and the high-quality breakfast provided
all left both my parents and me extremely satisfied.
Given the excellent quality of all its facilities,
it's a place that will truly satisfy families or couples
looking for a wonderful stay.

Matsuyama Station is far from the city center, with very few restaurants or entertainment options nearby, leaving little to do in the evenings. While not extremely far from the city, it's essentially just a train station and therefore not suitable for accommodation.
Breakfast is served from 6:30 AM to 9:30 AM. You can enjoy Ehime's local specialties such as sea bream dishes, jakoten (fried fish cake), and a variety of Japanese home-style dishes.
Okaido is Matsuyama's largest downtown area with excellent infrastructure, making it great for enjoying restaurants and late-night snacks. Mitsukoshi Department Store and Don Quijote are nearby for convenient shopping. Matsuyama Castle entrance is a 5-minute walk away, and the tram to Dogo Onsen is right in front, offering excellent access to major tourist attractions.
The hotel lobby is on the 13th floor, and guest rooms are located between the 5th and 12th floors. The public bath and breakfast restaurant are also located together on the 13th floor.
As of September 2026, weekdays can be booked for around ~$83, and weekends for around ~$145.
