Planning a Fukuoka trip in 2026? Navigate Canal City Hakata like a pro with our guide to tax-free shopping, top stores, and how to make the most of your visit!
A must-visit shopping destination often at the top of any Fukuoka itinerary is none other than Canal City Hakata.
However, for first-time visitors, the complex layout can be a bit overwhelming, leading to questions like:
Where do I even begin?
How do I claim my tax refund?
I experienced some of that confusion myself during my visit last year, navigating the different sections.
In this guide, I'll combine my actual travel experience with the latest information for 2026, ensuring you have a seamless and successful shopping trip without any hitches.

Canal City Hakata is a massive multi-purpose shopping complex located conveniently near Fukuoka's Hakata Station.
✅ About a 10-minute walk from Hakata Station
✅ Easily accessible by bus from Tenjin area
It's consistently one of the top results when you search for shopping malls in Hakata during your Fukuoka trip, making it a truly iconic spot.
Operating Hours
Shopping Mall: 10:00 AM ~ 9:00 PM
Restaurants: 11:00 AM ~ 11:00 PM
Keep in mind that some individual stores might have different operating hours, so it's always a good idea to double-check their official website before your visit.
One of the first things that can catch visitors off guard at Canal City Hakata is its unique and somewhat intricate structure.
The complex is divided into several sections, including the Center Walk, North Building, and South Building, which can feel a bit like a maze. My personal recommendation? Snap a quick photo of the guide map as soon as you arrive. It will significantly improve your navigation efficiency and save you precious shopping time!

Crayon Shin-chan & Jump Shop
Location: Center Walk B1F, 1F
If you're a fan of character merchandise, these shops are an absolute must-visit!

You'll find an incredibly diverse range of merchandise from popular anime series like Crayon Shin-chan, One Piece, Dragon Ball, Spy x Family, and Haikyuu!!

The Crayon Shin-chan goods, in particular, really stood out to me. Shin-chan and his sister Himawari are simply adorable, and the depictions of their harmonious family life made these items especially heartwarming.

Donguri Republic (Ghibli Shop)
Location: Center Walk 1F
If you adore the enchanting world of Studio Ghibli, you absolutely have to stop by Donguri Republic.
Here, you can find a wide array of merchandise from beloved Ghibli films like My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki's Delivery Service, and Spirited Away, all in one magical place.

I particularly enjoyed browsing the unique baby items like bibs and rattles, which I hadn't seen much of in other Ghibli stores. It was such a fun discovery!
Honestly, if I were expecting, I would have bought them all on the spot!

Sports & Outdoor Stores
Location: South Building 1-3F
For those who love camping and outdoor adventures, Canal City might surprisingly become a favorite spot.

There's a substantial selection of outdoor brands and sports equipment stores, making for an interesting browse.
You might even find great deals on items like sneakers, often cheaper than back home once you factor in tax-free shopping!
Matsumoto Kiyoshi & Muji
Of course, no trip to Japan is complete without a visit to a drugstore!
Canal City conveniently houses both Matsumoto Kiyoshi (North Building 1F) and Muji (North Building 3F, 4F), making your shopping route incredibly efficient.
It was especially convenient for picking up last-minute essentials like pain relief patches, snacks, and household goods, especially on the final day of my trip.

One of the most frequently asked questions about shopping at Fukuoka's Canal City is regarding tax refunds.
Here's what you need to know, updated for 2026, to make sure you don't miss out on savings:
✅ Tax-Free Eligibility
You can claim a tax refund on both general goods and consumables when you spend a total of ~$31 (before tax) or more.
✅ What You'll Need for Tax-Free
Absolutely essential:
Original Passport
Credit Card in your name (if paying by card)
If paying by card, the name on your card must match the name on your passport.
✅ Canal City Tax-Free Counter Location
While some stores offer immediate tax refunds, for purchases aggregated from multiple stores, you'll generally process your refund at the Tax-Free Counter located near the 1st-floor Information Desk.
✅ Tax-Free Counter Operating Hours
10:00 AM ~ 9:30 PM
However, operating hours can vary depending on the season and current circumstances, so it's always best to avoid going too late in the evening.

Canal City is also renowned for its spectacular fountain shows, with schedules changing slightly depending on the season.
If you're eager to catch a show, I highly recommend checking the information board at the central fountain plaza for the day's performance times as soon as you arrive at Canal City.
