Is Cafe Sacher Worth the Hype? Our Honest Review
How to Skip the Lines at Vienna's Most Famous Coffee House
By TravelSun

Whenever you search for Vienna travel tips, the city's legendary historic cafes always top the list. Vienna is so deeply passionate about its coffee culture that it even has its own designated coffee styles.
During my recent trip to Vienna, my schedule was incredibly tight because of business meetings. I almost didn't have any free time to explore.
But I couldn't leave Austria without visiting at least one of Vienna's top three historic coffee houses. So, I decided to pull off an 'open run'—arriving right at opening time—to experience the famous Cafe Sacher!

Located right on the way to the Albertina Museum, Cafe Sacher is impossible to miss. During the day, you will always see a massive queue wrapping around the historic building.
But by opting for an early morning 'open run' right after they opened, I was able to walk straight in without waiting a single minute!

The interior of Cafe Sacher feels like an opulent, fine-dining restaurant. The deep red velvet accents and classic chandeliers create an incredibly luxurious and historic atmosphere.
There is also a boutique souvenir shop right next to the entrance where you can buy boxed cakes to-go, though it wasn't open yet during our early morning visit.

While the window seats on the second floor are highly popular, we were guided to a table on the first floor. The high-backed chairs were a bit tall and slightly uncomfortable, but the stunning decor made up for it.
The Menu: Original Sachertorte & Viennese Coffee

Since we were at the birthplace of the world-famous chocolate cake, we had to order the classic pairing: a slice of the original Sachertorte and a traditional Einspänner coffee.
Prices are definitely on the higher side. A single slice of Original Sachertorte is €9.90 (approx. $11 USD), and an Einspänner coffee is €7.50 (approx. $8 USD).
If you want to try other local favorites, the Wiener Melange (Viennese espresso with steamed milk and foam) is another highly recommended option on the menu!

Our order arrived quickly. While the coffee portion felt a bit small for the price, the rich, historic atmosphere made it feel like a worthwhile experience.
One pleasant surprise was the whipped cream. Unlike the sweet whipped cream common in many modern coffee shops, the cream served here—both on top of the Einspänner and on the side of the cake—is completely unsweetened. It was light, airy, and didn't leave a heavy aftertaste.

The Sachertorte is a dense chocolate sponge cake layered with tart apricot jam and coated in a thick chocolate glaze. I was shocked by just how incredibly sweet it was! Austrians definitely love their traditional desserts sweet.
Thankfully, the unsweetened cream and the strong, dark coffee helped balance out the intense sweetness. While the cake had a wonderful fruity undertone from the apricot jam, it was a bit too sweet for me to finish the whole slice.

Even though I had to leave a couple of bites behind, I am so glad I got to experience the authentic original recipe where it all began!

By arriving early, we completely bypassed the long lines and enjoyed a quiet, peaceful morning in one of the world's most beautiful cafes.
While Cafe Sacher is undeniably pricey, the combination of its opulent imperial atmosphere and the chance to taste the world's most famous chocolate cake makes it a must-visit on any Vienna itinerary. I highly recommend adding it to your trip!
