Busan Car Rental 2026: Do You Need One for a Yeongdo Day Trip?
Debating car rental in Busan? This guide shares a real experience from a 2026 trip, showing when public transport is enough and when a rental car truly shines, especially for Yeongdo.
Quick answer
- A car rental is not necessary for all areas of Busan, especially for central areas like Haeundae.
- A car rental is recommended for exploring multiple spots in areas like Yeongdo Island, particularly in bad weather.
- A 6-hour car rental for a Yeongdo trip cost around ₩30,000 (~$23).
- The KTX high-speed train from Seoul to Busan takes about 3 hours and 30 minutes.
- The bus ride from Busan Station to Haeundae takes approximately 1 hour.

While planning my trip to Busan (부산),
what I struggled with the most was transportation.

📍 Busan Station (부산역) (High-speed Rail)
206 Jungang-daero, Dong-gu, Busan
I traveled from Seoul to Busan by KTX 🚆,
but once I arrived at Busan Station,
I started wondering how I'd get around 🚗.

So, here’s the method I chose!
Instead of renting a car for my entire Busan trip,
I only rented one on the days and times I needed it.

On Day 1, I explored Haeundae (해운대) using public transportation ⛱️,
and on Day 2, for a day trip to Busan's Yeongdo 🌊,
I used a rental car.
After trying it out, I realized why renting a car only on the days you need it
was such a good idea.
I'll tell you all about it below.
Day 1 of My Busan Trip,
🚆 By KTX to Busan Station 🚆

If I were to drive from Seoul to Busan,
5-6 hours of driving seemed a bit too much.
So, I took the KTX
and traveled from Seoul Station (서울역) to Busan Station.
If You're Planning a Trip to Busan
‼️ Check KTX Seats First! ‼️
Even when I booked my KTX from Seoul to Busan two weeks before my trip,
most seats were already sold out.
I had no choice but to sit separately from my travel companion,
and since my seat was backward-facing, I felt a bit motion sick, which was tough.

After arriving at Busan Station,
I thought my trip would start right away!!
But I still had to take a bus to Haeundae 🚍.
(You can also take the subway.)
Having to travel for about another hour,
I found it a bit physically tiring.
And of course, it felt like a waste of time ⏰️.

📍 Haeundae
U-dong, Haeundae-gu, Busan
Still, since I planned to only explore the area around Haeundae that day,
I managed to get around without much inconvenience.

It was an itinerary where you could definitely travel
by public transportation without needing to rent a car.
Busan (부산) Travel Day 2,
🚗 A Day Trip to Yeongdo (영도) by Rental Car🚗

📍 White Yeoul Cultural Village (흰여울문화마을)
605-3 Yeongseon-dong 4-ga, Yeongdo-gu, Busan
The problem started with my trip to Yeongdo, Busan.
My Day 2 itinerary was planned as a day trip to Yeongdo.
I had to move between several places like
White Yeoul Cultural Village, Miffy Cafe (미피 카페), and more, and it was raining, so
I wasn't confident traveling by public transport.

So, only on this day!
I used a rental car, and it was incredibly convenient!👍
The weather wasn't great because of the rain,
but traveling by car made it so much easier.

When moving between tourist spots,
it was great not having to wait for a bus or hail a taxi,
allowing me to move around comfortably.

Especially if you're planning to visit multiple places like me,
using a rental car for a day
would be a pretty good option.
🚗Rented a car for 6 hours for my Busan Yeongdo trip, and
💰 it cost about ₩30,000 (~$23).

I used it for about 6 hours,
and the cost was about ₩30,000 (~$23).

Busan Rental Cars
Only rent on the days you need one!
Travel Style | Transportation Method |
Traveling around Haeundae | Public transportation recommended |
Yeongdo day trip | Rental car recommended depending on itinerary |
Visiting multiple tourist spots in one day | Compare rental car and public transport costs |
What I realized through this trip is that
there's no need to rent a car
for your entire Busan trip.

On days when you're traveling around one area,
like Haeundae,
public transportation was enough!

On days when you're exploring multiple places, like in Yeongdo (영도),
a rental car was much more convenient.
If your Busan (부산) trip itinerary only requires a rental car on specific dates,
why not rent one only on the days you need it, just like I did?
