Australia Sydney Blue Mountains
Free & Easy vs. Package Tour
ⓒ Ssoejini
Hello, I'm Ssoejini, your travel guide! :)
The Blue Mountains — a must-visit in Sydney and often ranked number one!
When I was planning my itinerary, my biggest dilemma was:
Should I go with a package tour for convenience? Or,
should I explore independently and just buy the Scenic World passes
separately?
I bet many of you are having the same thoughts, right?

Well, this time, as soon as I landed in Sydney,
I headed straight from the airport to explore! I experienced all four Scenic World rides, visited Leura Village, and even enjoyed a buffet dinner.
Having experienced it firsthand,
I realized there are clear advantages to going independently with pre-booked tickets
and also benefits to choosing a package tour for convenience!
So today, I'll share my experience, introduce you to the Blue Mountains, and compare the options!
1. Blue Mountains: Package Tour vs. Independent Travel Comparison
📍 Blue Mountains National Park
New South Wales, Australia
Wondering if a package tour is more convenient,
or if independent travel offers better value for money?
For those of you contemplating,
I've put together a comparison table!
Comparison Item | Package Tour | Independent Travel |
Itinerary Fatigue | Travel by car immediately after landing (tiring) | Sleep well in the city and depart at your desired time |
Course Flexibility | Fixed buffet restaurant, time limits | Explore Leura Village eateries + enjoy cafes at leisure |
Cost/Convenience | Waiting time due to group travel | Scenic World + Hop-on Hop-off Bus combination |

Paying on-site means headache-inducing currency conversions
and long queues.
Be smart and prepare your e-ticket in advance!

2. How to Make the Most of Your Scenic World 4-Ride Pass (200% Value!)

The absolute highlight of the Blue Mountains is, without a doubt,
the four Scenic World activities.
Here's my honest review of each ride.

Scenic Railway (Sceniscender)
Descending a cliff at a 52-degree incline is pure exhilaration.
The front seats are the best, so aim for them when you queue!

Skyway
Soaring 270 meters above ground in Australia's highest cable car,
it's spine-tingling when the glass floor reveals the canyon beneath your feet.

Cableway & Walkway
Take the cable car down and follow the forest walk (Walkway) to soak in the phytoncides —
it's perfect for relieving fatigue.

To be honest, one slight drawback is that during weekends or peak times, it gets crowded,
and you might have to queue a bit for the Railway.
But hey, popular spots always have a little waiting time, right?!
Still, being able to skip the ticket booth queue
and head straight to the turnstile saved a ton of time!

But package tour groups get in
much faster! ^^
It's moments like these I wish I'd booked a package tour, haha!
+ Plus, the convenience of transportation...
I always get so excited when I'm heading to a new attraction,
but by the time I'm heading back to my accommodation, I'm usually sighing with exhaustion... ㅠㅠ
3. Insider Tips for 'Australia Moohantour' Options (Featherdale Wildlife Park) – As Seen on TV!
When you check out the 'Australia Moohantour' packages,
famous for their Blue Mountains Sunset Tour,
you'll find a variety of options.
You might even find yourself with a bit of 'decision paralysis'!

I actually used this tour company for my Port Stephens trip,
and I was absolutely satisfied because they have official licenses and liability insurance!

Australia Moohantour is really popular with fantastic reviews,
and it's even featured frequently on entertainment shows and celebrity broadcasts, so you know it's good!

[City Pickup] Excluding Featherdale
Recommended for those who want a leisurely late-morning departure, skipping the zoo.
[Featherdale + Stars] Featherdale + Blue Mountains Sunset & Stargazing Tour
Quokkas, Koalas, Kangaroos + Sunset and Stars –
recommended for anyone who wants to see it all in one amazing day!

While I personally prefer to skip the zoo and focus on the Blue Mountains, Leura village, and the stunning sunset,
if you're keen to see adorable Australian animals up close,
then the 'Featherdale included' option is definitely for you!
You can simply pick and book the option that perfectly matches your preferences and energy levels, so keep that in mind!
4. Sydney Blue Mountains Tour Comparison: A Complete Guide

➡️ If you want to explore the Blue Mountains on your own terms, not just following the crowd,
and have a fulfilling, budget-friendly trip tailored to your own pace and condition,
then pre-booking your Scenic World tickets and going on a self-guided tour is the way to go!

If you're planning a trip for your parents, a family vacation, or simply prioritize comfort and ease,
then a package tour is highly recommended!
For the Budget-Conscious Explorer
Scenic World 1-Day Unlimited Pass + Bus Pass
If you want to cut out the 'package tour fluff' and just get your essential Scenic World tickets at a great price,
➡️ Scenic World Unlimited Pass
➡️ HoHo Bus
Honestly, if you're a fan of hiking or just soaking in grand natural beauty,
the Blue Mountains will absolutely blow you away with their incredible scenery!
Popular dates mean tickets can sell out fast,
so if your Sydney adventure is set, be sure to check out
the detailed itinerary in the link above! :)
A self-guided tour offers high flexibility in your itinerary, allowing you to depart from the city at your desired time and explore local eateries in Leura Village. Combining Scenic World with the HoHo Bus can also offer good value for money. On the other hand, a package tour might lead to higher fatigue due to immediate transfers upon plane arrival or fixed restaurants and time limits, but it provides the convenience of quick entry through group movement.
The Scenic Railway is characterized by the thrilling experience of descending a 52-degree cliff, with the front seats being considered the best spots. During weekends or peak times, you might need to queue for boarding, but preparing an e-ticket in advance allows you to skip the ticket counter line and proceed directly to the ticket gate, saving time.
Hojumuhantour offers two main options. The 'Featherdale Excluded' option is suitable for those who prefer a relaxed late morning departure without a zoo visit. The 'Featherdale + Blue Mountains Sunset Stargazing Tour' option is recommended for those who wish to see quokkas, koalas, and kangaroos, and experience sunset stargazing all in one day.
It's recommended to prepare an e-ticket for Scenic World in advance, allowing immediate entry via QR code. To enhance the convenience of a self-guided tour, you can also use the 'HoHo Bus Blue Mountains Explorer Pass'. Additionally, there's the '1-Day Unlimited Discovery Pass' which allows unlimited use of Scenic World's four attractions.
