The weather on Hawaii's Big Island in May and June
was a perfect mix of cool breezes and warm sunshine—
absolutely flawless early summer weather.
I'd say it was hands down the absolute best time to travel!
During the day, I wore light summer clothes,
but when heading out for the tour of Mauna Kea, the world's tallest mountain from base to peak,
packing a heavy winter puffer jacket was an absolute must.
Such a hilarious contrast in my travel wardrobe! haha
In today's post, I'm going to share all about
my experience at Mauna Kea, where I witnessed the best sunset of my life,

island-hopping across three Hawaiian islands:
the Big Island, Maui, and Oahu.
Among them, the Big Island completely stole my heart
with its raw, epic nature
and majestic landscapes. I fell head over heels!
When I was planning the trip, the thing I worried about most
was the Hawaiian weather.
Especially since the Big Island is packed with outdoor adventures—
from the high altitudes of Mauna Kea to night snorkeling with manta rays—
we really needed the weather gods
to be on our side!
So today, packed with my personal firsthand tips,
I'm sharing everything for those planning a trip soon—
from the Big Island weather and what to wear for different activities,

Cracking the Code on Big Island Weather in May & June
Based on my experience and research,
the weather in May and June on the Big Island
can be summed up in one word: a delightful, breezy summer.
Average Temperature: Warm days hovering around 25°C to 28°C (77°F to 82°F),
and cool evenings around 20°C (68°F).
How it actually feels: The sun is bright and glorious,
making every photo look absolutely stunning.
Yet, thanks to the gentle trade winds,
stepping into the shade instantly feels incredibly cool and refreshing.
With low humidity,
there's absolutely zero sticky discomfort!
To be honest, the day I landed was a bit overcast
with a splash of rain, so I couldn't catch
the sunset I had been dreaming of.
Since it's an island, passing local showers
are quite common, but luckily,
it cleared up quickly. For the rest of the trip,
I got to soak in the most gorgeous early summer weather.
From Volcanoes to Mauna Kea: Packing Strategy!
The Big Island spans everything from sunny beaches
to high-altitude peaks over 4,000 meters (13,000 feet) high,
so packing requires a bit of
strategic planning!
Daily Wear & Volcanoes National Park Outfits
Recommended: Short sleeves, shorts, sundresses, and other
light and airy summer clothing.
There was active volcanic activity when I visited,
so I was lucky enough to see an active volcano up close!
When trekking through Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, the sun is incredibly strong.
I highly recommend bringing a light long-sleeve shirt, a wide-brimmed hat,
and sunglasses.
Mauna Kea Summit Tour Outfits (Crucial!)
Recommended: Thermal base layers (like Heattech), thick sweaters, light down jackets,
plus a heavy winter coat, gloves, and hand warmers.
Mauna Kea is over 4,200 meters (13,796 feet) above sea level.
Do not let the word "Hawaii" fool you—it is freezing up there!
Even if the actual temperature is above freezing, the wind is so intense
that the wind chill easily drops below freezing (32°F).
Fortunately, my amazing Airbnb host
thoughtfully provided winter parkas for guests,
so I was able to bundle up and survive the cold!
I highly recommend either packing a heavy winter coat
or a long puffer jacket from home,
or simply booking with a tour agency
that offers puffer jacket rentals.
I'll share more details below on why

Mauna Kea Sunset & My Rental Car Story
When it comes to renting a car in Hawaii,
most people end up using Hertz.
I also booked a Hertz rental car for my entire trip,
but we ran into a minor vehicle issue halfway through.
Because of this little scheduling hiccup,

The weather on the Big Island in May and June
is great for water activities since the ocean temp starts to warm up,
but still,
since you're jumping in at night, you definitely need to wear
the wetsuit (for warmth) provided by the tour operator.
Watching those giant manta rays swim right up to your nose in the dark
was a bit thrilling, but mostly so majestic and graceful
that it left me with a lifetime memory.
