When I first visited Bếp Mẹ Ỉn nearly seven years ago, it felt like a secret alleyway hideout. Over the years, the word has definitely gotten out, and now it is a bustling hotspot for travelers looking for authentic Vietnamese flavors.

You will find it tucked away right at the end of this charming little alley right next to Ben Thanh Market.

Located right in District 1, it is incredibly convenient to visit if you are exploring the Ben Thanh Market area.

The overall vibe is fantastic, and they serve clean, beautifully presented, and incredibly flavorful Vietnamese home-style dishes. It is easy to see why it has become so popular.

Most diners end up in the vibrant main dining area downstairs, but if my memory serves me right, there is also additional cozy seating upstairs on the second floor.

The biggest downside of solo traveling? You cannot order the entire menu. I desperately wanted to try their signature fried rice, but knowing my limits, I stuck to just two dishes to start... plus a cheeky morning beer.

It was technically lunchtime, but since it was my very first meal of the day, let's call it a "breakfast beer."

Normally, I am a bit of a lightweight and avoid drinking during the day because it makes me sleepy. I usually save the drinks for late-night vibes. But travel has a funny way of rewriting your rules.

It all started with a story I saw on a friend's Instagram feed a while back. The exact quote escapes me, but the vibe stuck with me forever.

They were staying at a guesthouse in Europe, and the local host was casually sipping wine or beer early in the morning. When my friend asked, "Drinking already?" the host replied with something poetic along the lines of, "My friend, it's not about the time, it's about the state of mind..."

I wish I could remember the exact punchline because it was gold, but ever since reading that, I have embraced the joy of a relaxed daytime sip while on vacation.

You simply cannot visit Vietnam without ordering stir-fried morning glory (water spinach) with garlic. Along with that, I ordered a beautifully caramelized pork claypot dish that just looked too tempting to pass up.

I initially skipped ordering rice to save space, figuring I would manage. But as soon as I took my first bite...

...I realized rice was absolutely mandatory. That rich, savory, caramelized sauce cried out for a bowl of white rice. Even if I could not finish it all, I had to order a bowl. And honestly, it was so good I knew I would probably end up polishing it off anyway!

The rice arrived almost instantly, thank goodness. No long waits here!

Right around then, a group of five tourists sat down at the table next to me. They were debating their order, saying, "Let's not overdo it, let's just order five dishes total."

Meanwhile, here I was—a solo diner—happily sitting with three dishes all to myself! 😂

After placing their order, they still seemed worried, whispering, "Do you think we ordered too much?" I had to chuckle to myself. If only they knew I was tackling three plates solo right next to them!

Even the rice had a light seasoning to it (which made it incredibly delicious, albeit a bit salty). I knew I would be chugging water later in the afternoon!

Though I confidently ordered three dishes, the food coma was slowly starting to creep in.

Fortunately, the portions at Bếp Mẹ Ỉn are perfectly sized—not overly massive—meaning I was actually able to clean my plates without feeling dangerously stuffed.

These days, Bếp Mẹ Ỉn is incredibly popular, so you might run into a short wait during peak lunch or dinner hours. But trust me, the wait is absolutely worth it for the quality of food you get.

For travelers who knew about this place years ago, the new crowds and the buzz of English and foreign languages might make it feel less like a "hidden gem" than it once was. However, the flavors remain as spot-on and delightful as ever, making it a must-visit spot in Ho Chi Minh City's District 1.
