Packing List & Essential Tips
Unlike chilly Korea these days,
Australia boasts pleasant and warm weather,
making it the perfect destination for a trip.
Today, I'll put together a list of
Australia travel essentials and important notes
that are good to know before you depart.
1. Australia Travel Basic Information
2. Australia Daylight Saving Time & Time Difference
3. Australia Travel Packing List
4. Australia Travel Precautions & Tips
1. Australia Travel Basic Information

Australia Travel Basic Information

Currency | Australian Dollar (AUD) / 1 AUD ≈ ~$1 |

While Naver recommends April, September-October, and December as the best times to travel,
Australia is a vast country with different attractions to discover in each season.
Therefore, it's best to plan your visit based on your desired region and activities.
2. Australia Daylight Saving Time & Time Difference

Australia observes Daylight Saving Time
to make the most of the longer daylight hours in summer.
The period runs from the first Sunday in October
to the first Sunday in April.
To help you see at a glance,
I've outlined Australia's Daylight Saving Time periods and time differences for 2026
below.

Time Difference by Australian Region
Daylight Saving Time (~April 5, October 4~) | Non-Daylight Saving Time (April 6 ~ October 3)
Sydney, Melbourne | 2 hours ahead | 1 hour ahead |
Brisbane, Gold Coast, Cairns | 1 hour ahead
Perth | 1 hour behind |
Please note that Brisbane, Gold Coast, Cairns, Perth, and other regions do not observe Daylight Saving Time.
Be careful to avoid any confusion with flight boarding or tour meeting times.
3. Australia Travel Packing List

Based on the basic information above and my own experiences,
here's an Australia travel packing list for you.
ETA Application
Before entering Australia,
applying for an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) is mandatory.
It usually processes within a day,
but during peak seasons or the beginning of the year,
it might take longer than usual.
I recommend applying at least a week in advance.
I've posted separately about how to apply for an ETA.

Power Adapter
Unlike Korea, which uses 220 volts,
Australia uses 230 volts,
so a power adapter is essential.
Personally, I find adapters with
USB charging ports more convenient
than those with just the 'pig nose' (Type I plug) prongs.
Especially if you're like me and use multiple devices such as a laptop, watch, and phone while traveling,
I recommend the adapter below.

Sunglasses and Sunscreen
The saying 'Australian sun is on another level' is no joke.
Australia is the country with the
highest skin cancer incidence rate
due to UV radiation.
To protect your skin and eyes,
make sure to pack sunglasses and sunscreen.
4. Australia Travel Cautions & Insider Tips

These might seem minor, but if you don't know them, you could face fines or
even be denied entry to Australia.
I'll share some essential travel warnings and helpful tips that could make your trip smoother.

1. Taking Leftover In-Flight Meals
Sometimes, people take leftover bread or fruit
from their departing flight.
However, Australia has strict regulations on food imports, so
never take leftover in-flight meals off the plane.
While luggage isn't checked every time, random inspections do happen,
and I've personally experienced a bag check.
If you're caught,
you could face fines ranging from ~$730 to ~$1,460,
and in severe cases, even be denied entry.

2. Outdoor Drinking
Australia is also very strict when it comes to alcohol.
Unlike Korea, alcohol is sold in dedicated stores, and
drinking is not permitted outside of designated areas.
Even if the weather is beautiful, casually enjoying a beer on the beach or in a park
is illegal, so please be aware!
🍾 Major Alcohol Retailers in Australia:
BWS, Dan Murphy's, Liqourland

3. Avoid Unnecessarily Touching Wildlife
Even when you have opportunities for close contact with animals, such as taking photos with koalas,
there are times when you shouldn't actively touch them.
If you are in a situation where official animal contact is permitted,
staff will guide you on the allowed boundaries,
so please always follow their instructions.
And of course, even outside of these specific situations,
if you arbitrarily touch or harm wild animals,
you could be banned from entering Australia for life.

4. Weekend Dining Out Can Mean a Surcharge Surprise
Australia is known for its high labor costs,
which are even higher on weekends.
This additional labor cost is usually passed on to the customer.
Since an additional 10% to 15% is usually added,
I recommend cooking your own meals on weekends
or dining at street markets.

5. Australia's Unique Traffic System
Unlike Korea, where traffic drives on the right,
Australia observes left-hand traffic.
It's not just when crossing the street;
I've often found myself mistakenly heading in the wrong direction
when using public transport like buses and trams.
Also, in Korea, traffic lights blink green when they're about to change,
but in Australia, the red light blinks.
However, a blinking red light in Australia truly means the signal is ending very soon,
so it's dangerous to rush across at that point.
Even though it's a pedestrian-priority country,
I highly recommend waiting for the next signal to cross safely.

6. For Groceries, Head to Coles & Woolworths
Coles and Woolworths are
Australia's **major supermarket chains**, much like
E-Mart, Lotte Mart, or Homeplus in Korea.
Compared to typical convenience stores,
they offer a **much wider variety of groceries**
and **generally better prices**.
You'll typically find them within a 10-minute walk in most city centers
where travelers stay or pass through. So, if you need to stock up on essentials,
these two are your go-to spots!
Today, we've wrapped up everything from your essential packing list
to important tips for your Australian adventure.
I truly hope this post helps you plan an amazing trip!
I'll be back soon with more exciting travel insights.
