Auschwitz-Birkenau Visit 2026: Tour vs. Individual Booking Guide

If you've included Auschwitz in your Poland travel itinerary,

I highly recommend taking a tour.

Having visited myself,

the scale of both Auschwitz and Birkenau

was much more vast than I expected.

Rather than just entering and looking around a few buildings,

understanding what you're seeing,

and why such a place was created

made the experience far more meaningful when accompanied by explanations.

So, if you're visiting Auschwitz,

whether it's a guided tour or an audio guide,

I recommend opting for one of them.

1. Auschwitz: What Kind of Place Is It?

Auschwitz-Birkenau was

a concentration camp established by Nazi Germany,

operating from 1940 to 1945.

Approximately 1.1 million people

are believed to have perished here,

and today it is preserved as a UNESCO World Heritage site,

a museum, and a memorial.

In the exhibition halls, you'll see piles of victims' belongings, from their suitcases

shoes, clothes, and prosthetics, all stacked high.

Among them, the exhibition of human hair was the most shocking.

Furthermore, you can directly explore original spaces like the crematoria and barracks.

Honestly, throughout the visit, ​

I felt a continuous sense of heaviness.

This is not a tourist destination for seeking entertainment.

You should be prepared for your heart to feel heavy

during your visit.

Nevertheless,

the significance lies in witnessing a history that must never be repeated,

and confronting its gravity in the very spaces where it unfolded.

It's a place worth visiting when traveling in Krakow, Poland.

Therefore, rather than simply rushing through it,

it is highly recommended to understand what you are seeing

as you explore.

Whether to choose an individual self-guided tour

or a deeply historical guided tour

depends on your travel duration and budget.

2. Auschwitz Camp Tour Price Comparison

3. How to Book Auschwitz

Here's one important thing to note.

From March 2026, Auschwitz admission tickets

can only be booked online.

That way, you can maximize your viewing time.

If no slots appear, it means they are sold out.

4. How to Get to Auschwitz from Krakow

① By Train

Kraków Główny (Krakow Central Station) → Oświęcim Station

(Kraków Główny → Oświęcim)

→ From Oświęcim Station, it's a 25-minute walk.

- Travel Time : 1 hour 5 minutes ~ 1 hour 40 minutes

- Fare : 18 Złoty

② By Bus

Krakow MDA Terminal → Direct to the Museum

- Travel Time : 1 hour 25 minutes

- Fare : 27 Złoty

If you're visiting independently,

the bus that takes you directly to the museum entrance is

much more convenient.

And,

for round-trip transportation (about ~$15) + an audio guide (about ~$15),

around ~$29 should be sufficient.

5. Important Notes for Your Visit

✅ Only bags smaller than 35x25x15cm are allowed.

Larger backpacks and suitcases must be stored in paid lockers.

✅ Make sure to bring your passport or ID.

Your identification will be checked upon entry to confirm it matches the booking name.

✅ There's very little shade, so bring bottled water.

✅ Although it's mostly flat with no steep inclines,

the museum grounds are vast, requiring a lot of walking, so comfortable shoes are a must.

✅ While there's no official age limit, the museum does not

recommend visits for children under 14.

Please keep this in mind when planning your trip.

It can also be beneficial to watch a relevant film

before your visit.

The profound weight of experiencing the actual place,

compared to seeing it in a film, was

heavy, shocking, and poignant beyond what my humble words

can express.
