My husband and I embarked on an unforgettable road trip through Mount Aso and Kumamoto in mid-November 2025, picking up our rental car in Fukuoka.

While the freedom of a rental car journey is fantastic, we quickly realized that variables like travel time and road conditions can add unexpected twists to your plans.

I hope our firsthand experience can offer valuable insights for anyone planning a similar adventure.

We were so surprised when traffic started backing up shortly after getting on the highway.

We set off around 10:00 AM from Hakata Station with our rental. Unfortunately, we hit a highway construction zone, which added significant delays to our journey.

The drive from Fukuoka to Mount Aso is typically about 2 hours and 20 minutes (approximately 100 miles), but our schedule started to fall behind right from the start.

Since unforeseen variables like this can easily crop up, I highly recommend starting your Aso adventure as early as possible.

Our first stop was Kusasenri. The sprawling fields along the way offered some truly magnificent scenery.

Having lived in places with beautiful natural landscapes, the sight of horses grazing on vast grasslands felt somewhat familiar. Yet, the constant volcanic steam rising from the earth was utterly mesmerizing and unique.

At Kusasenri, we also had a great time browsing the adorable Kumamon souvenirs. Just a heads up, parking here costs ~$3.

Our next destination was the Nakadake Crater, right next door. While these two spots are close, the crowds can sometimes make the short drive take longer than expected.

Parking at Nakadake cost us around ~$6.

Access to the Nakadake crater is sometimes restricted depending on volcanic activity, but thankfully, it was fully open on the day we visited!

We were able to get incredibly close to the constantly rising white steam and the unique, quarry-like geological formations.

It’s definitely a landscape you won't easily find in many other parts of the world, and it remains a truly impressive memory for us.

After exploring Kusasenri and Nakadake, we headed towards Aso Monzenmachi.

We arrived much later than planned, around 4:00 PM, and many shops were already closed, which was a bit disappointing.

Still, we managed to wander around Aso Shrine and sample some local snacks like Tanoya’s cream puffs and horse meat croquettes.

To truly experience the charming shops of Aso Monzenmachi, it’s probably best to arrive a bit earlier.

As we drove towards Kurokawa Onsen, the sun began to set, painting the sky with the most beautiful colors.

The scenery was so captivating that we pulled over, stopped the car, and simply stood there, soaking in the gorgeous sunset for a while.

Taking this leisurely moment to admire the sunset made me realize that this was a special experience we wouldn't have had on a non-rental car trip.

The ability to slow down, pause, and enjoy the scenery at your own pace, without a fixed schedule, is truly one of the greatest appeals of a rental car journey.

Finally, we arrived at Kurokawa Onsen. By the time we got there, around 6:30 PM, it was already dark.

We had hoped to see Kurokawa's illuminated night scenery, but we learned that the light-up event only runs from late December through late March.

Soaking my feet in the warm water melted away all the fatigue.

Even without the night illuminations, a relaxing foot bath in the warm onsen water and a stroll through the charming village were incredibly refreshing.

Many roads have no streetlights at all, so be aware.

The drive from Kurokawa to Kumamoto City at the end of the day was a bit daunting, as it was a dark mountain road with very few streetlights.

I felt reassured thanks to my husband's extensive driving experience, but for novice drivers, I’d strongly recommend coming down the mountain before sunset for safety.

After this rental car journey through Mount Aso, my biggest takeaway is that allowing for extra buffer time in your schedule to account for travel variables is key to the best possible itinerary.

If we were to do another Mount Aso road trip, we'd definitely start earlier and plan to stay overnight at Kurokawa Onsen.

This trip also taught us that while the itinerary is important, how and where you rent your car is equally crucial for a smooth experience.
