My brother and I usually visit Japan quite often, both for business trips and leisure travel.
This time, we enjoyed a truly independent trip, bringing along my nephew and son!
We visited in early summer, and it was already getting hot.
While searching for indoor attractions in Fukuoka to visit with kids, I remembered the Anpanman Children's Museum.
Years ago, my nephew was so excited at the entrance, playing around, that he missed the admission closing time and ended up crying his eyes out because he couldn't go in.
This time, my nephew was so eager to get in that it was our first stop as soon as we arrived in Japan!
We dashed straight to the Anpanman Children's Museum, one of the best places to visit in Fukuoka with kids.
I'll tell you all about its location, what to play, and what to see.
1. Location and How to Book
It's a fantastic indoor attraction to visit with kids, rain or shine, any season.
But if you're looking for a place to go, especially during the sweltering summer, this is it!
However, it generally has a kids' cafe vibe, so I'd say it truly captures the interest of preschoolers, or at most, children in early elementary grades.
That's why my son, who's a respectable middle schooler, spent his time separately at a nearby shopping mall.
My sister-in-law, my 6-year-old nephew, and I entered the Anpanman Museum, one of Japan's must-visit spots.

Children under one year old can enter for free, and typically, adult and child tickets are around ~$14 per person.
You can conveniently book in advance via Klook at a discounted price, and even pay in your preferred currency.
You won't have to queue at the ticket booth; simply present your voucher directly for entry, making your visit much smoother.
Your purchase is confirmed instantly, but please note that entry is only valid on your specified date.
Cancellations are possible up to 24 hours in advance, so feel free to book with peace of mind!
If you arrive right for the opening, starting about 5 minutes before, various Anpanman characters come out towards the Hotel Okura A elevator, which leads to the museum entrance, to greet the children. Keep that in mind!
It's close to Exit 6 of Nakasu-Kawabata Subway Station, about a 7-8 minute walk, so it wasn't a difficult journey at all.
Within walking distance, you'll find Nakasu River,
Don Quijote Nakasu Store,
And if you walk straight along the market street,
you'll see Kushida Shrine,
which is also great to explore as part of a combined itinerary.
2. Diverse Activities & Entertainment
The Anpanman Children's Museum, a must-visit spot in Fukuoka,
is an indoor wonderland housed under a grand glass arcade,
meaning you can let your little ones run wild and have a blast in various zones, no matter the weather!
It's a perfect destination not only for a summer trip to Japan, but also for chilly winters,
and even rainy days, as you can visit any time.
So, if you're planning a family trip to Fukuoka with your little ones,
make sure to add it to your itinerary!
Even though we visited just before the summer season officially kicked off,
it was still an incredibly diverse children's museum with so much to see and do.
As befits a popular Japanese attraction,
around the 2026 summer vacation season,
from Friday, June 19th to Wednesday, September 16th,
the water play plaza will also be open.
Featuring characters that spin 360 degrees and spray water,
along with tipping buckets for some delightful water fun,
this facility lets you enjoy a playful splash. So, it's a good idea to wear clothes you don't mind getting wet,
and bring a change of clothes too!
Kids can also create their own Anpanman sun visors,
an activity that takes just 5-10 minutes using their own drawings.
In the large central plaza, Yanase Takashi Theater,
located at the heart of the museum, you can watch shows featuring Anpanman and his friends,
and even dance along!
Beyond that, there are also various other performances like the Joy Theater and Panel Theater,
all designed for kids to have an absolute blast.
If your little ones are full of energy,
they can burn it all off in the ball pit and play zone.
My niece/nephew even spent a long time enjoying the sand play area.
My niece/nephew played so happily, even making friends and playing house with Japanese kids she'd never met before.
From the very beginning of our Fukuoka trip,
it was nothing but smiles all around!
3. Delicious Food & Souvenirs
At such an adorable Japanese travel destination,
even as an adult, browsing the merchandise here was pure joy!
The souvenir shops and restaurants are also filled with charming things,
offering a diverse range of cute sights and delicious treats.
You'll find souvenirs like bags, mugs, and dolls on display,
and a wide variety of food options, including Anpanman dumplings and bread,
crepes, milkshakes, Dippin' Dots ice cream,
and even hamburgers.
There are four main shops and eateries here:

A bakery that bakes fresh bread daily, featuring the faces of popular characters like Anpanman, Baikinman, and Shokupanman.

A shop where you can enjoy various Anpanman character games and shop for exclusive merchandise.
Dokin’s Heart Shape Cafe

A lovely dessert cafe themed around Dokin-chan.
While everything is adorable, a small bowl of kids' udon is ~$9,
and omurice is around ~$13.
Since the prices were a bit high, we played to our heart's content
and then headed to the market right in front of the museum
to a famous ramen spot and ate until we were absolutely stuffed.
Limited edition items and menu offerings change frequently,
so before you visit Fukuoka, Japan,
I recommend checking their official website at least once.
There was a wide variety of souvenirs too, like T-shirts, bags, keyholders, and storybooks,
but just one doll key ring, about the size of my palm,
was around ~$14, so keep that in mind.
The 'Anpanman who can pose' that my niece chose
is a doll designed with movable, posable arms and legs,
priced at 2,750 yen including tax,
and measures W150 x H205 x D95mm.
There was also a Baikinman version, which was adorable.
My niece carried it, hugging it tightly throughout our entire Japan trip.
4. Wrapping Up Our Visit to the Anpanman Children's Museum in Japan
I've just shared our delightful visit to the Fukuoka Anpanman Children's Museum –
a half-day that felt like a special gift, kicking off our free-and-easy trip,
especially for my niece who, years ago, cried uncontrollably in front of the museum after missing the closing time.
With exciting performances and hands-on experiences in a comfortable indoor setting,
plus adorable merchandise, delicious meals, and even delightful desserts,
it's definitely a Fukuoka must-visit if you're planning an itinerary with preschoolers or younger elementary school kids.
This museum is an indoor attraction with a kids' cafe atmosphere, primarily appealing to children from preschoolers to early elementary school age. For older children, such as middle schoolers, spending time at a nearby shopping mall might be more suitable.
The museum is located inside a shopping mall at 3-1 Shimokawabata-machi, Hakata-ku, Fukuoka, Japan, on the 5th and 6th floors. It's easily accessible, about a 7-8 minute walk from Nakasu-Kawabata Station (Subway Exit 6).
Operating hours are from 10 AM to 5 PM. Admission is free for children under one year old. For adults and children, it's around ~$14 per person, but you can book in advance at a discounted price on Klook.
A water play area will be open from June 19 to September 16, around the 2026 summer vacation season. You can enjoy simple water play with characters that rotate 360 degrees and spray water, and a bucket that spills water.
At the museum's restaurant, a small children's udon is about 1,400 yen, and omurice is about 2,100 yen. For souvenirs, a palm-sized character key ring is around ~$14, and the 'Strike a Pose Anpanman' doll is 2,750 yen including tax.
