You're likely hearing a lot about Alipay, and for many, it can be a real headache.
If you run into an error while trying to register your card on Alipay, it's easy to feel frustrated, wondering why it's not working for you.
When your departure date is looming and you're stuck at the card registration stage, it can really drain your energy before your China adventure even begins.
I've been revisiting the Alipay app recently as I prepare for my next China trip, and after a while, it felt a bit confusing to navigate again.
Most of the errors people encounter during Alipay card registration aren't due to user mistakes, but rather a lack of understanding of Alipay's specific system characteristics.
Make sure to download the Alipay app and create your account while you're still at home.
If you wait until you arrive in China, local network conditions might complicate things even further.
Fortunately, foreigners can pre-register using their home country's mobile number or email address.
I personally registered using my US mobile number.
I highly recommend completing the Alipay app installation, login, real-name verification, and card registration at least 2-3 days before your departure.
Often, the reason Alipay card registration doesn't work isn't an issue with the card itself, but rather a hiccup in the preceding step: passport real-name verification.
The photo scanning stage is usually the trickiest part.
When scanning your passport photo, it's better to use a dark, matte background rather than a bright one.
Passports also have holograms, so taking a picture directly under fluorescent lighting often causes glare, making it difficult for the AI to read the text.
So, use a dark background and scan your passport in a well-lit area where direct light doesn't hit the passport.
Also, when performing facial recognition, make sure to remove any glasses or hats.
Verification typically finishes within minutes, but it's good to remember that it can take up to 24 hours.
Older guides might suggest using a 'Tour Card' button, but now you can simply register your card directly from the 'Bank Cards' menu on the main screen.
Once you register a card with Alipay, you can make payments up to $5,000 per transaction.
Alipay recently increased this payment limit for foreigners.
However, be aware that if your real-name verification isn't properly completed, you might not be able to use balance inquiry services or some other features.
While Alipay worked perfectly for most of my previous trips to China, there were rare occasions when internet problems prevented me from using it.
To be prepared for such situations, always carry at least one physical Visa or Mastercard that allows international payments.

Ultimately, Alipay's system security policies are beyond user control, so calmly following the guidelines and trying again is often the quickest solution.
