Surviving an Abu Dhabi Airport Layover: Lounge & Overnight Stay
How do you pass 14 hours at Abu Dhabi Airport?
Hey there, fellow travelers! Melissa, your global explorer blogger, here.
I'm finally getting around to writing this today, 10/07/2026. Many of you flying to Europe often choose Etihad Airways for its affordable fares.
I've flown with them twice. The first time, my layover was short and sweet. This last trip? I somehow opted for a whopping 14-hour layover!
Let's just say, I'd like to have a stern word with my past self. So, consider this my survival guide to Abu Dhabi Airport.

1. Abu Dhabi Airport Pearl Lounge Review
📍 Zayed International Airport
Al Matar - Zayed International Airport - Abu Dhabi - United Arab Emirates

On my way back home, I had one of the worst layover times imaginable. I knew I'd have to figure out how to kill time at the airport.
My flight arrived in Abu Dhabi around 7:30 PM, but my connecting flight back to my home country wasn't until 9:30 AM the next morning – a truly dreadful 14-hour wait! (What was I thinking?)
If I had arrived earlier in Abu Dhabi, I might have considered an airport tour, but with such an awkward arrival time, I decided against leaving the airport.

Follow the signs for the Pearl Lounge. The airport is quite large, but it's not too hard to find. The pathway to the lounge is in the middle of the right photo.

I briefly considered staying at a nearby airport hotel, but they weren't exactly cheap, so I gave up on the idea. I truly regretted that decision later! LOL.
Anyway, let's continue with the lounge review.

I was able to access the lounge using my Priority Pass (PP) card. You can also purchase entry using The Lounge app.
When I presented my boarding pass, the staff member noticed I had about 14 hours until my next flight and sternly informed me that lounge access was limited to 4 hours. I already knew this, but I wondered how they'd actually enforce it.
Would they really hunt us down and kick us out after 4 hours?

The lounge was incredibly crowded. While it wasn't too bad when I first arrived, by 10-11 PM, it felt like an endless stream of connecting passengers poured in.
It was so busy, and I was so tired, I didn't manage to get many photos of the lounge interior. Here's a quick summary:
✔️ No comfortable recliners.
There are some long sofa benches along the walls, but it felt awkward to lie down on them. There really isn't anywhere comfortable for an extended stay. The sofa-like chairs are not ideal for sleeping.
✔️ Food is mostly Middle Eastern cuisine.
I'm usually not picky, but the Middle Eastern food here honestly didn't suit my taste. There were some fruits and salads available, so those might be your best bet. Beer is also available.
✔️ The air conditioning is blasting.
If you plan to spend a long time here, definitely bring a long-sleeved cardigan or jacket. The AC was exceptionally strong.
So, about that 4-hour lounge limit – do they really kick you out?
It's a bit of a yes and no situation.
Despite the uncomfortable chairs, I managed to doze off. I was in a light sleep when an announcement woke me up – they were calling our names! We were already planning to leave soon anyway, as the seating wasn't great. We gathered our belongings and headed out, only to find the counter swarming with people. Nobody seemed to be checking who was leaving.
This lounge, like many others, doesn't have a system where you check out when you leave. Even if we had only stayed for an hour, they likely would have still called our names.
The bottom line: No one actively hunts you down to force you out, but they do make announcements if your time is up.
With 10 hours still left on our layover, we decided to move to a dedicated sleeping spot.
2. Recommended Spots for an Overnight Layover at AUH
Before I even entered the lounge, I made sure to scout out potential sleeping spots. I knew I'd likely end up needing one!

The best place to catch some Z's at Abu Dhabi Airport is near Gates E and F.
Follow the gate signs and take the escalator down. Typically, when you arrive for a connecting flight at Abu Dhabi Airport, you'll be on the second floor where all the duty-free shops are. However, Gates E and F are on the first floor, which is a bit unusual.

Once you descend, you'll immediately see comfortable chairs perfect for resting. It was around 8 PM at this point, and there was hardly anyone there. I remember thinking how clean and quiet it was – truly ideal for an overnight stay – as I looked around.

There's a whole section of chairs that recline, almost like business class seats on a bus, allowing you to put your feet up. Opposite them is a cafe-like area that isn't open at night.

Right in front of the cafe, there are also spacious sofa seats. While you could lie down here, they didn't look particularly clean (being fabric sofas), so I wasn't too keen. If you're looking for the absolute most comfortable place to stretch out, this is probably it.

After spending 4 hours in the lounge, I returned to this spot, and it was packed! Just like the lounge, people were pouring in. Most of them seemed to be from the Middle East. With so many people around, I was a bit worried about my luggage and couldn't fall into a deep sleep.
Everyone was bustling about, some quite sweaty. I meticulously wiped down my seat with a wet wipe before lying down, and I got some curious stares... haha.
All I wanted was to find out my gate number for my flight home and head there. The seats were comfortable, but the crowd made me uneasy.
3. Waiting at Your Gate for Your Flight Home
Honestly, the most comfortable place to be at Abu Dhabi Airport is right at your departure gate.
The gate areas aren't completely open spaces; they're separated by automatic glass doors. You can only enter the waiting area after your ticket is checked, typically about two hours before your flight's departure time. It felt like they announced the gate access quite late, which was a bit frustrating.

Once inside, it felt much more relaxed. This area is generally cleaner and more pleasant since it's only for passengers scheduled to board that specific flight. There's also a restroom, which, though a single stall, is very well-maintained and convenient.

Although not visible in the photo, there are a few of those reclining chairs I mentioned earlier, as well as a good number of sofa seats. You can also charge your phone here, but competition for outlets can be fierce (I couldn't get one!).

My verdict after experiencing a 14-hour layover at Abu Dhabi Airport, using both the lounge and attempting an overnight stay?
I will NEVER book a ticket like this again. (Absolutely not!)
I chose this awful connecting flight because it was the cheapest, but it was just a long, uncomfortable waste of time with no opportunity to explore outside the airport. If you're forced to choose such a long layover, I strongly recommend spending a little extra for a shorter wait, or better yet, paying for a hotel near the airport.
It was truly an exhausting experience. Seriously... don't follow in my footsteps!
