Searching for a unique dining experience in Haeundae's Banyeo-dong area, I stumbled upon a true hidden gem:
79 Quán, an authentic Vietnamese restaurant that instantly caught my eye.
Even before stepping inside, the vibrant colors of the signboard screamed 'local Vietnamese eatery' – and it certainly delivered on that promise!

79 Quán is tucked away slightly off the main road, so keep an eye out for its distinctive blue signboard to guide you in.

The sign clearly displays '79 QUÁN' and 'Vietnamese Restaurant,' making it easy to spot.

The moment you step through the door, the Southeast Asian vibe intensifies. It’s more than just a restaurant; it’s an immersive experience.
Near the entrance, they even sell Vietnamese groceries, transporting you from Busan to a bustling local eatery in Vietnam, if only for a few moments.

As I walked further in, I noticed balloons and birthday decorations. My first thought was that there might be a private event or reservation.
I visited around 5:30 PM for an early dinner on a Sunday, and the restaurant was surprisingly quiet. I initially wondered if it was open, but a friendly staff member quickly seated me, easing any concerns.

Looking at photos from other blogs and even the restaurant's menu, it seems the decorations change with the seasons. (The menu even showed pictures of Christmas decor!)

So, don't be surprised if the interior looks a little different when you visit!
Discover Nha Trang Cuisine: A Must-Try!
The menu at 79 Quán is incredibly diverse, offering everything from classic pho and fried rice dishes to banh xeo, fresh spring rolls, salads, steamed dishes, and grilled specialties. You'll find options perfect for a casual meal or even a hearty feast. Prices typically range from ~$7 to ~$14, making it a budget-friendly choice.

What makes this place truly special is its focus on dishes from the Nha Trang region of Vietnam. You'll find unique items like Banh Beo Nha Trang and Salads Nha Trang. If you're a foodie looking for specific regional Vietnamese cuisine, this is definitely a spot to check out, as Nha Trang dishes are quite rare in Busan!

However, I wasn't aware of this regional specialty during my visit. For a relatively light dinner, I ordered Hu Tieu (~$7), Bun Cha (~$7), and a Banh Mi (~$5) as a little dessert.

My order was taken by a native Vietnamese speaker, and it appeared they were managing both the front-of-house and cooking duties solo (though this might differ on weekdays, as I visited on a Sunday evening).

It took a little while for the food to arrive after ordering, but that just meant everything was being prepared fresh, which I appreciated!
Generous Portions & Fresh Flavors
Hu Tieu, Bun Cha, and Banh Mi Review

This was my first time trying Hu Tieu, and it was a delightful surprise! Unlike typical beef-broth pho, this soup featured a clean, refreshing seafood or vegetable broth. It was packed with fresh ingredients like shrimp, squid, tofu, and quail eggs.

It offered a wonderful change from the usual pho experience, which I really enjoyed.
Cilantro and bean sprouts were served separately, allowing you to customize your bowl. If you're not a fan of cilantro, you can simply enjoy the clean, cool broth as is.

The Bun Cha also came with a generous amount of fresh vegetables, along with grilled meat and fried spring rolls. (Note: Cilantro is already mixed into the Bun Cha.)
While I initially expected the traditional Bun Cha served with a dipping sauce, this version was more of a mixed noodle salad. A slight departure from what I envisioned, but the sauce was delicious, and the overall balance of flavors was excellent.
Both the Hu Tieu and Bun Cha were very satisfying, making them great choices for first-time visitors.

The Banh Mi was quite large, with a wonderfully crispy exterior. Inside, it was filled with cilantro and other fresh ingredients.
The flavor was great, but personally, I felt the filling was a little sparse compared to the size of the bread.

Still, the unique texture of the banh mi bread was fantastic, and it was a good option to share as a light addition to our meal.
If you're planning to have banh mi as your main dish, you might find the filling a bit lacking.
Pros and Cons of 79 Quán
First, the generous portions were a huge plus! Both the Hu Tieu and Bun Cha were around ~$7 each, and I never felt like I wasn't getting enough for the price.
Second, the authentic flavors truly stood out. This wasn't a watered-down, Korean-style adaptation; it had the distinct aromas and authentic taste of true Vietnamese cuisine.

Third, the staff member was incredibly friendly. Despite managing orders and cooking alone, their service was smooth and welcoming, making for a comfortable dining experience.

There were a couple of minor downsides, too.
For those who rely on local payment methods, it's worth noting that 79 Quán does not accept the Dongbaekjeon card, a local Busan currency often used by residents.
Also, during my visit, it seemed like one person was running the entire operation. This means that during peak hours, you might experience a longer wait for your food.
I didn't use the parking, but there appeared to be space for 1-2 cars directly in front of the restaurant (the blue area in the image below indicates potential parking spots).

Ultimately, while 79 Quán is located in Haeundae, it's in the inner Banyeo-dong area. I'd recommend planning your visit around other nearby attractions like the Banyeo Agricultural and Fisheries Market or the Haeundae Arboretum. (I actually stopped by after visiting the arboretum myself!)
I'd definitely return if I'm in the Banyeo-dong area again, and next time, I'll make sure to try some of their special Nha Trang dishes!
