When planning any European adventure, the first thing on your list should always be booking transportation. Train and flight tickets across Europe can be pricey, and they only get more expensive the closer you get to your departure date. Trust me, securing these early is a game-changer!

How to Get to Zermatt

💡 Traveling from France to Zermatt, Switzerland:

Strasbourg → Basel SBB

Basel SBB → Visp

Visp → Zermatt

This journey was expected to take about 5 hours, but due to a missed train connection, it ended up taking me 6 hours. If I hadn't purchased the Swiss Travel Pass, I would have had to buy another ticket for a hefty sum, making the missed connection even more frustrating.

(★Starting from Strasbourg made it relatively closer. If you depart from Paris, expect about 7 hours of travel time!)

If your Swiss trip is around a week long, many travelers base themselves in the Interlaken area and use their Swiss Travel Pass for day trips or overnight stays to Zermatt or other nearby towns.

Exploring Zermatt, Switzerland

Zermatt is a bit of a challenge to reach even within Switzerland! Our main goal was to see the majestic Matterhorn and enjoy a scenic train journey, so we designed our entire itinerary around Zermatt.

The reason Zermatt can be tricky to get to is that it requires significant travel time and there are no direct trains. However, with careful planning of our route and the convenience of the Swiss Travel Pass, we managed to get there without much difficulty.

Not only did I get to see the iconic Matterhorn, but I was also lucky enough to witness the golden Matterhorn at sunrise – a sight so rare it's said only those who've accumulated good karma over three generations get to see it! That lucky person was me. Phew!🍀 (I hope everyone reading this gets to experience it too!)

A winter trip to Switzerland isn't complete without a mountain railway journey, is it?! There was no way I was going to miss it!

Take the Gornergrat Railway, which ascends to one of the highest points in Europe, for an up-close view of the Matterhorn.

💡Gornergrat Ticket Cost in Zermatt:

Adult: 126 Swiss Francs (approximately ~$156)

Child: 63 Swiss Francs (approximately ~$78)

You'll receive your Gornergrat boarding pass and an information leaflet. Make sure to keep your boarding pass safe, as you'll need it for your return journey.

The winter views from inside the Gornergrat train are something I'll cherish forever. It was so stunning that I spent the entire ride gazing out the window and capturing every moment with my camera.

A quick tip: the bus from Zermatt station to your accommodation is also free with the Swiss Travel Pass! With all my luggage, and a crowded bus, it would have been a nightmare to buy tickets on the spot. The pass truly saved me a lot of stress and hassle!

Swiss Travel Pass: First Class vs. Second Class

I opted for a First Class Swiss Travel Pass and had the opportunity to experience both First and Second Class carriages.

If you're traveling with heavy luggage daily, or with young children or elderly parents, I highly recommend First Class if your budget allows.

(★Keep in mind there's a significant price difference, but Second Class is perfectly comfortable and sufficient for most travelers.)

First Class felt incredibly spacious and comfortable, similar to a premium cabin on a high-speed train. There were almost always empty seats, so much so that I could often keep my luggage right next to me when the dedicated storage areas were full.

Second Class is used by many travelers, and while some say you might have to stand if it's crowded, I didn't see anyone standing during my trip.

Good news for families: when purchasing your Swiss Travel Pass through Waug, children under 16 years old can often travel for free!

‼️For children aged 6-15, they can travel free if a parent holds a Swiss Travel Pass and obtains a Family Card. (★Family Cards can be purchased at any Swiss train station.)
