Is fresh mungtigi available on weekends in Daegu? I visited Yukwaehan Mungtigi Main Branch to find out. Here's my honest take on the raw beef experience!
When planning my trip to Daegu, South Korea, one question dominated my thoughts:
Could I truly savor authentic Mungtigi on a weekend?
Mungtigi, a specialty raw beef dish and one of Daegu's "10 Tastes," is all about same-day slaughter for that unique, chewy texture. Visiting on a weekend meant I was worried about finding a spot that could deliver on this promise.

My journey took me all the way from Jeju Island to Daegu, and I was determined to experience a truly authentic Daegu raw beef restaurant. My parents, who live in Daegu, usually frequent a particular Mungtigi spot, but it's closed on Saturdays. So, I turned to the internet and discovered Yukwaehan Mungtigi, which became my chosen destination.

Yukwaehan Mungtigi's main branch in Daegu is conveniently located in Seongdang-dong, Dalseo-gu, near Seobu Bus Terminal Station on Subway Line 1. I visited on a Saturday, and perhaps because it wasn't a day for fresh slaughter, the restaurant wasn't particularly busy, even during prime weekend dinner hours.

Mungtigi (Medium): ~$31
Gopchang Jeongol (Intestine Hot Pot): ~$26
Brisket & Oduregi: ~$28
Our group of four ordered three different dishes. Beyond Mungtigi, the menu offers a wide selection, including Gopchang Jeongol (spicy intestine hot pot), Chadol Sashimi (thinly sliced brisket sashimi), and Oduregi (grilled beef cartilage), providing plenty of choices for different palates.

Honestly, when you think of a top Mungtigi restaurant in Daegu, you instantly anticipate that signature, incredibly sticky-chewy texture. However, on the day of my visit, there was no same-day slaughtered beef available. This meant I couldn't experience the distinctive, clingy chewiness that truly defines Mungtigi.
While it looked incredibly fresh, the texture was more akin to Yukhoe (Korean beef tartare) or Yuksashimi (beef sashimi) rather than traditional Mungtigi.

Dipping it in the sauce certainly made it enjoyable, but if you're specifically hoping for the authentic, traditional Daegu Mungtigi experience, you might leave feeling a tad disappointed. On the upside, when ordering Mungtigi, the staff does inform you whether same-day slaughtered beef is available, so you can make your choice based on your preference. Since this was my first time trying Mungtigi, I went ahead with it, but next time, I'm definitely aiming for the freshly slaughtered option!

The Gopchang Jeongol, or intestine hot pot, tasted sweeter than we expected. It didn't quite suit my family's palate. Instead of a rich, deep flavor, it leaned more towards a broadly appealing, sweeter profile.

We also ordered Oduregi, a grilled beef cartilage dish with a fun, crunchy texture. It was a new experience for us; even my parents, who live in Daegu, hadn't encountered it before. Our curiosity led us to try it, and while the texture was certainly memorable, the flavor itself wasn't particularly extraordinary.
Truth be told, this dining experience left me feeling more disappointed with the service than the food itself. The dishes arrived quite slowly, which interrupted the flow of our meal. Furthermore, getting the staff's attention and receiving a prompt response was a challenge, which certainly dampened our spirits. What made it more frustrating was that the restaurant wasn't even particularly busy, so there wasn't a clear reason for the slow service.

Overall, this spot might be perfectly fine if you're just looking for a casual drink with a side dish or two. However, if you're visiting with family, like I was with my parents, or if you're specifically seeking the quintessential Daegu raw beef experience, you might want to consider your options carefully. My choice was somewhat limited due to the weekend visit.
If your Daegu trip allows for a weekday visit, I highly recommend seeking out other established Mungtigi restaurants that guarantee same-day slaughtered beef. My hope is that sharing my experience helps you plan your own unforgettable culinary adventure in Daegu!
When the reporter visited on a Saturday, freshly slaughtered *mungtigi* was not available, so they couldn't experience its unique chewy texture. However, they mentioned that the restaurant informs customers in advance about the availability of freshly slaughtered *mungtigi* when ordering.
In addition to *mungtigi* (medium ~$31), you can order *Gopchang-jeongol* (tripe hotpot, ~$26) and *Yangji & Oduregi* (brisket & cartilage, ~$28). According to the article, the *Gopchang-jeongol* broth tasted sweet, and while *Oduregi* has a distinct crunchy texture, its flavor itself was not particularly special.
