Hello, everyone! I'm Vyumallang, your travel influencer.
If you're planning a trip to Yufuin, make sure to book your accommodation first!
Surprisingly, the popular ryokans get booked up really fast.
When you imagine a ryokan, places where you can fully enjoy everything from a multi-course kaiseki meal to an in-room hot spring often come with a pretty high price tag!
So, I set out to find a place where I could enjoy a private hot spring experience without breaking the bank.
Here's my honest review of a Yufuin ryokan stay!

1. Yufuin Ryokan Recommendations

My criteria for choosing a Yufuin ryokan were mainly twofold.
It shouldn't be too expensive, and I had to be able to enjoy the hot springs privately!

And that's how I discovered Akari no Yado.
While it varies by room type, you can book rooms starting from the ~$73 range, making it quite a popular ryokan for those who prioritize value for money in Yufuin accommodations!

And it's not just one typical public bath; there are different styles of hot springs available on the 1st floor, 3rd floor, and even the rooftop!
Rooms come in a wide variety, from twin rooms to Japanese-style rooms and family rooms, including options for 3-4 people, making it an excellent choice for family travel accommodations.
2. Booking Your Yufuin Accommodation

Akari no Yado's prices tend to vary depending on the room type and whether meals are included.
Especially if you're aiming for great value in a Yufuin ryokan, I highly recommend comparing several different stay dates and room types!
You can even opt for packages that include breakfast or a full kaiseki dinner!
For reference, I booked a twin room for around ~$73! Haha.
I really wanted a Japanese-style room, but even booking a month or two in advance was too late 🥹
Tip! Use a discount code to save even ~$7 when you book!

3. Akari no Yado

Check-in was available from 3 PM.
(No early check-ins allowed!!)
There's a luggage storage area on the first floor, so we dropped off our suitcases, grabbed lunch, and then returned.

Since you can reserve hot spring usage times during check-in, I recommend arriving as close to the check-in time as possible to secure your preferred slot.
I arrived early, starting around 2:40 PM?
I was the first to check in and also booked my onsen time ahead!

Bicycle rental service was also available!

This time, I stayed in Twin Room 201WR!
I originally considered a Japanese-style room,
but it was already fully booked.
So, I ended up choosing the available twin room,
and it turned out to be really comfortable and satisfying once I settled in.

My twin room had beds placed side-by-side,
and a wall-mounted TV right in front,
so I even relaxed by watching Netflix in the evenings.
The view was a combination of mountain and countryside, which was fantastic because it was so open and unobstructed.

Air conditioning, a hairdryer, a desk, and a lamp –
most of the essentials were well-provided.

Inside the closet, there were yukata and indoor slippers,
along with a safe.

There was even a mini kitchen with a microwave, electric kettle, and a sink!
It seemed like it would be perfectly convenient for extended stays.

The bathroom wasn't huge, but it was kept impeccably clean.
Since I'd be showering in the communal bath anyway, it didn't really matter!
4. Yufuin Family Onsen Accommodation

Time to put on my yukata and head to the onsen bath!

By the way, you could also pick up yukata for children on the first floor!
A great tip for families traveling with little ones!

What I loved most about Akari no Yado was, of course, the onsen!
There are three different ones in total,
and each has a unique atmosphere, so you can choose the one you prefer.
The 1st floor features a high-temperature rock bath, the 3rd floor a semi-open-air bath,
and the rooftop operates as an open-air bath.
From 3 PM until nighttime, it operates by reservation,
and you can generally use it in 40-minute slots.
When checking in, you first reserve your preferred onsen,
and if all guests have completed their reservations,
you can even make additional reservations for any available slots in the evening!

We initially used the semi-open-air bath on the 3rd floor,
and personally, this was my favorite.
Remember to flip the sign before entering!

The bath was spacious enough for a family of four, with room to spare,
and even though it was cold outside, we could enjoy the warm onsen comfortably.
Even 5 or 6 people would fit perfectly!

Next to it, there's a washing area, just like in a public bathhouse,
so we could even take a warm shower before leaving.

The changing area and hair dryers outside were also perfectly equipped!

In the evening, after dinner, with some time left,
we made an additional reservation for the rooftop bath and used it the next morning.

The rooftop definitely has an expansive, open feel,
so if the view is important to you, I'd highly recommend it.
However, the bath itself was much smaller than the one on the 3rd floor,
and the shower facilities were also outdoors,
so personally, I preferred the 3rd floor.

Still, it's not a large public bath that you share with others,
but rather a system where we could set our own time to use it privately, which was very convenient.
Because of this, I felt it would be particularly well-suited for those looking for a Yufuin ryokan with private family baths!!

We also played with the cats and had drinks at the 1st-floor lounge~
We spent a wonderful 2 days and 1 night, even enjoying sushi we bought from the supermarket.
So, I've shared my honest, self-funded review of this Yufuin Ryokan accommodation!
Akari no Yado is a place I'd recommend to those who prioritize reasonable prices + private onsen.
