I recently took a multi-generational trip to Gangwon-do

with my parents and my child.

After watching the historical drama The King's Man,

my parents really wanted to visit Yeongwol.

So, we headed out on a family day trip

and ended up having an amazing culinary adventure

with some of Gangwon-do's most famous local eats.

Perfect for a family meal with parents,

Bakgane’s King Danjong’s Royal Table features a clean,

hearty spread starring nutritious eosuri wild herbs

prepared with the ultimate care.

It was actually crowned the #1 spot in the

Yeongwol episode of the popular food show Ttoganzip.

Even though we visited just before the episode aired,

it was already so popular that there was a line!

But the food was so incredibly delicious and comforting

that I highly recommend adding it to your itinerary,

especially if you're traveling with parents.

Here is my detailed review of Bakgane in Yeongwol—

covering the location, menu, wait times, and taste!

1. Location of Bakgane in Gangwon-do

I’m a big fan of the show Ttoganzip (hosted by Poongja),

and I was so surprised to see Bakgane—

which we had just visited the week before—

win the top spot for the Yeongwol episode!

Known for its King Danjong Royal Table utilizing fresh eosuri herbs,

this place was already famous long before.

My parents had high expectations, and we were so glad

we got to experience this culinary gem right before

the TV crowd rushed in.

For parking, there's a spacious lot right next to the

public health center across the street, but even that

filled up quickly as lunchtime approached.

After a satisfying meal, we visited Cheongnyeongpo

(the historical exile site of King Danjong), just a 5-minute drive away,

and then hopped over to the Jungang Market just 1 minute away

to continue our Gangwon-do food tour.

It made for the perfect, well-rounded family day trip itinerary.

2. The Menu at Bakgane: A Foodie's Paradise

Walk up the short flight of stairs,

and you'll find the entrance to the restaurant.

We got lucky and walked right in without waiting.

But as soon as we sat down, a wave of tourists

arrived for lunch, and a long queue

quickly formed outside.

The line stretched all the way down the stairs.

We ordered and paid upfront at the entrance before being shown to our seats.

The interior featured warm, cozy wood tones throughout.

With its relaxed vibe, it felt like the perfect place to bring your parents.

The seating was comfy, the tables were spaced generously apart,

and there were even private dining rooms, making us feel truly pampered.

The signature King Tanjong's Royal Table requires a minimum order of one set per person.

It’s a beautifully curated feast centered around aromatic Eosuri (heracleum) herb stone-pot rice,

and you can choose the specific set menu you'd like to order.

They also offer a Children's Royal Feast (~$10),

which comes with beef bulgogi and a bowl of white rice.

We ordered four portions of the budget-friendly Royal Feast B Set,

along with some local Yeongwol Donggang Makgeolli.

The makgeolli was incredibly clean, crisp, and refreshing—absolute perfection!

Keep in mind that since they freshly cook the stone-pot rice after you order,

there's about a 20-minute wait time.

Its popularity is no joke, having been featured on major Korean food shows

like 6 O'Clock My Hometown, Live Morning Today,

Korean Dining Table, and Huh Young-man's Food Travel.

I noticed some tables set up for solo diners on one side.

When I asked, they confirmed they do serve solo feast tables.

I was genuinely amazed and left wondering how they make any profit at these prices!

In fact, on the popular show "Too Gan Jip," the host Poongja

enjoyed the ~$12 Royal Feast B Set all by herself.

3. A Feast Worthy of Kings: The Generous Spread and Flavors

A clean, beautiful table of traditional Gangwon-do local cuisine was generously laid out before us.

There were so many side dishes that we were busy devouring the appetizers and initial plates as they arrived.

Since plates were being cleared and our favorite sides replenished throughout the meal,

it was almost impossible to capture a single photo of the entire spread intact!

They mentioned there are 11 side dishes alone.

While waiting for the main course to be served...

We started by tasting the Eosuri Injeolmi (rice cake).

It wasn't overly sweet, and the chewy texture was absolute perfection!

You could catch a subtle, refreshing hint of the Eosuri herb's unique aroma,

which made it so delicious my eyes practically popped open.

With Eosuri herb savory pancakes, Gondre (thistle) jabchae, spicy stir-fried pork,

pickled chili peppers, various seasoned herbs, kimchi,

and stir-fried mushrooms, you could easily polish off two bowls of rice

just with the side dishes alone!

Then came the freshly cooked, steaming-hot

Eosuri stone-pot rice and a savory Makjang stew.

Eosuri rice is made with Eosuri, a wild mountain herb in the parsley family.

It had a lovely, subtle green hue and an incredible aroma.

Mixing it with a spoonful of seasoned soy sauce was pure heaven!

And since it's served in a hot stone pot,

you can pour hot water in at the end to make a cozy Sungnyung (scorched rice tea) for dessert.

On top of that, the rustic makjang (aged soybean paste) stew

tasted incredibly clean and perfectly savory—just like a home-cooked countryside meal.

It paired absolutely beautifully with the fragrant eosuri rice.

The grilled deodeok (root vegetable) wasn't overly salty

or aggressively seasoned; it had just the right touch of sweetness with a gentle spicy kick,

and the natural texture of the root was perfectly preserved with every bite.

Honestly, I felt so guilty for initially wondering,

"Is this just another tourist trap that got popular overnight because of a movie?"

The food quality was outstanding, the value was incredible, and it turned out to

be an absolute gem of a local restaurant on our Korean foodie journey.

If your travels bring you to Yeongwol in Gangwon Province,

you absolutely must try this fragrant, tender eosuri herb.

Especially if you’re planning a family trip to treat your parents—just like I did—

they are guaranteed to fall in love with these wholesome, delicious flavors.

4. Wrapping Up Our Gangwon Province Foodie Adventure

With the lingering emotions from the movie The Man Who Lives with the King still in our hearts,

three generations of our family—my parents, my child, and myself—

embarked on this Yeongwol trip and discovered a legendary meal we'll never forget.

With the lovingly prepared eosuri spread and beautifully clean side dishes,

it’s easy to see why this spot won 1st place on the popular dining show Tto Gan Jip.

It was a culinary destination that truly lived up to the hype!

If you’re planning your own Yeongwol getaway, this makes the perfect family day out

when paired with visits to nearby Cheongnyeongpo Cape and the Jungang Market.

A quick tip, though: Yeongwol is incredibly popular right now!

Try to visit slightly outside of peak dining hours

to dodge the longest lines.
