2. Gwanpungheon (觀風軒): Where a Young King Took His Last Breath

After a major flood at Cheongnyeongpo, King Danjong was moved to this guesthouse in Yeongwol, known as Gwanpungheon.

This is a truly heartbreaking site: on 10/24/1457, King Danjong received the death penalty here, passing away at the tender age of 17.

Adjacent to Gwanpungheon is Jagyuru Pavilion, where King Danjong is said to have recited a poignant poem. In the fall, the ginkgo trees here burst into vibrant color, creating a truly beautiful scene.

3. Jangneung Royal Tomb (莊陵): The Only Joseon Royal Tomb Outside the Capital

Bodeoksa Temple played a crucial role in safeguarding Jangneung Royal Tomb and preparing ritual items for its ceremonies.

This historic temple is said to have been founded in 668 AD by the revered monk Uisang Daesa during the Unified Silla period.

Inside, you'll find precious cultural artifacts, including the Amitabha Triad Buddha statue in the Geuknakbojeon Hall, which showcases the pinnacle of late Joseon Buddhist sculpture, as well as the Triad Buddha and Arhat statues in the Saseongjeon Hall. If you're interested in history and Buddhist culture, this is a must-visit.

5. Seondol Rock: A Scenic Masterpiece Like an Oriental Painting

Our final stop is Seondol Rock, one of Yeongwol's hidden gems.

This incredible natural wonder features two towering, pillar-shaped rock formations, approximately 230 feet (70 meters) high.

It's also known as Seonsunam, or "Immortal Rock," as legend has it that immortals once played here. The sight of these majestic rocks contrasting with the winding Seogang River is truly spectacular.

Have you seen the movie <King and the Clown>? The scene depicting Cheongnyeongpo in the film was actually a set built along the riverbank directly below Seondol Rock! It's a wonderful experience to admire the view while recalling the movie.
