Yeongwol Travel 2026: Tracing King Danjong's Legacy in Gangwon Province

Ready for an unforgettable journey? Today, we're heading to Yeongwol in Korea's stunning Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province.

Yeongwol isn't just famous for its breathtaking natural landscapes; it's also a place where the poignant history of Joseon's 6th king, Danjong, comes vividly to life.

I recently stumbled upon Yeongwol's official tourist guide, titled <Yeongwol, Where the King Lives>, and was impressed by how beautifully it organized all of King Danjong's historical sites and other attractions.

Following its charming motto, "Just follow the map!" I'm excited to share a captivating itinerary that takes you through five of Yeongwol's most significant spots, blending history with stunning scenery.

1. Cheongnyeongpo (淸冷浦): An Island on Land

Our first stop is Cheongnyeongpo, the poignant site of King Danjong's exile.

This unique location is surrounded on three sides by deep rivers, while to the west, the formidable cliffs of Yukyukbong rise majestically. It's essentially an island, impossible to leave without a boat.

Despite its sorrowful history, the scenery of the lush pine forest here is absolutely stunning. Be sure to explore Danjong's Royal Residence, a recreation of his living quarters, and the Gwaneumsong Pine Tree, a Natural Monument (No. 349) that's over 600 years old.

If the main parking lot is crowded, consider using the nearby Yeongwol Tourist Center or Dongseogang Garden Cheongnyeongpo Garden parking lots for convenience.

2. Gwanpungheon (觀風軒): Where a Young King Took His Last Breath

After a major flood at Cheongnyeongpo, King Danjong was moved to this guesthouse in Yeongwol, known as Gwanpungheon.

This is a truly heartbreaking site: on 10/24/1457, King Danjong received the death penalty here, passing away at the tender age of 17.

Adjacent to Gwanpungheon is Jagyuru Pavilion, where King Danjong is said to have recited a poignant poem. In the fall, the ginkgo trees here burst into vibrant color, creating a truly beautiful scene.

3. Jangneung Royal Tomb (莊陵): The Only Joseon Royal Tomb Outside the Capital

This is the only Joseon royal tomb not located within the Seoul metropolitan area.

Beyond King Danjong's tomb on the hilltop, you can explore the Danjong History Museum, which chronicles his life, and Jangpanok Shrine, dedicated to 268 loyal subjects. The well-maintained pine forest walking path makes this a wonderful place for quiet contemplation.

4. Bodeoksa Temple (報德寺): Jangneung's Guardian Temple

Bodeoksa Temple played a crucial role in safeguarding Jangneung Royal Tomb and preparing ritual items for its ceremonies.

This historic temple is said to have been founded in 668 AD by the revered monk Uisang Daesa during the Unified Silla period.

Inside, you'll find precious cultural artifacts, including the Amitabha Triad Buddha statue in the Geuknakbojeon Hall, which showcases the pinnacle of late Joseon Buddhist sculpture, as well as the Triad Buddha and Arhat statues in the Saseongjeon Hall. If you're interested in history and Buddhist culture, this is a must-visit.

5. Seondol Rock: A Scenic Masterpiece Like an Oriental Painting

Our final stop is Seondol Rock, one of Yeongwol's hidden gems.

This incredible natural wonder features two towering, pillar-shaped rock formations, approximately 230 feet (70 meters) high.

It's also known as Seonsunam, or "Immortal Rock," as legend has it that immortals once played here. The sight of these majestic rocks contrasting with the winding Seogang River is truly spectacular.

Have you seen the movie <King and the Clown>? The scene depicting Cheongnyeongpo in the film was actually a set built along the riverbank directly below Seondol Rock! It's a wonderful experience to admire the view while recalling the movie.
