With the summer vacation season in full swing, I bet so many of you hardworking office folks are searching for the perfect snorkeling spot to dive into the cool, refreshing ocean.
Just as famous as Samcheok or Uljin, a new hotspot has been buzzing among snorkelers lately: the **Daetan Breakwater** in Yeongdeok, Gyeongbuk!
Since it's renowned as a snorkeling mecca, the place was packed with eager travelers making the most of their weekend.
But wait! If you just pack your rash guard and head over blindly based on the rumors, you might find yourself caught off guard. There are some real, raw on-site conditions and unexpected facts you need to know.
Today, I'm sharing my honest, firsthand experience from my trip to Yeongdeok's Daetan Breakwater this summer. I'll cover everything from the actual water visibility and temperature to essential tips on where to shower and rent gear. Here is your ultimate, quick-read guide!

💡 Genie's Quick Summary
Daetan Breakwater in Yeongdeok is incredibly popular for snorkeling, so expect quite a crowd.
However, when I visited, there was a major plot twist: despite it being mid-summer, the water was ice-cold! Plus, the visibility was much cloudier than expected, and I only spotted exactly three fish the entire time.
Before you go, make sure to check the water temperature and weather conditions for that day, and I highly recommend smart-utilizing the nearby guesthouse (minbak) facilities!

1. Crowd & Vibe at the Snorkeling Mecca: Yeongdeok Daetan Breakwater

Yeongdeok's Buzzworthy Hotspot
Since Daetan Breakwater always pops up as a top recommendation when searching for East Coast snorkeling, it was already bustling with water lovers, creating a super lively and energetic vibe.
A Relatively Safe Breakwater Environment
Since the breakwater blocks the rough waves of the open East Sea to some extent, the structure makes it much calmer and easier to enjoy swimming compared to open beaches.
Mostly Families and Couples
You'll see plenty of office-worker couples and families who have set up tents and picnic mats, ready for some snorkeling. It really gives you those vibrant, classic weekend getaway vibes!

There is also a parking lot near the beach area
2. Honest Review: Mid-Summer Water Temp & Cloudy Visibility

Bone-Chilling Water Temperature (Colder than Expected!)
Since it was the peak of July summer, I naturally expected warm, inviting water, but...
Since it wasn't a scorching hot day, the water inside the breakwater and near the beach was bone-chillingly cold—enough to give my whole body a thrilling jolt!
I think the air temperature needs to be at least 35°C (95°F) for the water to feel warm.

Murky Visibility and the Plot Twist of Only 3 Fish
I had high expectations for crystal-clear waters since this place is known as a snorkeling holy grail,
but unfortunately, on the day I visited, the visibility was quite murky and cloudy. Sadly, I only spotted exactly three fish!
Checking the Weather and Currents is a Must
Snorkeling on the East Coast of Korea can be hit-or-miss depending on the wind, currents, and cold-water surges of the day.
Since the visibility can swing between extreme extremes, rather than raising your expectations too high,
it's much better for your peace of mind to just go with the flow and enjoy a casual splash in the water.
3. Tips for Using Meronggol Minbak’s Amenities, Renting Life Jackets, and Showering

The Ultimate Stop for Water Play: Meronggol Minbak
Located right near Daetan Breakwater, 'Meronggol Minbak' (a local guesthouse) is the perfect spot to solve
the biggest challenges of wild snorkeling: showers and gear rentals!

Life Jacket Rentals for Your Safety
The water in the East Sea can be quite chilly, which can easily stiffen your muscles, making safety gear an absolute must.
You can easily rent life jackets and other essentials here, so there's no pressure even if you show up empty-handed.
Wrapping Up with a Cozy Hot Shower
After shivering in the freezing cold sea water,
being able to take a nice, warm shower and change at the guesthouse
was like finding an oasis in the desert for weary travelers.
At first, I planned to rent all my gear on-site. But once I arrived, I realized the rental options, hygiene standards, and prices varied wildly.
If you are visiting with kids or family, or if you plan on snorkeling every year,
instead of paying steep rental fees on-site, it is much more cost-effective and reassuring in the long run
to compare and purchase budget-friendly personal gear in advance.
Before you head out, do a quick price check on the latest trending snorkeling gear!

I've been using this one, and it's actually pretty great!
It even comes with a handy carrying case for the mask!

Even in midsummer, such as July, the water is freezing cold unless the air temperature is over 35 degrees Celsius. In addition, depending on the day's currents and low water temperature phenomena, the visibility can be murky and cloudy, so there is a chance you might see fewer fish.
You can use Meronggol Minbak (Guesthouse), which is located right near Daetan Breakwater. After playing in the cold seawater, you can take a comfortable warm shower here.
Yes, you can rent necessary safety equipment, such as life jackets, at Meronggol Minbak. However, since the hygiene conditions and prices of on-site rentals can vary greatly, it is also a good idea to prepare your own personal equipment in advance.
It is because the breakwater blocks the rough offshore waves of the East Sea to some extent. Thanks to this, you can safely enjoy playing in the water in a relatively calmer environment than at regular unmanaged beaches.
