Planning a trip to Yantai, China? From budget-friendly beach views to wine tastings, here is your perfect 4-day winter itinerary and local travel tips.

Looking for an unexpected, budget-friendly coastal getaway? My winter trip to Yantai, China was a last-minute decision that turned out to be an absolute dream!
Yantai is a beautifully clean, laid-back port city where the main attractions are relatively close to each other. It’s the perfect destination for slow, relaxed exploration.

To help you plan your own adventure, here is a comprehensive guide covering flights, accommodations, weather, public transit, and a perfect 4-day itinerary.
Booking Your Flights

Yantai is incredibly accessible from major East Asian transit hubs, offering surprisingly reasonable airfares year-round.
During the off-season, you can easily find round-trip tickets starting as low as ~$64!

While locals flock here in the summer for beach activities, winter is the quiet off-season. This means you can enjoy the stunning coastal views and European-style architecture without the crowds, all at a fraction of the cost.
I flew with China Eastern Airlines for this trip. You can read my full MU550 flight review in the post below!

Where to Stay in Yantai

Hotel prices in Yantai are exceptionally friendly on the wallet. I stayed at the Brigh Radiance Hotel Yantai, which offered stunning ocean views and incredible value.

Another highly recommended option for international travelers is the Pullman Yantai Center Hotel.
My friends who stayed there absolutely loved it. Plus, it is incredibly convenient—located right near Wanda Mall and the historic Xiaoqingli area, making sightseeing a breeze.

Getting Ready: Mobile Payments & Connectivity

China is almost entirely cashless. From high-end restaurants to street food stalls and public buses, everything runs on mobile payments:
✅️ Alipay and WeChat Pay
Some merchants may not even have change for physical cash, so it is crucial to set up your mobile payment apps and link your international credit card before you depart!

Many regional mobile wallets now offer direct integration with Alipay, making payments seamless for international tourists. Usually, QR code payments work in one of two ways:
1. You present your payment QR code, and the merchant scans it.
2. You scan the merchant's QR code and manually enter the payment amount.
Note: If you link a foreign Visa or Mastercard, transactions over 200 RMB (around ~$28) will incur a 3% international card fee. To avoid this, try to make smaller transactions or look into fee-free international travel cards.

✅️ To ensure your payment apps work smoothly on the go, a reliable internet connection is a must-have.
I highly recommend getting an eSIM or SIM card before you arrive!

I used Usimsa's eSIM throughout my trip, and the connection was fast, stable, and incredibly convenient to set up. Grab yours at a discount before you fly! 🫡

Yantai Winter Weather (January - February)
Winter in Yantai is cold, with average temperatures hovering between 25°F and 40°F.

Because it is a coastal city, the ocean winds can feel incredibly biting. If you plan to walk along the coast, heavy winter coats, gloves, thick scarves, and earmuffs are absolutely essential!

I made the mistake of going unprepared and had to duck into a shopping mall immediately to buy a scarf. Don't repeat my mistake!
When temperatures drop below freezing, avoid walking long distances. Both public buses and Didi (China's ride-hailing app) are incredibly cheap and convenient.

During my stay, we had a romantic snowfall that turned the city into a winter wonderland. It was beautiful, though the snow did get a bit intense at times!
How to Ride the Yantai City Bus

Public transport in China is very affordable, but Yantai takes it to another level. Most city bus rides cost just 1 RMB (about ~$0.15)!

Stay tuned for my next post, where I'll share a curated list of the absolute best local restaurants in Yantai! 🫡
In Yantai, using mobile payment apps like Alipay or WeChat Pay is essential. You can register your Visa or Mastercard on these apps, but please note that a transaction fee applies for payments of 200 yuan or more at a time. Therefore, it is recommended to prepare a card like the Travelog debit card.
In January and February, the average temperature in Yantai is slightly higher than in South Korea, but the wind blows very strongly near the coast. Therefore, it is highly recommended to bring winter accessories such as gloves, scarves, and earmuffs to keep warm.
It takes about an hour by taxi from Yantai Airport to a hotel in the city center. For getting around within downtown Yantai, it is convenient to use Didi taxis or take the city bus, which is cheap with a fare of just 1 yuan.
We recommend the Pullman Yantai Center Hotel, which is popular among Korean travelers. It is located close to major tourist attractions such as Wanda Plaza and Suochengli, making it very easy to get around during your itinerary.
