1. Bangyeri Ginkgo Tree: Real-Time Fall Foliage Status
Here's what the Bangyeri Ginkgo Tree looked like when I visited on Wednesday, 11/04/2026.
While there's still a hint of green, the tree has largely transformed into a beautiful golden hue.

Few leaves have fallen to the ground, and the branches are still lush and vibrant, holding their golden splendor.
If you visit this week (early November 2026), you can still experience the full grandeur of this 1,300-year-old tree.
▶This Week (early Nov) | Enjoy the abundant golden ginkgo leaves |
▶Next Week (mid-Nov) | Witness a spectacular golden carpet of fallen leaves |
Do you know what I consider the absolute best feature of the Wonju Bangyeri Ginkgo Tree?
There's absolutely none of that strong, distinct ginkgo smell!

Personally, even if a ginkgo forest is stunning, I can't enjoy it for long if the smell is too strong.
At Bangyeri (반계리), you can comfortably enjoy the autumn scenery without any unpleasant odors. Score!
2. Photo Tips: How to Get Amazing Shots Even with Crowds
With the fall foliage at its peak right now, crowds flock here regardless of whether it's a weekday or weekend.

There's a safety line around the tree, so rather than queuing for specific photo zones, visitors tend to casually take photos by circling around the fence.

Since you're often shooting from a distance, it can be tricky to avoid getting other people in your frame. Here are two quick tips for real-time shooting to help you capture those perfect shots:
① Use 2-3x Zoom (Telephoto Magnification)
Have the person taking your photo stand a bit further away from you and try shooting with a 2x or 3x zoom (or even higher).

This narrows the frame, naturally excluding surrounding people, while bringing the ginkgo tree closer, resulting in a much more polished and impactful shot.

(If you want a perfectly people-free shot, your only option is an early morning 'open run' right as dawn breaks!)
② Recommended Outfit Color
While white or ivory are fine, I personally highly recommend wearing red! Just look at the photos below – you can clearly see how much red clothing pops!

The strong contrast against the yellow background makes the subject stand out, resulting in brighter and clearer photos.
3. Why Parking Was a Nightmare Even on a Weekday
I visited around 3:30 PM on a Wednesday. Honestly, I thought, 'It's a weekday, it should be fine, right?' But when it comes to a ginkgo tree hotspot, that logic simply doesn't apply.
📍 Wonju Bangyeri Ginkgo Tree Parking Lot
Munmak-eup, Wonju-si, Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province (강원특별자치도 원주시 문막읍)
While the main parking lot and temporary parking areas are quite spacious and well-equipped, the number of visitors far exceeds the capacity, making parking incredibly challenging.
When I arrived, the parking lots were already full, and the queue for parking stretched quite long.

Even roadside parking was completely full, which was surprising!
Instead of waiting to enter the temporary parking lot, if you spot an open space for roadside parking, I highly recommend grabbing it immediately and walking.

It will be much, much faster.

Overall Review & Why You Should Visit
The Wonju Bangyeri Ginkgo Tree (원주 반계리 은행나무) is an essential autumn destination, offering a magnificent 1,300-year-old golden spectacle without any unpleasant smells, ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable experience.

There are also plenty of food stalls nearby, perfect for grabbing a bite after your visit. You'll also find separate restrooms for men and women at the entrance to the ginkgo tree path, so keep their location in mind.

While parking can be a bit chaotic, by using the roadside parking tip and telephoto photography techniques, you can capture incredible, once-in-a-lifetime photos that make the effort entirely worthwhile. Don't miss this stunning spot before fall ends!
