Located on the southern tip of Vancouver Island, Victoria is renowned for its stunning coastal landscapes, European charm, and rich marine life.

Needless to say, my expectations were sky-high before boarding.
Getting There & Checking In
I traveled from downtown Vancouver to Victoria via a scenic seaplane. It's an incredible ride, and the moment you step off the plane at the Inner Harbour, you'll spot several whale watching tour booths right along the docks.
While you can book a tour on-site, I highly recommend booking online in advance to secure your preferred time slot, especially during peak season.
Having a pre-booked ticket made the check-in process incredibly fast and stress-free.
Pre-Departure Prep
Before heading to the boat, you'll get a brief safety orientation at the office. They also sell souvenirs, water, and light snacks inside.
The booking confirmation advised bringing your own drinks, but if you forget, you can buy them at the office.
Just keep in mind that prices at the dock are slightly higher than at a local grocery store, so it's best to stock up beforehand!
Suiting Up for the Salish Sea
Before boarding, the crew hands out heavy, insulated safety suits. They look incredibly bulky, but trust me—you will need them.
Even on a warm summer day, the wind over the open ocean is fierce, and temperatures can drop by 15°F to 20°F out on the water.
Here is my recommended dress code for the tour:
✔ Dress in thin, warm layers
✔ Wear a windbreaker or a light jacket
✔ Wear comfortable, closed-toe sneakers
Pro-tip: Avoid wearing a thick down parka. I made the mistake of wearing a heavy puffer jacket under the survival suit, and I felt like a stuffed, immobile marshmallow. Layering is definitely the way to go!
The 3-Hour Quest for Orcas
Once the boat leaves the harbor, the search begins! What makes these tours fascinating is that there is no fixed route.
The captain decides where to sail based on real-time weather conditions and recent wildlife sightings reported by other vessels.
Every tour is a unique, unscripted experience.
The tour is fully narrated by a knowledgeable marine naturalist. They share fascinating facts about the local ecosystem, making the trip both educational and thrilling.
Even if you're just there for the views, the captain keeps everyone updated on coordinates so you'll always know where to point your camera.
Will You Actually See Whales?
This is the big question. Since these are wild animals in their natural habitat, sightings are never 100% guaranteed.
While orca sightings are highly common, there are days when they prove elusive.
If whales aren't spotted right away, the crew will navigate to alternative rocky outposts to observe harbor seals, sea lions, and bald eagles.
Fortunately, luck was on our side! We spotted a pod of orcas swimming gracefully through the deep blue waters.
Seeing that iconic black dorsal fin slice through the surface of the Pacific was an absolute thrill and easily the highlight of my trip.
It's a humbling experience to witness these apex predators thriving in their natural home.

The tour takes about 3 hours, and there are no stops or restrooms available on the water. Therefore, you must use the restroom before boarding the boat.
The tour company provides thick emergency survival suits, so wearing a thick padded jacket might make you feel too tight and uncomfortable inside the suit. Instead, we recommend wearing multiple thin layers and putting on a windbreaker or a light jacket.
Due to the nature of wildlife tracking programs, a 100% whale sighting guarantee is not possible. If no whales are found, the tour will move to spots heavily populated by seals or sea lions to observe other wildlife.
You can find the whale tour company booths right near the dock as soon as you get off the seaplane. On-site booking is possible, but it is recommended to book online in advance in case your preferred time slot is sold out.
