On a previous trip to Italy, I couldn't get in because I hadn't made a reservation in advance for
St. Mark's Basilica!
It's located in Venice's most beautiful St. Mark's Square,
and is popular for its opulent golden architectural style.
Today, I'm sharing my review of St. Mark's Basilica,
a recommended stop from my recent return trip to Venice.
I purchased my ticket from the official website and made a reservation,
`then simply showed my QR code to enter.
The golden altarpiece behind the main altar, Pala d'Oro,
requires a separate ticket, I discovered!
I hadn't researched the interior beforehand,
and was simply captivated by the beautiful exterior when I booked my ticket.
With its Byzantine architecture and numerous points of interest,
I'll also share some helpful tips for your visit!

What is St. Mark's Basilica?
St. Mark's Basilica is a cathedral built to honor
Saint Mark, the patron saint of Venice.
It's a masterpiece of Byzantine architecture dating back to the 11th century,
with approximately 8,000㎡ of golden mosaics adorning its interior.
Isn't the sheer scale absolutely breathtaking!?
Located in the truly beautiful St. Mark's Square,
its magnificent palace-like exterior is almost beyond words.
When I first visited, I was utterly captivated by its beauty, like a singular work of art.
If you're visiting Venice for the first time,
it's almost always recommended as an essential stop along with St. Mark's Square.
My Review of the Interior and Important Notes
I only reserved the basic admission ticket from the official website,
and entered after showing my QR code.
The wait wasn't long as I had a reserved time slot,
and entry was quite smooth.

What I felt as I stepped inside the cathedral was
that the atmosphere was truly extraordinary from the moment I entered.
Wow... I've visited many cathedrals in Italy myself,
but I was still completely mesmerized by its overwhelming grandeur!
Right from the moment they entered, like me,
I often heard exclamations of awe from other international travelers around me.
It made me wonder endlessly how people in that era
could have achieved such incredible architecture.
Even more than I expected, the ceiling mosaics
were so dazzling that I found myself gazing up for a long time.
However, as I explored the interior, one thing that was a bit disappointing was that people kept going behind the altar.
This area is for the Golden Altarpiece, the 'Pala d'Oro,'
and you need a separate ticket to enter.
Even that couple on the right, just like me, asked the staff and couldn't go in, which was a bit of a bummer. Haha.
Feeling a bit disappointed, I zoomed in and took a photo from afar.
The Pala d'Oro is a prime example of Byzantine art.
Adorned with approximately 1,900 jewels and intricate goldwork,
it's one of St. Mark's Basilica's most iconic treasures.
There were so many other interesting points to see,
which made me wish I'd opted for a guided tour, just like I did at the Vatican.
While there were some explanations along the way,
it would've definitely been even better with a deeper understanding of its history!
This spot was also incredibly beautiful,
and it felt like people were offering their wishes and prayers here.
As you wander around, you'll find there's so much more to see than you might expect,
it kept sparking my curiosity at every turn.
Even squeezing in a visit amidst a busy schedule felt totally worth it –
it's truly an amazing place!
If You're Short on Time, an Online Korean Guide is Recommended
After exploring it myself, I realized St. Mark's Basilica is
too grand to simply snap a few photos and leave.
If you dive into the history of the Venetian Republic,
it transforms into a much more fascinating place to explore.
Even after visiting Venice three times, there's still so much to see,
and especially for St. Mark's Basilica,
I regretted not preparing with a Korean guide beforehand.

The interior of St. Mark's Basilica is adorned with golden mosaics covering an area of approximately 8,000 square meters. I mentioned that the splendor of the ceiling mosaics was so captivating that I found myself gazing upwards for a long time.
If time is limited, using an online Korean guide is recommended. I mentioned that knowing the history of the Venetian Republic makes the visit much more interesting, and expressed regret for not having prepared a Korean guide.
