Value Mart Hitakatsu Review 2026: Essential Shopping in Tsushima

If you're staying in Hitakatsu, Tsushima, there's one spot you'll almost certainly find yourself visiting: Value Mart Hitakatsu.

With no other convenience stores or major supermarkets in the heart of Hitakatsu, it's essentially your go-to for grabbing water, drinks, or late-night snacks for your accommodation.

While its location, just a short walk from the ferry terminal, makes it incredibly accessible, keep in mind that the store isn't huge, and popular items tend to fly off the shelves quickly, especially at peak times.

I popped in twice, once in the morning and again in the evening, and I'll share all the details on bento and sushi stock, alcohol and other food items, plus important info on payment and tax-free options.

Value Mart Hitakatsu is conveniently located just a 10-minute walk from the Hitakatsu International Ferry Terminal.

Compared to the larger Value Mart in Oura, this branch doesn't offer tax-free shopping, and both its store size and product selection are more limited.

However, its close proximity to the terminal and walkability make it a popular stop for day-trippers and those without rental cars.

Near the entrance, you'll find a display of fresh fruits.

Just a friendly reminder: many countries have strict regulations against bringing fresh produce back home, so if you're craving some delicious Japanese fruit, enjoy it while you're here in Tsushima!

Bento & Sushi Corner

One of the first sections to check at Value Mart is the bento and sushi corner.

On both my morning and evening visits, I noticed the shelves for bentos and sushi were quite bare.

It seems travelers eager to avoid lunch queues or those struggling to find dinner spots often clear them out quickly! The seafood section was similarly depleted.

Alcohol

While there were some empty spots in the beer aisle, you could still find a good selection of standard Japanese beers.

I was particularly excited to spot Master's Dream, a beer I don't often encounter on my travels across Japan, so it was a pleasant surprise to find it in this smaller Tsushima supermarket.

Curry & Sauces

You'll find a diverse selection of curry and sauces, from familiar brands like Bon Curry, Vermont Curry, and Golden Curry, to collaborations with famous restaurants and even premium options.

Budget-friendly varieties start around ~$1, with most ranging from ~$1-$3, making them great souvenirs to bring back home.

The furikake (rice seasoning) section was also quite picked over, but thankfully, the popular Noritama brand was still available.

The shelves here are typically stocked with items highly sought after by international visitors, including Kikkoman Hon Tsuyu, Yamaki Kappo Shirodashi, Otafuku Okonomi Sauce, Hondashi, and fresh wasabi.

Snacks & Jellies

In the chocolate aisle, you'll spot familiar favorites like DARS, Ghana, and Takenoko no Sato, though nearly half the shelves were empty.

Staff were restocking in the morning, so visiting earlier seems to be the best strategy.

The selection of other snacks and jellies wasn't extensive, but you'll find enough to grab a treat.

Cup Noodles

The cup noodle section featured popular choices like Nissin Cup Noodle, Donbei, and UFO.

While it doesn't boast the massive variety of a larger supermarket, you'll still find all the well-known brands.

As for detergents and other household essentials, these shelves seemed much better stocked compared to the food sections.

Payment & Tax-Free Status

It's crucial to remember that Value Mart Hitakatsu accepts card payments but does NOT offer tax-free shopping! Also, you won't find any pharmaceuticals or cosmetics here.

In summary, Value Mart Hitakatsu offers excellent accessibility, being just a short walk from the center of Hitakatsu. However, if your main goal is extensive shopping, you might find this branch a bit underwhelming.
