Hello, fellow travelers! During my recent 5-day exploration of Kyoto, I found what might be the absolute best-value ryokan-style hotel in the city.
If you have ever wanted to experience a traditional Japanese hot spring bath privately without breaking the bank, this is the place! I loved it so much that I extended my stay on the spot to spend two full nights here.
Since I spent two wonderful nights here, I will share a detailed review covering the rooms, private baths, and all the fantastic free amenities.

01. Hotel Overview
🏩 Kyoto Ume-koji Kadensho

🏩 A Modern Ryokan Experience
Ume-koji Kadensho is operated by Kyoritsu Resort, the same group behind Japan’s famous Dormy Inn hotels. This means the service, cleanliness, and booking systems are top-notch.
The exterior immediately gives off classic ryokan vibes. It is much larger than I expected, and because it opened recently in 2022, everything feels fresh, clean, and incredibly welcoming.

Blending Western comfort with traditional Japanese design, Kadensho has two branches in Kyoto: Arashiyama and Ume-koji. The Ume-koji location was built in 2022, making it exceptionally modern, clean, and well-maintained.

📍 Location & Access
- 41-10 Sujakuuchihatacho, Shimogyo Ward, Kyoto, 600-8843 Japan
- Less than a 5-minute walk from Umekoji-Kyotonishi Station (JR Line)
It is just one stop away from Kyoto Station (about a 10-minute total transit time), making it super easy to access.

While it is not directly in the bustling center of Kawaramachi, the proximity to the train station made commuting effortless. It is also an excellent option if you are traveling with parents who prefer minimal walking.
One quick tip: Since this is a quieter area rather than a major commercial hub, dining options directly around the hotel are limited. I recommend grabbing dinner near Kyoto Station or downtown before heading back for the night.
📌 Pricing & Value
Traditional ryokans with private hot spring baths can easily cost a fortune. However, Ume-koji Kadensho is incredibly budget-friendly, with rates starting in the low ~$130s per night depending on the season! (I managed to book it for around ~$100/night during the off-season last year).

Agoda | ~$146~ | |
Trip.com | ~$128~ | |
Klook | ~$126~ |

I booked my first night on Trip.com just three days before the trip, and spontaneously added the second night on the day of arrival.
September (Off-Peak) / Twin Room / 2 Nights / 2 People / Total ~$243
Note: Peak seasons in Kyoto are during the cherry blossom (spring) and autumn foliage seasons. Also, Kyoto charges a local accommodation tax and bath tax. Expect to pay an additional 700 JPY (~$5) per night for two people directly at the hotel.

📌 Check-In & Check-Out
Check-in: From 3:00 PM | Check-out: Until 11:00 AM
The front desk is well-staffed, and they offer convenient luggage storage before check-in and after check-out.

True to ryokan tradition, guests remove their shoes at the entrance. The entire hotel is lined with clean, comfortable tatami mats. It felt incredibly cozy and spotless throughout!
02. Room Review & Guest Experience
Comparing the Quad Room and Standard Twin Room

📍 The 4-Person Quad Room (Fourth)
On our first night, the hotel generously upgraded us to a massive 4-person room!

This room features a separate bedroom with two large beds, a spacious living area, and a fantastic view of the local train tracks (a dream for train spotters!). If you are traveling as a family, I highly recommend booking this room style.

📍 Bathroom & Shower
The toilet and shower areas are completely separate and modern. There is no bathtub in the room, but with the incredible public and private hot spring baths downstairs, you won’t miss it at all!

📍 Standard Twin Room
This was our room for the second night. While smaller than the quad room, it was very cozy and beautifully designed with a modern tatami aesthetic.

📍 Custom Pillow Bar
Each floor features a pillow bar with five different types of pillows. You can choose the perfect firmness for your sleep! They go fast, so grab one right after check-in.

📍 Complimentary Massage Chairs
There are free-to-use massage chairs located on each floor. Amazingly, they were rarely occupied, so I enjoyed relaxing sessions every morning and evening!
03. Amenities & Services
Private Onsen, Public Baths, Soba, and Yukatas

📌 5 Private Onsen Baths (1st Floor)
The crown jewel of this hotel is the collection of five private hot spring baths, available to guests completely free of charge!
Baths #2 and #3 feature 100% natural hot spring water and are highly popular. You can check availability via the light-up display board in the hallway (Light ON = Occupied). If your desired bath is full, simply wait on the benches outside.
Note: The private bath cabins do not have showers. Please wash in the main public bath or your room before soaking.

📌 Private Bath #1 (Silky Bath)
This beautiful ceramic tub features micro-bubble jets that create a soothing, silky bath experience. It easily fits two people comfortably.

📌 Private Bath #2 (Natural Rock Spring ⭐️)
A rustic, open-air style stone bath filled with natural hot spring water. The atmosphere of soaking in a private rock pool with your travel partner is absolutely unmatched!

📌 Private Bath #3 (Hinoki Wood Spring ⭐️)
This tub is made of traditional Japanese wood, offering a wonderfully fragrant and relaxing natural hot spring soak. I visited this one multiple times!

📌 Private Baths #4 & #5
These two baths are similar in design and usually have the shortest wait times. One of them is slightly larger, making it perfect for families of 3 to 4 people to enjoy together.

📌 Main Public Bath (1st Floor)
Hours: 3:00 PM – 10:00 AM (Next Day)
In addition to the private baths, there is a large communal public bath featuring a spacious outdoor bath, indoor natural hot springs, and a dry sauna. It connects smoothly to the private bath area, making it easy to shower before or after your private soak.

📍 Complimentary Yukata Rental
Guests can choose and wear beautiful traditional yukatas during their stay. Colors and sizes are limited, so pick yours right after checking in!

📌 Free Drink Station (1st Floor)
Help yourself to tea, coffee, and soft juices at the lobby beverage station. The sweet matcha latte was incredibly delicious—I must have had five cups during my stay!

📍 Welcome Lounge
Hours: 4:00 PM – 9:00 PM (Dango served: 6:00 PM – 7:00 PM)
Located opposite the public bath entrance, this beautifully designed lounge offers complimentary drinks, alcohol, and sweet dango skewers. It is a lovely space to unwind.

📍 Complimentary Treats & Night Ramen
- Yonaki Soba (Free Ramen): 9:30 PM – 11:00 PM
- Free Ice Cream: 3:00 PM – 12:00 AM
- Free Probiotic Drinks: 6:00 AM – 10:00 AM

The complimentary soy-sauce ramen (Yonaki Soba) was surprisingly delicious! I happily finished a bowl both nights. Grab a free ice cream bar after your hot bath for the perfect late-night treat.

My stay at Ume-koji Kadensho was absolutely wonderful. I visited during the warmer months, but soaking in the hot springs during the crisp autumn or winter would be even more magical! I definitely plan to return with my family during the autumn foliage season. Safe travels and enjoy your time in Kyoto! 👋🏻
Among the 5 private baths on the 1st floor, baths No. 2 and No. 3 use natural hot spring water. These two are the most popular, so we recommend using them right away if they are available.
You just need to travel one stop by train from Kyoto Station and get off at Umekoji-Kyotonishi Station. The hotel is conveniently located within a 5-minute walk from the station.
Yes, the Kyoto accommodation tax and hot spring tax must be paid additionally on-site. In the author's case, a total of 700 JPY was paid for two people per night.
The late-night Yonaki Soba is available every day from 21:30 to 23:00 in the 1st-floor free space. It is perfect for a light meal before or after enjoying the hot spring.
The private baths do not require separate reservations. You can simply check availability by the light at the entrance and enter freely. If the light is on, the bath is already in use, and you will need to wait on the chair in front of the door.
