Specifically, around Shinobazu Pond within Ueno Park, the spectacular Summer Ueno Park Matsuri comes alive.
As a true Japanese festival enjoyed by both locals and tourists, it's packed with various yatai (food stalls), games, performances, and delicious treats, making it a fantastic spot for an evening stroll. If you want to genuinely experience Japanese culture in Tokyo, this is definitely a place worth visiting.

This was my first time visiting a Japanese Matsuri, and I was so impressed by its large scale and wonderful atmosphere.
It felt like a classic lively street fair, but with that unmistakable Japanese charm. The yatai stretched along the pond, and seeing locals dressed in traditional yukata enjoying the festivities truly made me feel like I was experiencing authentic Japan.
The ambiance was perfect for photos, brimming with the unique essence of a Japanese summer, making it a place you'll want to wander through for hours.
🍡 A Taste of the Diverse Yatai Delicacies
The Ueno Park Matsuri boasts an incredible variety of yatai.
You'll find almost every classic Japanese festival food imaginable: yakisoba, takoyaki, okonomiyaki, chicken skewers, and more. Among them, I tried two quintessential festival treats: chocolate-covered bananas and Japanese shaved ice (kakigori).
🍌 Chocolate Banana
Honestly, I had high expectations, but my honest review is that it tasted pretty much like a banana dipped in chocolate. It wasn't particularly unique. It's fine for a one-time experience, but I probably wouldn't buy it again. Also, the chocolate tends to stick to your teeth!
🍑 Kakigori (Japanese Shaved Ice)
Conversely, the kakigori was my favorite! I chose the peach syrup, and with a generous drizzle, the ice absorbed the rich peach flavor, making it incredibly refreshing and delicious. Eating it in the sweltering Tokyo summer made it even more satisfying. Personally, I'd recommend this over the chocolate banana any day.
🏮 More Than Just Food: Other Fun Activities!
As you enter the festival, one of the first things that catches your eye is the antique market. It's surprisingly large, filled with old Japanese trinkets, pottery, decorations, figurines, and a variety of vintage items. It was incredibly fun to browse!
If you love antiques or vintage goods, you could easily spend a long time here. Further inside, right next to the pond, you'll find a spacious area with tables.
This was the perfect spot to enjoy various treats from the yatai. Being able to sit by the pond and soak in the festival atmosphere made this my favorite part of the event.
🔫 Don't Miss the 500 Yen Shooting Game!
If you venture all the way to the back, you'll spot a game booth where a crowd has gathered.
It's a shooting game where you get 5 shots for 500 yen. If you hit the targets, you can win various prizes, including popular Pokémon card packs, which made it surprisingly popular.
I tried it myself, and the difficulty wasn't too high, so it's definitely worth a shot. I managed to hit 3 out of 5 targets! If you visit, I highly recommend giving it a try – you might just walk away with a cool prize!

My visit allowed me to enjoy the festivities alongside locals, savor diverse street foods, browse antiques, and even try my hand at games. It truly became one of the most memorable moments of my Tokyo trip.
Especially if you're traveling to Tokyo in the summer, this is an easy and enjoyable afternoon or evening activity that lets you fully absorb the unique atmosphere of a Japanese summer.

The choco banana is just an ordinary chocolate-coated banana, and the chocolate tends to stick to your teeth a lot, so it is not highly recommended. On the other hand, the kakigori is deeply flavored with peach syrup and is perfect for the hot summer, making it a highly recommended menu item.
For 500 yen, you get to shoot 5 times, and the difficulty level is not very high. If you hit the targets well, you can win various prizes, such as Pokémon card packs.
If you go further inside the festival grounds, there is a spacious table area right next to Shinobazu Pond. Here, you can comfortably enjoy the food you bought from the yatai along with the view of the pond.
