But what if you're like me – craving a spontaneous massage after wandering under the scorching August sun in 2026? Today, I'm sharing my review of a local Ubud massage spot I stumbled into without a reservation, purely on a whim.

True to its local roots, this Bali spa was incredibly affordable. Here’s a breakdown of their Ballinese massage prices:

60 minutes: ~$83

Being a local establishment, the facilities are on the humble side. Don't expect luxurious decor or fancy amenities. However, when it comes to the massage itself, there were absolutely no issues.

Given the prices and the modest facilities – I even saw the therapists relaxing outside – I honestly didn't have high expectations. But perhaps that's why I was so pleasantly surprised! It was genuinely fantastic.

Typically, a traditional Balinese massage (often called Ballinese massage) is characterized by a relatively quick, sweeping rhythm, covering the entire body with a dynamic flow. However, the massage here was incredibly slow and deliberate. I actually wondered if they'd manage to cover my whole body at that pace, but it felt uniquely refreshing and deeply satisfying. It was a sensation of being thoroughly worked on, allowing for truly leisurely relaxation.

Another huge plus: many oil massages in Bali don't include wiping off the oil afterward, leaving you feeling sticky and needing a shower to avoid getting oil on your clothes. Here, they meticulously wiped all the oil off my body.

Even better, right after wiping the oil, they started the head massage (I absolutely love scalp massages!). This meant it was done with oil-free hands, which was perfect. Usually, if a head massage immediately follows an oil massage, your hair ends up greasy and matted. Not here, and I really appreciated that thoughtful detail.

Despite the slow pace, every area was thoroughly addressed. Of the 90-minute Balinese spa treatment, approximately 60 minutes were dedicated to my back, and 30 minutes to my front.

Just a little TMI, but I actually prefer receiving massages while lying on my back rather than face down. Staying in the face cradle for too long can be uncomfortable and sometimes painful.

However, it's common for more time to be allocated to the back, as it's often where most tension resides.

Anyway, after a wonderful massage, I took a quick shower to feel completely refreshed before getting dressed, even though they had already wiped off the oil.
