Discover Bali's Best Walking Paths: Ubud's Campuhan Ridge Walk
As someone who absolutely loves a good stroll, finding a fantastic walking path in a travel destination is always a highlight. There’s something truly special about exploring a new place on foot.
However, famous promenades, like the Philosopher's Walk in Heidelberg, Germany, or Kyoto's Path of Philosophy in Japan, can often be overrun with crowds and noise, diminishing the serene experience you're hoping for.
That's why this particular route in Ubud was such a delightful surprise! It still feels like a bit of a hidden gem, not yet swarmed by tourists. (Perhaps the tropical heat keeps some away, which is just fine by me!)

Campuhan Ridge Walk

Walking a path flanked by lush greenery and towering trees, with the vast sky and drifting clouds above, is simply an unbeatable experience. It's pure bliss.
However...
You absolutely need to pick your time wisely. Aim for early morning before the sun gets too intense, or late afternoon as the sun begins to set.
You *can* walk at other times, but trust me, one walk in the midday heat and you'll understand exactly why I recommend those specific hours!

The scenery is breathtaking, and the walk is wonderful, but with no shade and that classic Southeast Asian climate, walking when the sun is high can be quite challenging.

Luckily, there are charming cafes dotted along the path where you can take a refreshing break when needed.

As you walk, gazing at the sky, clouds, and trees reflected in the rice paddies, a sense of peace and healing washes over you. It's truly rejuvenating.
Oh, and fun fact: this spot has even appeared as a Windows screensaver! Given that only truly exceptional places make it there, it’s clear this walk has earned its recognition. It’s definitely a must-do for any Bali Ubud itinerary.

My Favorite Detour

This is the area I marked on my Bali travel map, right next to Campuhan Ridge Walk, in the purple section. I later found out these paths have names, but I didn't know them at the time, and honestly, the joy was in the discovery, not following a set route.
My Google Timeline would probably show the exact path I took, but I've chosen not to include it here.
I believe that exploring on foot is best done by instinct, not by staring at a phone and tracing someone else's footsteps.
At a fork in the road, following your gut and choosing the path that calls to you often leads to the best experiences.
And what if it's a dead end? That's part of the adventure!
That's how you might stumble upon a flock of ducks, just like I did! It was fascinating to watch them; they were clearly facing forward, yet when the old man behind them gestured for them to move aside, they knew exactly where to go. Amazing!

The paths are exactly as they look: simple trails winding alongside rice fields.

I'm not sure why they're located here, but as you wander, you'll discover many small art studios. I inquired about prices, and they weren't as expensive as I imagined. I considered buying one as a souvenir from my Ubud trip, but decided against it, figuring it would be tricky to transport back home.

You'll even find cool, trendy spots like this one,

and even resorts nestled deep in the jungle, looking like something out of a mystery novel. I was so intrigued that I actually booked a stay there on a subsequent trip!

Along the way, beautiful cafes and yoga studios pop up unexpectedly. The joy of discovering these hidden gems without a plan is truly what makes these paths so enchanting. It's definitely worth adding to your Bali itinerary.
When You Need a Break
Oh, and a heads-up: these paths can be longer than you anticipate. That's another reason why I recommend going around sunset. If you find yourself getting tired, don't hesitate! Immediately pull out your map, head towards a main road, and call a Grab or Gojek.
It can take a surprising amount of walking to reach a spot where bikes or cars can actually pick you up, so don't think
