Dreaming of a camping trip to Tsushima but feeling lost on where to even begin your preparations?
If you're a camper, you've probably thought about trying camping in Tsushima at least once.
Miuda Campground, in particular, is a camper's dream. It's just over an hour by ferry from Busan, and you get to camp right by the emerald-green sea.
But when you actually start planning, it turns out to be trickier than you'd expect.
'Where do I book the campsite?'
'Do I really need a rental car?'
'Where's the best place to stock up on groceries?'
'How can I fit in sightseeing nearby?'
You search and search, but the information is scattered everywhere, and it takes ages to piece everything together.
How do I know?
Because that's exactly what happened on my first Tsushima camping trip!
Unlike camping in Korea, where you can easily book through a reservation website,
it can be quite confusing for first-timers.
I certainly went through a lot of trial and error, searching multiple times and making my own reservations.
So, in this post, based on my own experiences of booking and using the facilities,
I'm going to lay out everything from how to book and use Miuda Campground, to the absolute must-knows for planning your Tsushima camping adventure:

Your Tsushima Camping Adventure Starts with a Rental Car!
Many people think about booking the campsite first, but that's not the way to go.
During peak season, the very first step for camping in Tsushima is reserving a rental car.
Because Tsushima doesn't have much public transportation, and bus intervals are long,
relying on walking or buses is practically impossible.
While Miuda Campground is only about a 5-minute drive from Hitakatsu Port,
it's quite a strenuous distance to cover on foot with all your camping gear.
Plus, to shop for groceries, go sightseeing, and get back to Hitakatsu Port on your last day, a rental car is absolutely essential.
Consider on-site rental during peak season almost impossible.
Here's something incredibly important I want to share with you.
Tsushima doesn't have many rental cars compared to the number of tourists.
Especially during spring and summer holidays or long weekends, it's very common for people to have their travel plans set but still struggle to find a rental car.
I myself once struggled to find a rental car for my late July vacation, even up until a week before my trip!
That's why, if you've booked your ferry tickets, I highly recommend booking your rental car immediately afterwards.

Why I Recommend Miuda Campground as Your Top Choice?
While Tsushima has several campgrounds, for a shorter trip, I highly recommend Miuda Beach.
The biggest reason is that after arriving at Hitakatsu Port,
if you head to a campsite
near Izuhara,
the travel time is quite long. So, if you spend time eating
or visiting a few tourist spots, causing delays,
you might face a situation where the staff have already left for the day,
and you won't be able to check in.
That's why, if you're on a short 1-night, 2-day trip,
Miuda Campsite, with its shorter travel time, is the perfect choice.
What's more, after setting up your tent, you're just a one-minute walk from an emerald-green sea,
And right next to the campsite,
you'll find Nagisa no Yu Onsen,
making it a fantastic spot to wash away your travel fatigue!

cannot be booked through typical camping reservation websites.
Reservations are **available starting one month before your intended use date**,
and the method involves filling out an application form and submitting it via fax.

Nowadays, if you use a **mobile fax app**,
sending it isn't difficult at all,
so it's not as complicated as you might think.
However, competition is incredibly fierce.
For weekends and peak season, bookings can fill up
almost instantly as reservations open.
Once your reservation is complete, you should receive a reply fax.
If you don't receive a reply, it means your application wasn't sent correctly,
so make sure to double-check.

Small Tips to Boost Your Reservation Success Rate
From my own experience making several reservations, I've learned that:
**Checking the reservation start date in advance,**
**preparing the application form beforehand,**
and installing a mobile fax app in advance are all crucial.
Also, it's best to arrive as early as possible
for check-in.
At Miuda Campsite, sites are chosen on a first-come, first-served basis,
so if you arrive late,
the prime spots with ocean views
are often already taken.
Where's the Best Place to Shop for Groceries?
Grocery shopping is incredibly important for a camping trip!
Initially, you might consider using the supermarkets near Hitakatsu Port,
but they are quite small.
That's why I recommend shopping at Value Mart Ohura.
You can find most of what you need there, from meat and vegetables to drinks and snacks.
The downside, however, is that it's the most expensive supermarket in Tsushima,
which is a bit of a bummer.
But on the bright side, you don't have to carry heavy ingredients
all the way from Korea,
making your luggage much lighter.
Speaking of essentials, isobutane gas isn't always easy to find locally.
That's why I personally searched for equipment that could use both isobutane and butane.
Once You've Arrived at the Campsite, Here's How to Make the Most of It
Miuda Campsite offers a variety of options, including free sites, auto camping,
permanent tents, and bungalows.
After checking in, you can choose your preferred spot and set up your tent.
The restrooms and washing stations are conveniently located nearby,
making them easy to use,
and the facilities were well-maintained and clean.
In the evening, we enjoyed a campfire, and to wind down the day, we headed to the adjacent Nagisa no Yu Onsen.
This combination for unwinding
was incredibly satisfying!
Planning Your Tsushima Travel Itinerary This Way Will Be So Much Easier
Here's my recommended Tsushima camping itinerary for your first day:
Arrive at Hitakatsu Port → Pick up your rental car
→ Grocery shopping at Value Mart Oura Branch
→ Check in at Miuda Campground → Set up your tent
→ Stroll along Miuda Beach → Nagisa-no-yu Onsen
→ Evening camping.
On the second day, we visited Ajiro's Ripple Marks and
the Shushi River Autumn Leaves Road.
On the way back, we enjoyed swimming at Mogihama Beach,
stopped by Value Mart for groceries,
and then I recommend heading back to
the campground.
Since you don't have to change accommodations,
there's no need to constantly carry your luggage around,
making the trip much more relaxed and enjoyable.
My Final Thoughts
Miuda Campground isn't simply
a place just for camping; it's a campground that encapsulates
all the charm of Tsushima, allowing you to enjoy
the sea, hot springs, and travel all in one place.
The booking system is different from what we might be used to,
so it might feel a little unfamiliar at first.
However, if you prepare your rental car and campground reservations in advance,
it's actually not as difficult to use as you might think.
Especially, securing your rental car at the same time as booking your ferry ticket,
and then proceeding with the campground reservation,
is the most crucial preparation tip!
