Dreaming of camping on Tsushima Island?

Feeling overwhelmed about where to even begin planning?

If you're a true camper, you've probably dreamt of experiencing camping on Tsushima

at least once.

Miuda Campground, in particular, is a dream destination for many campers.

You can reach it in just over an hour by ferry from Busan,

and imagine camping right by an emerald-green sea –

simply breathtaking!

But when you actually start planning,

it can be more challenging than you'd expect.

'Where do I book a campsite?'

'Is a rental car really necessary?'

'Where's the best place to stock up on groceries?'

'How can I best explore nearby attractions?'

Even with endless searching,

information is scattered everywhere,

and piecing it all together

can take ages.

How do I know?

Because that's exactly what happened to me during my first Tsushima camping trip!

Unlike domestic camping in Korea, where you can easily book through a single reservation site,

it's bound to be confusing

for first-timers.

I went through a lot of trial and error myself, searching multiple times and booking everything directly.

So, in this post, I'll draw upon my own firsthand experience of booking and enjoying Tsushima camping

to guide you through everything from how to book and use Miuda Campground,

to the absolute essentials you need to know if you're planning a Tsushima camping adventure,

including rental car reservations, grocery shopping, and even your travel itinerary –

all in one comprehensive guide!

Tsushima Camping Kicks Off with Your Rental Car Reservation!

Many people start by thinking about campsite reservations,

but that's actually not the ideal approach.

During peak season, the absolute first step for Tsushima camping is

securing your rental car.

That's because Tsushima doesn't have extensive public transportation,

and bus schedules can be infrequent,

making it practically impossible

to get around by foot or public bus.

While Miuda Campground is

only about a 5-minute drive from Hitakatsu Port,

it's quite a stretch to walk with all your camping gear.

Plus, you'll need a rental car for grocery shopping,

exploring attractions, and making your way back to Hitakatsu Port

on your last day.

During Peak Season, On-Site Rentals Are Almost Impossible

Here's a crucial piece of advice I want to share.

Tsushima doesn't have a large fleet of rental cars

compared to the number of visitors it welcomes.

Especially during spring and summer holidays or long weekends,

it's incredibly common for travelers to be unable to find a rental car,

even after their travel dates are set.

I myself once struggled to find a rental car for my late July vacation,

getting stressed out right up until a week before my trip.

That's why I strongly recommend booking your rental car

immediately after you've secured your ferry tickets.

Why Miuda Campground is My Top Recommendation

While Tsushima boasts several fantastic campsites,

for a shorter trip,

I highly recommend Miuda Beach.

The biggest reason is that after arriving at Hitakatsu Port,

if you try to move to a campsite

near Izuhara,

the travel time is long. If you delay by eating a meal

or stopping at a few tourist spots,

it's possible you won't be able to check-in

because the staff will have already left for the day.

So, for a short 1-night, 2-day itinerary,

Miuda Campground is your perfect choice due to its short travel time.

What's more, once you set up your tent, you can reach the emerald sea in just a one-minute walk,

Right next to the campground,

there's also the Nagisanoyu Onsen,

making it truly wonderful for unwinding from your travel fatigue.

How to Book Miuda Campground

Let's find out how to book, which I know many of you are curious about!

cannot be booked through general camping reservation websites.

Reservations are possible starting one month before your intended use date,

and the method is to fill out an application form and send it by fax.

Nowadays, if you use a mobile fax app,

it's not difficult to send,

so it's not as complicated as you might think.

However, the competition is truly fierce.

On weekends or during peak season, applications flood in right when reservations open,

so your desired date might be fully booked instantly.

Once your reservation is complete, you should receive a reply fax,

but if you don't receive a reply, it means it wasn't sent properly,

so you must double-check.

Small Tips to Boost Your Reservation Success Rate

From my own experience making several reservations, I've learned that

it's important to check the reservation start date in advance,

prepare the application form beforehand,

and also install a mobile fax app in advance.

And it's best to arrive for check-in

as early as possible.

Miuda Campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis for site selection,

so if you arrive late,

the good spots with ocean views

are often already taken.

Where's the Best Place for Grocery Shopping?

Grocery shopping is really important for camping!

Initially, you might consider the supermarkets

near Hitakatsu Port, but they are quite small.

That's why I recommend doing your grocery shopping

at Value Mart Ohura.

You can buy most of the essentials you need,

from meat, vegetables, and drinks to snacks.

However, the downside is that it's

the most expensive supermarket on Tsushima, which is a bit of a bummer.

But since you don't have to bring heavy ingredients

from Korea, your luggage will be much lighter.

Iso-gas is not an item that's

easily available locally.

So, I looked for a product that uses both iso-gas and butane gas.

Once You've Arrived at the Campground, Here's How to Make the Most of It!

Miuda Campground offers a variety of options,

including free sites, auto-camping, permanent tents, and bungalows.

After checking in, you can choose your desired spot

and set up your tent.

The restrooms and washing facilities were also conveniently located nearby,

making them easy to use, and the facilities were kept clean and well-maintained.

In the evening, we enjoyed a campfire, and to wrap up the day, we relaxed at Nagisanoyu Onsen right next door,

where we melted away our fatigue. This combination

was incredibly satisfying!

Planning your Tsushima trip itinerary this way makes it so much easier!

Here's my recommended Tsushima camping itinerary for your first day:

Arrive at Hitakatsu Port → Pick up rental car

→ Grocery shopping at Value Mart Oura branch

→ Check-in at Miuda Camping Ground → Set up tent

→ Stroll on Miuda Beach → Nagisanoyu Onsen

→ Evening camping.

On the second day, the Ripple Marks of Ajiro

and the Shushi River Maple Path were on the agenda.

On the way back, we enjoyed some water activities at Mogihama Beach,

stopped by Value Mart for groceries,

and then heading back to the campsite.

I highly recommend this route!

Since you don't have to change accommodations,

there's no need to constantly carry your luggage around,

which made the trip much more relaxed.

Overall Review

Miuda Camping Ground is not

just a place for camping;

it's a campsite where you can enjoy the beach, hot springs, and travel all at once,

embodying all the charms of Tsushima.

The booking method is different from what we have in Korea,

so it might feel a bit unfamiliar at first.

However, if you prepare your rental car and campsite bookings in advance,

it's actually not that difficult to use.

Especially, reserving your ferry ticket and securing your rental car first,

followed by making your campsite reservation,

is the most crucial preparation tip.
