Tsujihan Ark Hills: Tokyo's Must-Try Kaisen-don Spot
Location, Opening Hours, Menu, Waiting Time, Review
Text & Photos by Traveler Mado
One of the dishes I absolutely had to try on my Tokyo trip was Kaisen-don,
a glorious seafood rice bowl generously topped with fresh catches.
While Tsujihan's main Nihonbashi branch is super famous,
I heard the wait could be almost two hours!
So, I opted for the
Ark Hills branch, known for its relatively shorter queues!
When I visited on a Friday lunchtime,
it was mostly local office workers enjoying their break.
I'm excited to share my honest review,
covering everything from the actual waiting time, menu, and prices,
all the way to that incredible sea bream broth you get at the end :)

Tsujihan Ark Hills: Your Guide to Location & Opening Hours for Tokyo's Best Kaisen-don

Tsujihan boasts five branches across Tokyo:
the main Nihonbashi branch, Muromachi, Kagurazaka,
Tokyo Midtown, and Ark Hills.
While the main branch near Tokyo Station is a magnet for tourists,
it's also notorious for its incredibly long queues.
The branch I explored was the
'Tsujihan Ark Hills branch,' nestled perfectly between Roppongi and Akasaka!

Your Guide to Waiting Times & Menu at Tsujihan Ark Hills
Nihonbashi Kaisen-don Tsujihan Ark Hills Branch

We arrived
around noon on a Friday.
Even though this branch is known for shorter waits,
we encountered a slightly longer queue than expected,
likely due to it being peak lunchtime for local office workers.
However, the line moved surprisingly fast,
and we were seated after about 20 minutes!
The restaurant was predominantly filled with
local office workers rather than tourists, and many were dining solo.

The space is primarily counter seating and isn't huge,
but thankfully, the spacing between seats was better than I'd anticipated,
making for a comfortable meal!

Tsujihan's core menu offers four varieties, differing in their seafood composition.
- Ume: ~$8
- Take: ~$12
- Matsu: ~$16
- Tokujo (Special): ~$24
All prices shown include tax :)

My boyfriend and I both ordered the Take Kaisen-don,
and we each added a draft beer.
The total came to ~$37, which included delicious
Yebisu draft beer!
The Take option, building on the basic Ume set,
adds generous crab meat and salmon roe,
offering a fantastic balance of price and seafood variety.
Kaisendon 'Take': My Honest Take!

When you place your order, even before your Kaisendon arrives,
you'll be presented with a small plate of sashimi
and a delightful soy sauce infused with egg yolk.
Now, this sashimi isn't meant to be devoured all at once right away!
Instead, you'll want to save about two pieces to enjoy later with the sea bream broth.
The sashimi itself was incredibly fresh,
and had a wonderfully satisfying chewy texture.
However, I must admit, the seasoning was quite a bit saltier than I had expected! (Oops!)

Just a little while later, the star of the show arrived – our Kaisendon!
The seafood was piled high like a majestic mountain peak,
making it look absolutely irresistible from the first glance.
How to Perfectly Savor Tsujihan's Kaisendon

1. Gently dissolve the wasabi into the egg yolk soy sauce.
2. After gently "collapsing" the seafood mountain, drizzle the soy sauce evenly over everything and dig in!
3. Remember to save two pieces of the sashimi from the side plate for the upcoming sea bream broth.
4. When you've enjoyed about two-thirds of your rice, signal a staff member to request the hot sea bream broth.
5. Add your reserved sashimi into the fragrant broth and savor it as the perfect grand finale!

Following their expert guidance,
I gently broke the egg yolk, dissolved the wasabi into the soy sauce,
and generously drizzled it evenly over my Kaisendon before diving in.
When the vibrant seafood encountered the creamy egg yolk soy sauce,
the flavors merged into an incredibly smooth and savory delight,
and perhaps thanks to that touch of wasabi, it stayed wonderfully light and never felt greasy, even to the very last bite!
With a delightful mix of various finely chopped seafood,
each mouthful offered a subtly different texture – truly a captivating experience!

When I had about one-third of my rice remaining,
I placed my rice bowl on the counter,
and a friendly staff member promptly poured in the warm, inviting sea bream broth.
Into this comforting broth, I gently added the two pieces of sashimi I had cleverly saved,
and savored it just like Ochazuke – a truly delightful way to finish!
Honestly, for me, the grand finale of pouring in that sea bream broth
was even more incredibly delicious than the initial Kaisendon itself! Haha, who would've thought?

The broth boasted an incredible depth of umami flavor,
and if I were to describe its essence through Korean cuisine,
it was remarkably similar to a comforting, savory, and wholesome Hwangtae-guk (dried pollock soup).
This is an absolute must-try – seriously! You won't regret it!
Tsujihan Ark Hills Branch: My Final Verdict

Tsujihan is quite a renowned Kaisendon spot, even garnering significant interest in Korea, so much so that a Dosan branch in Seoul is slated to open at the end of August this year!
But to be completely honest with you,
it wasn't quite the overwhelmingly mind-blowing flavor that would justify waiting two hours at the main branch.
However, the unique experience of enjoying both a delectable seafood rice bowl and the comforting sea bream broth
in one sitting truly made it worth trying at least once during my Tokyo adventure.

If the thought of those famously long queues at the main branch feels a bit daunting,
I highly recommend checking out their other fantastic branches, like the one at Ark Hills, Kagurazaka, or Muromachi!
Just a heads-up: even the Ark Hills branch can get quite bustling during peak lunch hours,
with local office workers flocking in.
So, if you're able to, I'd highly recommend aiming for a visit around 11 AM or after the main lunch rush has passed. It'll make your experience even more relaxed and enjoyable!

When I visited around 12 PM on a Friday for lunch, I was able to be seated after waiting for about 20 minutes. The line was a bit long as it coincided with the lunch break for local office workers, but it moved relatively quickly.
The 'Take Kaisen-don' at Tsujihan Ark Hills is ~$12, including tax. It's a menu item that adds crab meat and salmon roe to the basic 'Ume' configuration.
When about one-third of your rice remains, place your bowl on the counter, and a staff member will pour warm sea bream broth over it. At this point, you can add the two slices of sashimi you saved earlier into the broth and enjoy it like Ochazuke.
