1.Tokyo Skyliner Timetable, Route & How to Book

The Tokyo Skyliner is
an airport express train you can use to travel quickly from Narita Airport to downtown Tokyo.
The Tokyo Skyliner route is super straightforward, don't you think?
It operates at a maximum speed of 160km/h,
connecting Airport Terminal 2 Station to Nippori Station
in as little as 36 minutes.
The Skyliner operates with all-reserved seating and
even has dedicated space for large suitcases, making it
a convenient mode of transport for travelers with lots of luggage.

The Tokyo Skyliner route, which gets you from Narita Airport to downtown Tokyo quickly,
is relatively simple.
After departing from Narita Airport Terminal 1 Station and
Terminal 2 & 3 (Airport Terminal 2 Station),
it stops at just two locations:
Nippori Station and Keisei Ueno Station,
with no intermediate stops.
At Nippori Station,
you can transfer to the JR Yamanote Line, and
Ueno Station is
a great place to start your Tokyo city sightseeing.
Tokyo Skyliner Timetable
During the daytime, Skyliner trains generally run about
every 20 minutes.
However, the operating intervals for the first and last trains, and certain time slots,
might differ, so make sure to
check the timetable for your travel date!
Especially after arriving at Narita Airport,
you'll need to factor in the time it takes for
immigration and baggage claim.
Skyliner Reservations and Prices
Tokyo Skyliner tickets can be purchased at
airport ticket counters and automatic ticket machines,
official sales channels, and travel platforms.

QR vouchers purchased online can be exchanged for physical tickets at
dedicated ticket machines or
designated counters, depending on the product.
We also exchanged our pre-purchased vouchers for physical tickets
at Narita Airport, then selected our
departure time and seats.
How to exchange your ticket, and where to do it,
keep reading in section 2!
2.How to Exchange Your Ticket and Board at Narita Airport Terminal 2

The place we used was
Narita Airport Terminal 2.
Our flight landed at 12:26 PM,
and we arrived at Terminal 2 around 12:40 PM.
After clearing immigration and picking up our luggage,
we headed to the B1F railway boarding area.
At 1:10 PM,
we exchanged our tickets at the Skyliner Information & Ticket Counter.

<Make sure to read to the end. I initially showed the wrong QR code ^^;>
At that time, the available
Tokyo Skyliner departure times for me to choose from were
1:22 PM and 1:42 PM.
I could have taken the 1:22 PM train,
but after getting the tickets and making a quick restroom stop,
getting to the platform felt a bit tight on time.
So, without rushing,
I chose the 1:42 PM departure.
By choosing a generous train time like this,
I had enough time to buy a Welcome Suica transit card
and get to the boarding platform.
In fact, I bought the Welcome Suica at 1:20 PM
and arrived at the platform around 1:30 PM.

When taking the Skyliner from Narita Airport,
be sure to check the sign colors too.
Skyliner is blue,
Access Express is orange!
On the day we traveled,
both trains used the same platform,
so we double-checked the train name and departure time
on the electronic display before boarding.

The seats indicated on our tickets were
4C and 4D.
Since all seats are reserved,
it wasn't hard to find our seats after boarding,
and it was convenient to move around with our luggage.
If it's your first time using it,
rather than rushing to choose the earliest train,
I recommend getting your tickets with ample time,
considering ticket exchange and platform transfer times.
3.How to Transfer to the JR Yamanote Line at Nippori Station

For those heading towards Shinjuku, Shibuya, Tokyo Station,
or Ginza,
it's much faster to get off at Nippori Station,
the stop just before the terminus,
rather than going all the way to Ueno Station.
We needed to go to the
Karaksa Hotel Premier Tokyo Ginza, located near Ginza.
That's why we didn't go all the way to Keisei Ueno Station,
the Skyliner's terminus,
and got off at Nippori Station instead.
We departed Narita Airport at 1:42 PM
and arrived at Nippori Station around 2:20 PM.

The advantage of Nippori Station is
The best part? Easy transfers to the JR Yamanote Line!
When you get off the Skyliner, you'll arrive on the lower floor platform.
Just follow the ‘Transfer to JR Lines’ signs
upstairs.
There, you'll find the JR line transfer gates.
No need to exit the station and re-enter;
it connects directly to the internal transfer gates (Gate B).
The transfer path is shorter than at Ueno Station,
and it's relatively easier to manage your luggage.
What you have | How to pass through the gate | Notes |
JR Paper Ticket | Insert ticket only | Simplest method |
IC Card Only (Suica/Pasmo, etc.) | Tap IC card only | Must check balance |
Keisei (Skyliner) Paper Ticket + IC Card | Insert paper ticket first → then tap IC card | The most confusing scenario |
Other cases | Buy and use a separate JR ticket | Use nearby ticket vending machines or manned counters |
You're supposed to insert your paper ticket first → then tap your IC card, but
it's easy to forget to tap the IC card.
Even if you've studied it beforehand, mistakes can happen.
The staff nearby are always ready to help, so don't worry!
And if you happen to insert the wrong ticket, it's absolutely fine.
Station staff at your destination will help you out again.
You just pay the additional fare that you would have paid by
tapping your IC card when you exited, and you're all set!
(Trust me, I've been there too! haha)
In Japan, when you tap your travel card and get off,
even if you have insufficient balance or bought the wrong ticket,
you can pay the additional fare at your destination station,
so no need to stress!
|
We took the JR Yamanote Line
train towards Tokyo and Shimbashi.
At that time, we boarded from Platform 10,
transferred to the train around 2:30 PM,
and arrived at Shimbashi Station at 2:50 PM.
From Shimbashi Station, we exited through the Ginza Exit and
walked to our hotel, which took about 7 minutes.
Nippori Station or Ueno Station: Where should you get off?
When you're booking your Skyliner ticket,
you might be wondering whether to get off at Nippori or Ueno.
It's actually quite simple: just choose based on your final destination!
Arrival Station | Recommended Destinations | Features |
Nippori Station | JR transfer areas like Tokyo Station, Shimbashi, Shibuya | Convenient for transfers to JR Yamanote Line, etc. |
Keisei Ueno Station | Ueno, Ameyoko, Ueno Park | Advantageous for accessing accommodations and tourist spots in the Ueno area |
Transportation Method | Travel Time (To central Tokyo) | One-way Fare | Key Stops & Features |
Tokyo Skyliner | Nippori 36 min Ueno 41 min | Approx. 2,300-2,500 JPY (discounts available with reservations) | All reserved seats, highest speed, optimized for JR transfers at Nippori Station |
Narita Express (N'EX) | Tokyo Station 60 min Shinjuku 80 min | Approx. 3,070 JPY~ | Direct to Shinjuku/Shibuya, no transfers, but wider service intervals |
Access Express (Local Express) | Asakusa 55 min Ginza 65 min | Approx. 1,350-1,420 JPY | Standard subway seating, no separate limited express ticket required, focus on value for money |

If you're heading towards Shimbashi or Ginza like we did,
consider transferring to JR at Nippori Station.
On the other hand, if your accommodation is near Ueno Station,
it's more convenient to go all the way to the final stop.
However, even for areas like Ginza, Shinjuku, or Shibuya,
the most convenient airport transportation can vary depending on your exact accommodation location.
So, it's always a good idea to check your route to your final destination
before booking, wouldn't you agree?

By now, you've probably realized that the Tokyo Skyliner is
a fast and comfortable airport express train that can whisk you away from
Narita Airport to Nippori and Ueno.
Thanks to choosing a train with ample time from the start,
we were able to prepare our transportation cards before boarding.
The transfer process to the JR Yamanote Line at Nippori Station
was also simpler than we expected.
If you're planning a trip to Tokyo,
be sure to check the Skyliner timetable and booking conditions
in advance.
It makes planning your first day's travel much smoother if you consider
not only your airport arrival time but also immigration and baggage claim!
