When planning a trip to Tokyo, one thing that often causes a bit of a headache is
how to get from Narita Airport to Ueno Station.
Since the airport is quite far from the city center, I really didn't want to drag my suitcase and
make multiple transfers on the subway.
But taking a taxi would be a huge burden on my wallet...
So, I opted for the most affordable option, the Skyliner.
It gets you to Ueno or Nippori in about 40 minutes,
and even Tokyo Station is just one easy JR transfer away from Nippori,
so it wasn't as difficult as I expected.
I'll break down everything from booking prices and timetables
to how to exchange your tickets :)
1. Tokyo Skyliner Routes and Timetable
When choosing transportation from Narita Airport to central Tokyo,
it's easiest to decide based on your accommodation's location.
Tokyo Station, Shibuya, Shinjuku → Narita Express
Nippori, Ueno → Skyliner
Tokyo Station, Ginza, Disneyland → Limousine Bus
In terms of price, it goes Limousine Bus > Narita Express > Skyliner,
making the Skyliner the most budget-friendly option!
The Skyliner takes approximately
35 minutes from Narita Airport to Nippori Station,
and about 40 minutes to Keisei Ueno Station.
With trains generally running every 20 minutes,
even if you miss one right in front of you,
you won't have to wait long for the next one!
A common question here is,
"Can I get to Tokyo Station on the Skyliner?"
It's not a direct train to Tokyo Station.
Instead, from Narita Airport →
take the Skyliner to Nippori Station →
then the JR Yamanote Line → to Tokyo Station.
It's just one easy transfer!
If your accommodation is in Ueno, Nippori, or Asakusa,
the Skyliner is especially convenient.
However, if Tokyo Station is your final destination,
consider the amount of luggage you have and whether you mind a transfer,
and compare it with the Narita Express N'EX!

2. Skyliner Booking & Price Comparison

3. My Tokyo Skyliner Experience
If you book in advance, you can simply exchange your voucher's QR code for a physical ticket at Narita Airport.
After arriving at the airport, just follow the 'Train·Railway' signs down to the B1 level.
You can exchange your ticket at the Information Center, the SKYLINER ticket counter, or a ticket machine.
Scan QR code → Select boarding time →
Choose your reserved seat → Issue ticket
What I particularly loved was that you don't have to finalize your train time when booking,
aligning it perfectly with your flight's arrival!
You get to choose your train and seat based on when you actually clear immigration,
which totally takes the stress out if your flight happens to be a little delayed.
Every seat on the train is reserved,
and the legroom is surprisingly generous!
There's ample space for your luggage, overhead racks,
free Wi-Fi, and even 110V power outlets, so I comfortably relaxed for the entire ~40-minute journey. 😉
After a long flight and clearing immigration,
your energy levels are already starting to dip, right? 😫
The biggest advantage of the Skyliner is that you don't have to haul your luggage onto a crowded regular subway;
instead, you can travel directly from Narita Airport to Ueno
in one go!

The Skyliner does not go directly from Narita Airport to Tokyo Station. You can reach Tokyo Station by transferring once to the JR Yamanote Line at Nippori Station.
From Narita Airport, it takes approximately 35 minutes to Nippori Station and about 40 minutes to Keisei Ueno Station on the Skyliner.
