For this trip to Japan,
I explored both Tokyo and Osaka.
While you can travel from Tokyo to Osaka by plane,
this time, I opted for the Shinkansen, something I've always wanted to experience.
When traveling in Japan,
you often see scenes in dramas or movies where people travel
while enjoying a bento box on a train.
It's quite iconic, isn't it?
I've always wanted to experience that romantic vibe myself,
and riding it in person was more comfortable than I imagined,
really setting the perfect travel mood.
Today, I'll share everything about
how I traveled from Tokyo to Osaka,
Shinkansen booking methods, prices, and even
tips for securing a Mount Fuji view seat.

Comparing Ways to Get from Tokyo to Osaka

There are three main ways to get from Tokyo to Osaka:
airplane, Shinkansen, and night bus.
While many people usually opt for airplanes,
you actually need to factor in the time to get to the airport,
check-in, and baggage.
On the other hand, the Shinkansen offers the convenience of
boarding directly from Tokyo Station and arriving at Shin-Osaka Station.
That was really easy.
I took the Nozomi from Tokyo Station to Shin-Osaka Station,
and it took about 2 hours and 30 minutes.
If you think of it in Korean terms,
it's quite similar to taking the KTX from Seoul to Busan.
That comparison might make it easier to understand.
However, Shinkansen prices can vary depending on when you book and the type of seat,
so it's a good idea to look into Shinkansen reservations in advance
once your travel dates are set.

Shinkansen Booking Methods and Prices
This time, I booked my Japan Shinkansen tickets
through Klook.
They are an official partner of Japan Railways,
and since you can book in Korean,
it's convenient for those who aren't familiar with Japanese.
1) Select your departure and arrival stations
After selecting "Japan Shinkansen" on Klook,
you'll need to enter your departure and arrival stations, and your travel date.
There's one important thing to note when searching for Tokyo → Osaka here:
the Shinkansen doesn't arrive at Osaka Station, but rather
Shin-Osaka Station!
From Shin-Osaka Station to downtown Osaka,
you'll need to take another transfer via subway or JR.
2) Choosing Your Time and Seat Type
Seats are broadly divided into Green Car, Reserved Seats,
and Non-Reserved Seats.
The Green Car has a 2-2 seating arrangement,
giving it a feel similar to the KTX First Class in Korea.
Standard Reserved Seats and Non-Reserved Seats have a 3-2 arrangement.
With Reserved Seats, you can choose your seat in advance when booking,
so you're guaranteed your preferred spot.
Non-Reserved Seats operate on a first-come, first-served basis within designated non-reserved cars,
meaning whoever sits first gets their desired seat.
This time, I opted for the cheapest Non-Reserved Seat.
If I were to ride again, the price difference isn't huge, so I think it would be best
to book a Reserved Seat and choose one with a good view of Mount Fuji.
3) Selecting Passengers and Options
After selecting the number of adults and children and checking the options,
you can even choose seats facing Mount Fuji separately.
If the additional cost is around ~$2,
I personally think it's well worth adding.
If you want to save that money, you can do what I did and use a Non-Reserved Seat,
arrive a bit early at the station to claim your desired spot,
and then use the saved money to buy a bento box or snacks at the station.
Shinkansen Mount Fuji View Seats
And here's the best tip I wanted to share when looking into how to get from Tokyo to Osaka:
You can see Mount Fuji while riding the Shinkansen!
When traveling from Tokyo towards Osaka,
seat E on the right-hand window side is the best spot to see Mount Fuji.
Unlike Korea's KTX, the standard Shinkansen cars have a
3-2 seating arrangement, with two seats on the right side;
the window seat among those is E.
Remember: for Mount Fuji, it's seat E!
Conversely, when returning from Osaka to Tokyo,
the direction changes, so you can see Mount Fuji from a window seat on the left side.
And for the Green Car, which has a 2-2 arrangement,
the window seat is D.
If you use a Non-Reserved Seat like I did,
it's important to arrive a bit early to secure your desired spot.
While non-reserved seats offer the advantage of flexibility,
you can't guarantee your preferred spot. Therefore,
if a Mount Fuji view is your goal, I recommend reserving seat E in advance.
Shinkansen Nozomi, Hikari, Kodama Differences
For routes from Tokyo to Osaka, travelers typically use
the Nozomi, Hikari, or Kodama trains.
If you want to travel fastest, Nozomi is the way to go.
Nozomi has the fewest stops,
allowing you to travel from Tokyo to Kyoto and Shin-Osaka the quickest.
Hikari has more stops than Nozomi, taking a bit longer,
while Kodama has the most stops and therefore takes the longest.
While all three trains are an option,
if your goal is to travel from Tokyo to Osaka,
the price difference isn't substantial, so I recommend Nozomi.
My Japanese Shinkansen Ride Review
My first proper Shinkansen experience this time
was much more comfortable than I expected.
What I loved most was being able to board directly at Tokyo Station
and travel all the way to Shin-Osaka Station without the hassle of airport transfers.
Watching the scenery outside the window and enjoying the snacks I'd prepared in advance,
it truly felt like the Japanese train journey I had always imagined.
It was a truly romantic experience.
While the Shinkansen might not be the most budget-friendly way to travel,
what I loved was how it transforms the journey itself
into an incredible experience.
If you're planning a trip combining Tokyo and Osaka,
don't just limit yourself to thinking about flights!

Taking the Shinkansen Nozomi from Tokyo Station to Shin-Osaka Station takes approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes. The cost starts from ~$87 and can vary depending on the booking time and seat type.
The Shinkansen arrives at Shin-Osaka Station, not Osaka Station. After arriving at Shin-Osaka Station, you will need to take the subway or JR to reach central Osaka.
