Tokyo May Weather Guide 2026: Packing & Itinerary Tips
Just returned from Tokyo? This guide shares real-time May 2026 weather, smart packing advice, and a fun itinerary featuring top attractions for your perfect trip.

Just returned from a fantastic trip to Tokyo, and I'm eager to share all the essential tips for those planning a visit in May!
Let's dive into Tokyo's May weather, real-time outfit advice, and an exciting travel itinerary to help you make the most of your adventure!
Tokyo Weather in May

First off, May in Tokyo is surprisingly warm! The average temperature hovers around 68°F (20°C), with highs reaching up to 79°F (26°C). Expect plenty of sunshine, so if you're planning lots of outdoor activities, sunscreen and a parasol are absolute must-haves.

It also rains quite frequently, so don't forget to pack a compact umbrella. Rainy days can be very humid and feel significantly cooler than sunny days, leading to noticeable temperature swings.
What to Wear & Packing Essentials

So, what should you pack? I mostly wore short-sleeved tops with shorts or light, breathable long skirts, and I brought along a few thin cardigans.

The sun can be quite intense during the day, making it feel very hot. There were many times I found myself taking off my cardigan. My husband, who wore long cotton pants with a t-shirt and cardigan, often found himself overheating during the daytime.

However, on rainy days and in the evenings, it can get a bit chilly, so a cardigan is definitely a good idea to have on hand.
Recommended Travel Itinerary

I personally prefer sightseeing over shopping, so my itinerary focused on tourist attractions and theme parks.
My first stop was Chiikawa Park in Ikebukuro! Chiikawa is a hugely popular character animation in Japan. I just watched a rough overview of the story on YouTube before going, but the characters are so adorable that it was fun even without knowing all the details!

Next up on the recommended itinerary is Fuji-Q Highland! This amusement park is famous for its "Big 4 Thrill Rides." With roller coasters reaching top speeds of around 81 mph (130 km/h), seats that rotate forwards and backward, and drops at a terrifying 121-degree angle, it's a paradise for adrenaline junkies.

As for me, I'm a bit of a scaredy-cat, so I skipped the super intense rides and enjoyed the Naruto Theme Park and Attack on Titan attraction instead, haha! If you're a Naruto fan, I highly recommend taking a photo with Gamakichi and trying the Ichiraku Ramen!

*While onsite purchase is an option, booking in advance online is often more affordable!

I dedicated an entire day to the Tokyo Harry Potter Studio Tour! I've visited the Harry Potter Studio Tour in the UK before, and now the one in Tokyo. The overall experience isn't drastically different, but I felt that Tokyo offered more photo opportunities!

When in Tokyo, you simply can't miss seeing Mount Fuji! I took a Mount Fuji tour from Kawaguchiko, a nearby area. Since I planned to stay overnight, I rented a car for a self-guided trip. If you're doing a day trip, I highly recommend a bus tour to efficiently hit all the key spots.

May in Tokyo brings significant temperature fluctuations, so it's wise to plan your outfits and essentials in advance. Make sure to pack a parasol, sunscreen, a light cardigan, and a portable umbrella – these are absolute must-haves!
Wishing you a fantastic Tokyo trip!☺️
