Tokyo, Japan July & August Weather & Outfit Guide
Essential Packing Tips + Flight Info You Need to Know Before You Go
When you're planning a trip to Tokyo, Japan in July or August,
the very first things you'll probably look up are
the weather and what to wear.
Before I left, I thought, "It'll probably just be like a typical hot summer day back home,"
but once I arrived, what made it so much tougher than expected was...
the scorching sun and intense humidity.
I spent so much time worrying: *Will short sleeves be enough? Can I wear sandals? Is a UV parasol all I need?*
To give you the short answer: I highly recommend packing a light cardigan and a pair of comfy sneakers.

1. Tokyo Weather in July & August

July is when summer officially kicks into high gear.
While the average temperature sits around 25°C to 29°C (77°F to 84°F),
daytime temperatures often soar well past 30°C (86°F).
The rainy season usually winds down by mid-July,
but lately, sudden localized showers have been pretty common.
It's always a good idea to double-check the forecast right before you leave!

August is the hottest month of the year in Tokyo.
The average temperature ranges from 26°C to 31°C (79°F to 88°F),
but highs can easily spike up to around 35°C (95°F).
Besides the high temperatures, the intense midday sun makes the
real-feel temperature feel much hotter than it actually is.
2. My Honest Experience (What It’s Really Like)

I visited Tokyo at the end of last July.
And honestly, the thing that shocked me most was how incredibly strong the sun was.
Walking in areas with no shade literally felt like I was melting...
Even with a UV parasol, which helped a bit,
my face would turn red after just a short walk.
You could just feel the heat radiating straight onto your skin...

The humidity was another level of exhausting.
During the day, the sun was so intense
that I couldn't even tell if I was sticky from the humidity or just drenched in sweat,
but when I got back to my accommodation, even with the AC running non-stop,
everything still felt damp and sticky rather than crisp and dry.
And late at night or early in the morning when the sun wasn't even out, the air outside was still super muggy...
3. Tokyo Outfit Recommendations for July & August

My absolute favorite outfit combo for the scorching Japanese summer is
a sleeveless top (or sundress) paired with a bolero/shrug.
This was hands down my most successful outfit of the trip.
Cardigans or thin linen shirts are great, too,
but a bolero was amazing because it lightly covered my shoulders and arms
while keeping things breezy and cool.
Linen shirts are a solid choice,
but just a heads-up: they can stick to your skin once you start sweating.

I also tried going out in just a short-sleeved t-shirt.
Even though my parasol blocked the direct sunlight,
the heavy, hot air still pressed directly against my bare skin,
making me feel almost suffocated.
That’s why, for a Tokyo summer, instead of just packing short sleeves,
I highly recommend bringing a light long-sleeved layer to throw on top.
4. Essential Items to Pack

✅ Parasol / Umbrella
Just blocking the direct sunlight makes the temperature feel so much cooler.
My sibling and I only packed one,
so sharing it was definitely a struggle.
Having one parasol per person is an absolute must. Seriously!!
+ Don't forget to pack a pair of sunglasses too! 😎

✅ Comfortable Sneakers
Thinking about something lightweight and fashionable (or so I thought?)...
I bought a brand new pair of sandals the day before the trip.
But thanks to the scorching heat radiating from the asphalt,
the glue literally melted, and my sandals broke after just one day.
In the end, I had to leave them behind in Japan.
Unlike what you might be used to, there aren't many places
to sit down and take a quick break,
so I highly recommend packing a comfortable pair of sneakers.
To make matters worse, those sandals had zero cushioning,
so it literally felt like my bare soles were hitting the pavement...

✅ Hand Towel / Handkerchief
This was hands-down the most-used item of the trip!
You only have to walk a little bit before sweat starts pouring down your face,
so having a small towel handy is incredibly useful.
It's perfect for wiping off sweat, and if you drape it over your head for a second,
it actually blocks the sun quite well. It's surprisingly versatile!

✅ Sunscreen
The summer sun in Japan is incredibly intense.
You can literally feel your skin screaming for protection
if you don't apply sunscreen.
A lot of people highly recommend Japanese sunscreens.
You could easily grab one at a local drugstore after you arrive.
Since you'll be sweating a lot, a waterproof formula is definitely the way to go!
5. My Biggest Regret

My biggest regret was definitely underestimating the intensity of the sun.
I thought I'd be completely fine as long as I put on sunscreen,
but the heat hitting my skin
was so intense that it literally felt like my skin was burning.
In the end, I even developed a mild sun allergy after returning home,
which was a total pain to deal with for a while 😭
Looking back on the trip, I really wish I'd packed another parasol,
wished I hadn't just worn short sleeves the whole time...
and really wished I had brought an extra pair of comfortable sneakers. ㅠㅠ
6. Visiting Tokyo in July & August? Pack Like This!

If you only look at the temperatures, Tokyo in July and August
might seem pretty similar to hot summers elsewhere.
하지만 실제로는 강한 햇볕과 높은 습도로
체감 더위가 훨씬 심하게 느껴졌습니다.
But of course, if those are your only vacation dates, you've got to go!
If you're planning a summer getaway to Tokyo,
while you can't completely escape the heat,
being just a little more prepared will make your trip so much more comfortable!
You can't have a trip without booking flights!
⬇️⬇️⬇️ Here's a handy tip for booking flights!! ⬇️⬇️⬇️

If you select your departure point and desired destinations, you can compare prices at a single glance.
For late August, Osaka turned out to be the cheapest option.
Though honestly, it wasn't a massive difference compared to Fukuoka, haha.
As for Tokyo, if the flight is under ~$192, it's considered quite cheap and a great deal.
I went around late July and got my ticket in the high $100s (around ~$180).

The average temperature in July is between 25℃ and 29℃, and in August it is around 26℃ to 31℃, making it the hottest time in Tokyo. During the day, the temperature can rise to around 35℃, and the sensible temperature is much higher due to strong sunlight and high humidity.
If you only wear short sleeves, the surrounding intense heat will hit your skin directly, which can make it feel suffocating and like your skin is burning. It is recommended to bring and layer light long-sleeved clothes, such as a breathable bolero or a thin cardigan.
It is recommended to bring comfortable sneakers with good cushioning. The intense heat from the asphalt can melt the glue on sandals, causing them to break in just one day, and there are not many places to sit and rest while walking on the streets.
As of late July, flights to Tokyo can be booked for around ~$179 to ~$191. Generally, if the price of a flight to Tokyo does not exceed ~$192, it is considered cheap.
