If you're looking for an unforgettable culinary experience in Tokyo's upscale Ginza district, you absolutely have to check out 'Katsudon Makes People Happy.' This place lives up to its name, promising a dish that will truly bring a smile to your face!

Fair warning: this spot is incredibly popular, and during peak hours, you can expect a wait time easily exceeding an hour. To avoid a long queue, I highly recommend planning your visit during off-peak times.

I visited on a weekend around 2:00 PM, and the line stretched out of the restaurant and down the stairs! I ended up waiting a little over an hour to get in.

Since reservations aren't possible and it's strictly walk-in only, aiming for a slightly earlier lunch or later afternoon visit is definitely your best bet.

Interior Ambiance

The cozy interior features counter seating exclusively, offering a great view of the open kitchen where the magic happens. Each spot is well-equipped with tonkatsu sauce, salt, and salad dressing.

Despite its compact size, they've thought of everything, even providing handy coat hangers for your outerwear!

Their signature dishes are the classic Katsu-don (around 5 oz) and the Tonkatsu Set (also around 5 oz)! We were feeling hungry, so we opted for the larger 'Special' size, which comes with a generous ~8 oz portion!

Katsu-don & Tonkatsu

First up, the Katsu-don arrived, served alongside a comforting bowl of warm noodles and some delicious pickles.

Honestly, I almost regretted ordering the ~8 oz portion because it was absolutely massive! Haha.

If you're not a big eater, the ~5 oz size will definitely be more than enough to satisfy you.

The pork cutlet itself was incredibly thick, and the breading? Perfectly crisp! It had that ideal crunch without being greasy or soggy – just the kind of satisfying texture you crave.

While it's fantastic on its own, do yourself a favor and drizzle some of the sweet tare sauce, available at your table, over your katsu-don!

This sweet and savory glaze perfectly complements the crispy cutlet. And when you combine it all with the fluffy egg on top of the rice? Pure bliss! 🩷

Next, we tried the Tonkatsu Set. While the cutlet itself was quite similar to the one in the katsu-don, my personal recommendation leans towards the katsu-don. The delightful combination of the crispy cutlet with the egg and rice truly elevates the experience.

I overheard many fellow diners, both men and women, commenting on the generous portions – it's clear everyone leaves feeling incredibly satisfied, if not completely stuffed! Haha.

Both the katsu-don and tonkatsu were absolutely delicious and offered fantastic value. I'd definitely make a return trip.
