If you’re planning a trip to Japan, you’re probably wondering about the best way to stay connected.
Even at home, slow data can be frustrating, but imagine being abroad without reliable internet. It makes searching for information or navigating unfamiliar streets incredibly difficult.
Today, I’m excited to introduce you to eSIM, a fantastic data roaming solution for Japan. I’ll walk you through how to use it, offer tips for choosing the right data plan, and compare it with traditional SIM cards!
While many travelers are familiar with physical SIM cards for Japan, eSIMs might be a new concept for some. Let’s compare eSIMs and traditional SIM cards.

First, let’s go over the pros and cons of a physical SIM card.
📍 A physical SIM card works with any phone that uses a SIM chip, regardless of the model.
Plus, it’s incredibly straightforward to use: simply remove your existing SIM and insert the new one. You’ll be connected instantly!
However, there’s the inconvenience of having to pick up a physical SIM at the airport or waiting for it to be delivered by mail. There’s also the risk of losing your original SIM card. Since it’s a physical item, it tends to be a bit pricier compared to an eSIM.
Next, let’s delve into the advantages and disadvantages of an eSIM.
📍 An eSIM can be purchased in advance and easily installed using a QR code before you even leave home. Since there's no physical chip, it's generally more affordable. And because it installs alongside your existing SIM, you can still receive texts and calls to your original number while abroad.
However, there are a couple of downsides. Since it requires some phone settings adjustments after installation, it might be a bit tricky for first-time users. Also, older phone models may not be compatible with eSIM technology.

For iPhones, you’ll need an XS model or newer. For Samsung Galaxy devices, only relatively recent models like the S23, Z Fold 4, or later are compatible. If your phone isn’t on this list, you’ll unfortunately need to opt for a 👉🏻 physical SIM card instead.

1. Choosing Your Data Volume
First up is how to choose your data volume.
Data plans range widely, from 500MB per day to unlimited options.
If you only plan to use the internet for simple tasks like checking maps or browsing travel blogs, ▶️ 2-3 GB per day is usually sufficient.
However, if you're a heavy user who loves social media, streaming YouTube videos, or simply dislikes the thought of slow data, ▶️ 5 GB or unlimited data will be much more practical.
2. Choosing Your Carrier
Next, let's talk about carriers. I consistently use Softbank.
I’ve used them for years, and I’ve always had uninterrupted service, which gives me peace of mind.
Generally, you won't notice a huge difference in data speed between carriers, so feel free to choose the cheapest option that meets your needs.
Finally, I’ll share my experience using Klook’s Japan eSIM during my 4-day Tokyo trip in January 2026.
I’m the kind of person who turns on their data as soon as the plane lands. As soon as my flight touched down at Narita Airport, I activated my eSIM, and the data was instantly live and ready to use.
Whether I was traveling on the Skyliner or venturing out on a tour to nearby Shizuoka, I experienced no data interruptions, which made finding travel information incredibly easy.
Even in crowded areas like Kabukicho late at night, or at popular attractions like the Harry Potter Studio, my connection remained stable and fast.
