A 2-Hour Night Walk Including Sumida River

I really love the Asakusa area in Tokyo,

so I decided to stay there

and visited Sensoji Temple both during the day and at night.

If your daytime travel plans don't quite align,

and you're wondering, "Should I visit Sensoji for its night view?"

then this post is for you!

During the day, I took a walking tour

to learn about the history and discover hidden photo spots.

Then, after dinner, I visited again separately.

Around 6:30 PM, most of the shops start to close,

so if you're going during the day, I recommend visiting before 5 PM, or when it's completely dark.

Is it okay to visit Sensoji at night?

Visiting after the lights come on

actually made the atmosphere even better!

While the main shops on Nakamise-dori were all closed,

there were no throngs of tourists haggling in shops or indulging in street food,

allowing you to leisurely soak in the ambiance.

The shopping streets on either side of Sensoji

do stay open until around 9 PM, but

aside from a drugstore or so,

there isn't much else to see or explore there.

Asakusa Night Stroll Course

From Asakusa Station -> Sensoji Temple

-> Sumida River -> View of Tokyo Skytree

This is the route I took:

I recommend visiting between 8 PM and 9 PM.

After 11 PM, some of the illuminations might turn off,

so strolling during that recommended time

and then heading to a yakitori spot to wrap up your day is just perfect!

First, make sure to snap some photos at the entrance,

where the red lanterns glow beautifully.

During the day, it's virtually impossible to get a clear shot

of the center without people in the way,

but at night, with the Sensoji illuminations, it's absolutely doable!

The Five-Story Pagoda is also beautifully lit up,

creating a truly atmospheric scene with its gentle illumination.

This spot right in front is another fantastic photo zone!

And then there's the Main Hall.

Its subtle lighting is absolutely stunning, isn't it?

I remember seeing couples sitting on the steps,

quietly chatting – it looked so beautiful and perfectly fitting.

Such a memorable moment...✨

And when you think of Asakusa Sensoji,

you'll definitely want to try the fortune slips!

✅ Is it possible at night? Absolutely!

Since it's an unmanned machine where you insert 100 yen and pick one,

you can easily do it even if you're visiting for the night view.

Just insert 100 yen,

draw one, and get your fortune slip corresponding to the number.

Of course, since it's in Japanese,

you'll want to use Papago (or any translation app) to understand your fortune.

Honestly, you might find quite a few 'unlucky' fortunes! 😂

But that just makes it feel like a truly authentic fortune, which is even better!

If your fortune isn't so great, they say you can tie it up nearby.

The place to buy incense closes in the evening,

so you'll only be able to admire it from afar.

Some pass tickets include a 'wish stick',

but if you're visiting Sensoji for the night view, you won't be able to use it.

Keep this in mind when purchasing your tickets!

Walking around and taking photos like this takes about

30 minutes to an hour.

Then, there's the promenade leading towards the Sumida River.

Strolling along the riverbank,

enjoying the Skytree view, adds another hour or so.

So, that's how I enjoyed the night views on a roughly two-hour course! ✨
