Flights to Tokyo are usually quite expensive,
but with the recent scorching summer off-season,
airfares have become relatively affordable.
This is the perfect opportunity to plan an affordable Tokyo trip!
When you're suddenly planning a trip to Tokyo,
you might wonder what to pack, where to stay,
and how to create the perfect itinerary.
Today, I'll share everything from essential Tokyo travel preparations
to accommodation locations, itineraries, and budget tips!
First off, for those of you planning a Tokyo adventure,
here are three absolute must-haves.
📍 The most crucial thing is your Japanese roaming solution.
Most travelers find communication in Japanese challenging,
aren't familiar with Japanese geography or subway lines,
and might struggle with directions to their destinations.
Therefore, if you don't have data roaming,
it's practically impossible to navigate Tokyo.
There are various data roaming options like carrier roaming, pocket Wi-Fi, eSIMs, and physical SIM cards,
but personally, I highly recommend an eSIM.
They're affordable, and the data speeds are comparable,
which is why I always use an eSIM.

📍 The second essential is a Skyliner ticket,
and the third is a Tokyo Metro Pass.
These two items are so crucial that you simply can't visit Tokyo without them.
First, the Skyliner is the fastest train service from Tokyo Narita Airport
to downtown Tokyo, specifically Nippori or Ueno.
However, since its final stop is Ueno, to get to other areas in central Tokyo,
you'll need to transfer to the subway.
This is where the Metro Pass comes in handy – it allows you to ride the Tokyo Metro subway for free for a specific duration.
If you prepare these two tickets in advance,
you can save a bit on transportation costs in Tokyo, Japan,
where transport can be quite expensive.

Next up, for those of you traveling to Tokyo,
I'll recommend the best locations and hotels to stay in.
The place I'd highly recommend for an amazing hotel stay is
none other than Shinjuku, the heart of Tokyo.
Shinjuku is a massive hub with four or five stations concentrated in one area,
meaning you can access most subway and train lines with ease.
What's more, to the east of the station, you'll find Omoide Yokocho, perfect for travelers seeking an authentic local vibe,
and Kabukicho, which truly comes alive at night.
This means there's always something exciting to do, even late into the evening.
To enjoy all these benefits while also snagging an affordable price,
the hotel I recommend is MyStays Nishi Shinjuku.
Located northwest of Shinjuku Station, this accommodation is
within a 5-minute walk of various Shinjuku stations, and
it's also situated in a quiet area in the evenings, so you won't be disturbed by noise.
Yet, it's still not too far from Kabukicho, making it a perfectly convenient spot for a night out.

Next up, I'll share my personal
3-night, 4-day Tokyo travel itinerary and course.
Day 1
First off, getting into central Tokyo takes longer than you might think,
so it's tough to squeeze in a lot on the first day.
Since I took an afternoon flight, I arrived in the city late in the evening.
Therefore, as soon as I arrived, I headed straight to Shinjuku's Kabukicho area for dinner.
After a delicious dinner at Yumezake Izakaya,
I did some quick shopping at the nearby Don Quijote.
Don Quijote is usually open 24 hours, so I highly recommend shopping there late in the evening!
Day 2
On the second day, I embarked on a Mount Fuji area tour.
While there are many places to view Mount Fuji,
I chose a tour that explored various attractions in Yamanashi Prefecture, located north of Mount Fuji.
Through the tour, I visited five incredible spots: Kawaguchiko Lawson convenience store, Oishi Park,
Arakurayama Sengen Park, Hitakawa Watch Shop,
and Oshino Hakkai.
It was truly breathtaking to gaze upon Mount Fuji's diverse beauty from each of these locations.
Especially on the day I visited, the sky was perfectly clear without a single cloud,
allowing me to see Mount Fuji's peak in all its glory.
It's definitely a must-visit place in Japan, and since it's not too far from Tokyo,
I highly recommend dedicating a day to a tour there!

Book Your Tokyo Mount Fuji Bus Tour
After finishing the Mount Fuji bus tour, I returned to Shinjuku and
enjoyed a fantastic food tour around the city!
For the first round, at 'Yukjeup Gyoza Dandadan' (Juicy Dumplings Dandadan), I enjoyed gyoza and
yuringi with about two beers. For the second round,
I freely indulged in seafood, sake, and beer at 'Osashimiya Sumiyoshi,'
a local sashimi izakaya nearby.
And for the perfect late-night hangover cure, I headed to 'Kuramu,' a late-night ramen spot in Kabukicho,
and enjoyed their delicious clam ramen.
It's definitely true that Shinjuku has so many izakayas and ramen shops open late, making it a fantastic place to enjoy the evening!
Day 3
For the first agenda item of Day 3, I visited the nearby
Musashino Suntory Beer Factory.
For just 1,000 yen, you get not only a guided factory tour but also three beer tastings, making it a wonderful place for a unique experience.
Since the location is a bit out of the way, you'll find more locals than Koreans, which really enhances that authentic Japanese feeling.
After finishing our morning beer factory visit, we then headed to the
Warner Bros. Studio Tour Tokyo – The Making of Harry Potter.
The Harry Potter Studio Tour brilliantly recreates movie characters and sets, allowing you to relive the magic of the films. It was truly fascinating to learn about the behind-the-scenes moments and filming techniques used during the making of the movies.
What's more, with so many photo spots created throughout, it's a place where any Harry Potter fan could easily spend half a day or even longer!

After exploring the Harry Potter Studio Tour and returning to the city, it was already evening.
To immerse myself in the local vibe, I sought out an izakaya in the 'Guard Shita' area, stretching between Yurakucho and Shinbashi.
I chose Sandaime Torimero, a cost-effective yakitori chain. Even though I ate to my heart's content, it was surprisingly affordable, costing around 2,000 yen.
Finally, I wrapped up the day by shopping for souvenirs at a nearby Don Quijote and various supermarkets.
Day 4
The final Day 4 was dedicated to returning home to Korea, so I headed straight to the airport as soon as I woke up.
From Shinjuku to Narita Airport, it takes approximately...
Since you'll need to allocate about an hour and a half for the journey,
I recommend setting off with a little extra time.
Narita Airport has plenty of restaurants open from morning,
including some budget-friendly chains like Yoshinoya and Matsuya,
so you can enjoy one last delicious meal at the airport before heading back.
I've covered everything from essential Tokyo travel items
to a 3-night, 4-day itinerary, but I bet you're wondering,
how much did it actually cost?
For one person, flights were approximately ~$276,
accommodation for 3 nights (including a weekend) was about ~$311,
tours, transportation, and attraction tickets came to about ~$117,
and local food expenses, etc., were around ~$186.
So, the total cost for one person for a 3-night, 4-day trip was
approximately ~$897, which is quite high.
Since I traveled over a weekend,
flights and accommodation were indeed quite expensive,
and I spent a lot at izakayas in the evenings, so
food expenses ended up being higher than expected.
It's probably good to plan your trip with an estimate of around ~$690 in mind!
