Discover Tio Papelon, a fantastic spot for quick and delicious Venezuelan food just steps from Barcelona's iconic Sagrada Familia. Perfect for a speedy lunch!
After an incredibly satisfying Gaudi tour with our fantastic guide, Hamincheol,
my partner and I were ready for some lunch.
That's when we stumbled upon Tio Papelon.

One Hour to Spare Before Sagrada Familia Entry? Grab a Quick Lunch!
Our Gaudi tour wrapped up around 1 PM right in front of the Sagrada Familia, but our timed entry for the cathedral's interior wasn't until 2 PM.
With only an hour for lunch, venturing too far seemed risky. Yet, after an early start and a morning of exploring, skipping a meal was out of the question!
So, we set out to find a spot right near the Sagrada Familia where we could enjoy a relatively quick bite – and that's how we discovered this gem!

Venezuelan Flavors Steps from the Cathedral
Tio Papelon specializes in delicious Venezuelan cuisine, offering dishes like arepas and empanadas.
My partner, who has a knack for finding highly-rated restaurants on Google Maps, found this spot!
Though Venezuelan food wasn't something we typically encountered, choosing our meals was a breeze thanks to the large, clear menu photos on the self-service kiosk. We could select the English menu and complete our order and card payment all at once, which was incredibly convenient!

The restaurant had a casual, fast-food-like atmosphere, perfect for a quick, no-fuss meal. When we visited, it wasn't overly crowded, so our food arrived pretty quickly.
As someone who tends to be a bit of a 'planner' (a true J-type!), I was slightly anxious about our Sagrada Familia entry time, so I was relieved we didn't have to wait long.
Bonus: The staff were all super friendly, and they even had Wi-Fi, which was a huge plus!

Our First Taste of Venezuelan Cuisine
I always struggle to remember the names of dishes I eat when traveling, so this time, I made sure to snap a pic of the receipt! ✨
We ordered a Cazón Empanada, a Roasted Pork Arepa, and a Spanish Orange Fanta.
✔️
When choosing sauces at the kiosk, the names didn't mean anything to us, so we just picked based on intuition. Turns out, the sauces came in full bottles anyway, so we could mix and match as we pleased with our dishes. All that deliberation was unnecessary, haha!

Empanada
The empanada was plump and crescent-shaped, fried to a golden crisp, almost like a savory, slightly greasy doughnut.
Our Cazón Empanada was filled with fish, offering a unique flavor that was distinct from any dumpling or fried pastry we'd had before. Drizzled with the accompanying sauce, it was absolutely delicious!

Arepa
The arepa featured a corn-based bread generously stuffed with shredded roasted pork.
Unlike typical wheat bread, the arepa had a fluffy, wholesome texture. Paired with the savory meat, it created a novel and delightful combination we hadn't experienced before.

Both dishes were generously filled and a bit on the greasy side, making them a little messy to eat. But after a full morning of walking and exploring, this hearty lunch was incredibly satisfying and tasty.
For my partner and me, who love trying new foods while traveling, this was a fun and memorable meal! 💛
If you find yourself with an awkward gap before or after your Sagrada Familia entry, this is a fantastic spot nearby for a quick and delicious bite!
And if you're looking to try something beyond the usual Spanish tapas and paella, Tio Papelon comes highly recommended! ✨
After our delightful lunch, we made our way to the Sagrada Familia, arriving perfectly on time and feeling completely relaxed.
I'll be sure to share our experience inside the Sagrada Familia and climbing the Passion Facade tower soon! ✍🏻🇪🇸
According to the article, we visited Tio Papelon with an hour remaining until our 2 PM entry to the Sagrada Familia. The restaurant wasn't crowded, so the food came out relatively quickly, and we were able to finish our meal without a long wait.
