The Okura Tokyo Review 2026: Private In-Room Sauna
Looking for an authentic luxury stay in Tokyo? Read our review of The Okura Tokyo, featuring stunning Japanese aesthetics and a private in-room sauna.

Perfect for a rainy day in Tokyo,
a 5-star hotel beloved by locals
| The Okura Tokyo

When you search for luxury 5-star hotel recommendations in Tokyo,
you always see the same top hits:
Janu Tokyo, Aman Tokyo, and The Tokyo Edition.
Instead of those usual suspects,
I wanted to try somewhere unique and spent some time at an incredible 5-star gem.
A Tokyo hotel deeply loved by the locals,
and still largely a hidden gem for travelers:
The Okura Tokyo

During my trip to Tokyo,
I stayed here for two nights,
and was absolutely captivated by the stunning, authentic Japanese scenery
and the clean, thoughtful details at every turn.
The Okura Tokyo,
from its location and rooms to the breakfast, service,
and even the in-room steam sauna.
Here is my honest Tokyo travel review!
The Okura Tokyo
Location & Address
2 Chome-10-4, Minato City, Tokyo 105-0001, Japan
📍 The Okura Tokyo
2-chōme-10-4 Toranomon, Minato City, Tokyo 105-0001, Japan
The Okura Tokyo is located
in Tokyo’s Minato City.
With the US Embassy right in front of it, it might just be the safest neighborhood in Japan!
It's also super close to Roppongi.
And it's much closer to Haneda Airport than Narita Airport.
You can easily walk past the Janu Tokyo hotel
and reach Azabudai Hills—
Tokyo’s trendiest hot spot right now.
The surrounding neighborhood feels upscale, clean, and exclusive—very chic.
On my first trip to Tokyo, I think I saw a more chaotic side of the city...
but this stay made me realize
all over again just how luxurious and wonderful a destination Tokyo can be!
The Okura Tokyo
Room Condition & Choice

With the Okura Museum of Art situated right in the center,
there are two distinct buildings: the modern Prestige Wing
and the traditionally elegant Heritage Wing.
While the two wings are connected on the ground floor,
they offer completely different vibes.
Personally,
if you are planning to stay at The Okura Tokyo,
I highly, highly recommend booking a room in the Heritage Wing!

Rooms in the Prestige Wing look something like this, offering sparkling city night views. They are relatively cheaper than the Heritage Wing rooms, but personally, I felt they lacked that unique wow-factor...

You won’t find many photos of the Heritage Wing on the official website,
but in a city infamous for tiny hotel rooms,
it offers a massive 60㎡ (about 645 sq ft) of space.
The floor-to-ceiling windows look out over a stunning Japanese garden and the beautiful museum building—it is absolutely spectacular.

Walking past the hallway of The Okura Tokyo, you enter right into...
...this stunning combined living and bedroom area!

The city view framing the floor-to-ceiling windows (a beautiful mix of the hotel's garden and the skyline)
was incredibly refreshing.
This is the Junior Suite room in the Heritage Wing of The Okura Tokyo.

There's a spacious seating area with a wrap-around sofa...
And that Japanese-style lantern lamp by the window is absolutely gorgeous...

From here, you get a great view of the weeping willow—almost like a mascot of The Okura Tokyo—and
the traditional Japanese architecture of the museum.

Some rooms at The Okura Tokyo come with a balcony,
but those were fully booked...
Honestly, though, I think this room without a balcony
might actually be the better choice!
Right next to the bed, you get another expansive, wide-open view through the floor-to-ceiling window.

Of course, you can draw the sheer curtains
for a soft, silhouetted look,
or close the secondary blackout curtains to make it completely dark.
As expected of a 5-star Tokyo hotel, The Okura featured
an incredibly comfortable bed and luxurious bedding.
What really caught my attention on the bed
was this unique neck pillow—
it supported my neck so perfectly and felt so refreshing... I seriously wanted to take it home with me.

Right next to the bed, the room connects directly
to a massive bathroom featuring a walk-in shower.

The Heritage Wing rooms at The Okura Tokyo
feature a floor-to-ceiling window right by the bathtub,
so you can enjoy the beautiful view of the US Embassy building
while having a relaxing bath or a sauna session.

(** And yes, of course, you can lower the blinds for complete privacy from the outside! 🤫)
The Okura Tokyo Hotel Amenities

The in-room amenities at The Okura Tokyo
were from Bamford,
and I absolutely loved the herbal, woody scent.
Unlike many Tokyo hotels, they provided a full-sized tube of toothpaste,
and they were super generous with the body lotion too!

Also, at The Okura Tokyo...
They provided this set of facial cleanser, lotion, and cream—something I've honestly never seen a hotel give out before!
Talk about incredible attention to detail...
And the face lotion they provided was so hydrating without feeling sticky at all... It was even perfect for my sensitive skin.
Oh, and by the way, the hair dryer in the room is a Dyson!
The dryer actually felt so much better than my Airwrap at home... I lowkey wanted to swap my Airwrap for it lol.

And now for...
The absolute best feature of The Okura Tokyo...
You can enjoy your very own private steam sauna right in your room!
Just press that green "steam sauna" button in the bathroom,
wait 30 minutes,
and the shower room right next to the tub fills up with soothing steam...
While finding a traditional ryokan or hot spring in the heart of Tokyo can be tough, you can still get your ultimate sauna fix right here!

Right next to the spacious shower at The Okura Tokyo,
there's a sliding door opening up to this handy luggage storage space,

And closer to the entrance, tucked away behind another sliding door,
was this cute, private restroom.

At The Okura Tokyo, you can either
borrow chargers from the desk,
or simply plug in using the built-in USB and Type-C ports.
(The only tiny downside was that there wasn't a Type-C port right by the bed.
But hey, it actually stopped me from scrolling on my phone before sleep, so maybe it was a blessing in disguise!)

Unlike what you might expect from typical Tokyo hotels,
everything in the mini-fridge, plus the snacks and nuts next to it, were completely free!
We could enjoy all the beer and soft drinks,
and the complimentary blueberry drink provided by the hotel was delicious too.
They also supplied plenty of Fuji mineral water
along with alkaline water bottles all over the room.
I loved how we never had to worry about running out of water.

I was also so impressed by how the electric kettle and its power dock
were stored in separate, neat compartments.
Such a clean and thoughtful touch!
They had an amazing variety of glassware too—
from espresso cups and tea teacups to elegant tumblers.

Hotel Guest Services

When you check in at The Okura Tokyo,
they welcome you with refreshing tea and a sweet welcome ice cream.
The ice cream was seriously to die for...

And since it was my birthday, they surprised me with this!
ㅠ _ ㅠ Getting a gorgeous bouquet of flowers in Tokyo was so incredibly touching...

Oh, and since Tokyo is practically the capital of matcha,
The Okura Tokyo served up these delicious matcha chocolates
as a welcome treat!
They were absolutely divine.

Also,
they prepared this lovely gift that truly lives up to a 5-star Tokyo luxury hotel.
It comes in this elegant red box,
and when you open it...

Inside, there are charming little traditional Japanese toys,
a beautiful traditional Japanese fan (which looks like it would cost quite a bit in a boutique!),
and an exclusive pouch from The Okura Tokyo.
The fan and the pouch were both so beautiful.
I thought the black fan looked sleeker, so I claimed that one for myself haha.
(But I think I accidentally left the pouch behind at the hotel... crying tears of regret right now ㅠㅠㅠ
)

Since this was a 3-day, 2-night trip to Tokyo,
I had my room made up on the second day.
Look at what they left on the bed! These adorable origami cranes and turtles.
Such a sweet touch!
So cute...

I didn't actually make it to the breakfast buffet
at The Okura Tokyo... but
I did treat myself to late-night room service!
And would you believe it? That Junmai sake
I had been practically begging to find...
was right here on the hotel menu!
For hotel-priced alcohol, it wasn't overly expensive either.
Some Tokyo hotels don't offer 24-hour room service
like they often do in Korea or China, so I made sure to check first.
Sure enough,
they served room service up until midnight.
The ice cream was delicious, and the salad was incredibly tasty too.

Pool & Amenities
The Okura Tokyo Hotel

As I mentioned earlier, The Okura Tokyo
consists of two separate buildings.
The lobby in the Prestige Wing is definitely larger and much more grand.

If you follow this corridor to head over to the Heritage Wing,

And just like that, you arrive at the lobby of the Heritage Wing,
absolutely oozing that classic, timeless Japanese aesthetic.
While the lobby itself is on the cozier, smaller side, the layout is incredibly compact and intuitive, making getting around a breeze.

The staff at The Okura Tokyo
didn't just show that typical, overly formal Japanese politeness;
they were genuinely warm, helpful, and carried themselves with such professional pride.
During my travels in Tokyo, I was actually surprised by how many places
didn't use English at all and strictly communicated in Japanese.
But here at The Okura Tokyo, every single staff member spoke English
incredibly well, which made our stay so seamless and comfortable.
They even helped us check on our taxi and kindly offered to snap a few photos for us!
I also noticed quite a few cars parked out front with their license plates covered.
Apparently, in Tokyo, cars with covered plates are often carrying high-profile guests who need their privacy—
like business tycoons, VIPs, or diplomats. It was so fascinating to see!
