are two very different experiences, leaving many travelers wondering

The short answer: Yes, absolutely! This is a timed-entry exhibition, and walk-ins are rarely accommodated.
Especially during weekends, Japanese holidays, and peak travel seasons, the most popular time slots sell out incredibly fast.
Because it's such a massive hit, I highly recommend securing your tickets the moment your Tokyo itinerary is locked in.
At first, I agonized over whether to visit Borderless or Planets. Looking at photos online, they both seemed like similar, albeit stunning, digital art installations.
But after digging deeper, I realized the core difference: Borderless is more about visually appreciating the art, whereas Planets is a fully tactile, full-body immersive experience.
Since I prefer interactive experiences over just standing and staring, I ultimately chose Planets!
Spoiler alert: I was absolutely blown away. I initially wondered if the price was a bit steep, but it was worth every penny. You aren't just looking at the art; you literally walk into it and become part of the space. (Plus, you can capture some incredibly dreamy photos 🪐)
Because the light, sound, and physical space are constantly shifting in real-time, the feeling you get in person is entirely different from what you see in pictures.
Without a doubt, the absolute highlight of teamLab Planets is the barefoot experience! Right at the entrance, you take off your shoes and socks. As you move through the exhibit, there are sections where you literally wade through knee-deep water.
I'll admit, wandering around a museum barefoot felt a little strange at first. But once I stepped in, it was incredibly fun. Feeling the temperature (it's pleasantly warm, around 85°F) and the texture of the water beneath your feet gives it a magical charm that standard museums just can't match.
I noticed a lot of families with kids and couples enjoying the space. Engaging all five senses rather than just your eyes makes this an absolute must-do.
