04 | Making it an Udon Tour |
Even though we had udon for lunch,
in Takamatsu, udon for dinner is a must!
it's practically mandatory, haha!
Once again, I consulted Google Maps ratings
and randomly stumbled upon this udon gem!
Ukaku Seimen : Rating ★4.4
I'll share the restaurant details at the very end of the post!
01 Midnight Diner Style
We dropped by around 7 PM on a Saturday evening.
I thought Takamatsu wasn't that crowded,
but maybe everyone was just here eating udon...
hahaha!

It had a total neighborhood midnight diner vibe,
this udon spot did,
and even though it was pretty tiny, there was a short wait.
What was also unique about this place
is that it *only* operates for evening udon service‼
It was the complete opposite of Udon Market Menkui,
where we went during the day, which was quite a surprise! 😮

And the best part? Zero other Koreans! Hehe.
Finding places like this always gives me such a thrill! 😙
Perhaps because it's only open in the evenings,
it was absolutely packed with locals,
and since the space itself is a bit compact,
we had a small wait before we could get in.
02 Ordering from a Vending Machine
Wow, I've used plenty of kiosks before,
but this was my first time ordering from a proper vending machine!

And honestly, the satisfying click of the buttons
was so much more satisfying than a touchscreen kiosk! ♡
It's like pressing mechanical keyboard keycaps!

Pretty extensive menu for such a small place, right?
The rustic, old-school shop we visited during the day,
Udon Market Menkui, had photos too, but I don't have them here. 😔
You could always just pick a menu item at random and trust your luck... 🤭

Just kidding, I actually put in a lot of effort to choose! 😉
Ukaku Udon has a unique system:
there are no small, medium, or large size options,
but you can add extra noodles (0.5 serving / 1 serving).
Pink buttons are for hot noodles, and light blue buttons are for cold noodles.

We even went to their website
and painstakingly compared photos one by one to make our choices...

And of course, it's cash only! ^^
03 Sautéed Chashu Pot Butter Udon
When I came to Takamatsu,
I really wanted to try that mentaiko butter udon!
But Ukaku Seimen didn't have it on their menu.
So, I went for something else with butter:
I ordered the Sautéed Chashu Pot Butter Udon.

The udon came with sautéed chashu, a generous pat of butter, green onions,
some pepper (I think?), and a raw egg.
Ooh, still looks absolutely delicious! 😋
Just crack the egg and quickly mix it all in!

While it didn't have that distinctive popping texture of mentaiko roe,
the char siu was incredibly smoky and flavorful,
and the noodles were wonderfully chewy. Plus, the portion was generous, so I still enjoyed it!
My boyfriend, who's usually a meat udon enthusiast,
ordered the same as me but declared that meat udon was still better... haha.

The restaurant's ambiance was lovely,
but I just couldn't forget the incredible impact of the meat udon I first had at Udon Ichiba Menkui,
and later on, I had an even more delicious
mentaiko butter udon elsewhere.
So, my rating for this one is around ★3.5?

I really, really should have tried
a different, soup-based udon
at Ukaku Seimen ㅠㅠㅠㅠ
It definitely would have been more delicious...
04 Enjoying Udon with a Tour
As someone with a very 'P' (perceiving) personality,
I'm happy to just wander into any udon shop
and enjoy my meal,
but if you want to comfortably explore several udon shops,
using an udon tour is also an option!

If you're interested, click on the blue text below
to see what programs are available.
| Program | Price | Recommended For |
1 | ~$18 ~ | Those who want to try making udon
2 | ~$153 ~ | Those who want to visit reliable, local-recommended udon spots on foot
3 | ~$160 ~ | Those who want to comfortably try udon restaurants located in the outskirts |
While there's a joy in exploring on your own like I did,
if you have a short itinerary, efficiently visiting several udon shops
with a tour seems like a great idea! 💛
If I ever go back to Takamatsu,
I'd love to try an udon taxi tour!
