02 Shodoshima: Places to Visit |
Shodoshima is famous as Japan's first
olive cultivation area,
and also well-known for its local specialties like soy sauce and somen noodles.

The island is 25 times the size of Udo Island (off Jeju), so
there are just as many places to visit.
Popular spots include Angel Road, Olive Park,
Kankakei Gorge, and soy sauce & somen noodle factories.
1️⃣ Angel Road
When low tide occurs on Shodoshima Island,
a sand path appears in the middle of the sea,
allowing you to walk to and from small islets.

It's not something you can see just any time,
so you need to plan your visit according to the tide schedule.
I also made Angel Road the main highlight of my trip.☺
2️⃣ Olive Park
Shodoshima has a mild climate,
allowing you to see olive trees and beautiful landscapes.
The broomsticks and windmill are famous, allowing you to take photos
like in the movie <Kiki's Delivery Service>.

You can also buy high-quality olive oil
at the olive souvenir shop.
3️⃣ Kankakei Gorge
Where unique rock formations blend with the Seto Inland Sea,
it's known as one of Japan's three great gorges –
Shodoshima's very own Kankakei Gorge!

You can take the ropeway up to higher elevations
and soak in the panoramic views of the surroundings.
If you visit during autumn foliage season, like now,
it would be absolutely breathtaking, wouldn't it?🍁
4️⃣ Soy Sauce & Somen Noodle Factories
Shodoshima is also famous for its soy sauce and somen noodles,
so many travelers seek out the local factories.

And get this – you can even try soy sauce ice cream!🧁
Shodoshima is the largest island in Kagawa Prefecture, where Takamatsu is located,
meaning there are plenty of attractions to discover.
However, these spots are quite spread out across the island.
Because of this, if you don't rent a car,
seeing absolutely everything might be
a bit of a challenge realistically.
That's why many visitors opt for a bus tour instead!

03 Naoshima Attractions |
Naoshima feels like it might be even more popular,
doesn't it? Haha!
Naoshima is an island of art renowned for its contemporary art and architecture.
With art museums and outdoor installations scattered across the island,
it's a must-visit destination for any art lover.
Some of the most popular spots include
the Chichu Art Museum, and the famous Yellow & Red Pumpkins.
1️⃣ Miyanoura Port & Red Pumpkin
Miyanoura Port is the first place you'll encounter upon arriving on Naoshima.

Here, you can admire outdoor artworks like Japanese contemporary artist Yayoi Kusama's
Red Pumpkin and the Naoshima Pavilion.
2️⃣ Honmura District
In Honmura, you can explore the 'Art House Project', where old private homes and buildings have been transformed into unique art spaces.
Each house showcases a different art installation!😧

For instance, Minamidera offers an immersive experience
with light-based artworks in a darkened space,
while the Ando Museum delves into the architectural works of Tadao Ando
and the fascinating history of Naoshima.
3️⃣ Chichu Art Museum
This art museum, designed by Tadao Ando,
is mostly built underground so as not to disrupt the natural scenery.

Here, you can admire Monet's masterpieces and captivating light installations!
4️⃣ Benesse House & Yellow Pumpkin
This is a place where you can appreciate art against the stunning backdrop of the Seto Inland Sea.

Yayoi Kusama's iconic Yellow Pumpkin is also located along this coast,
making it a quintessential photo spot on Naoshima.
It's truly wondrous how a single island can be transformed
into such a profound island of art!
Thankfully, Naoshima's attractions are grouped into zones,
making it relatively convenient to get around.
However, some museums require reservations, and
if you have professional explanations added by an expert,
your trip will surely be even more enriching!
That's why a tour with a local docent
private car tour is incredibly effective!

04 Shodoshima and Naoshima: Recommended for These Travelers |
Both islands can be visited from Takamatsu
as a day trip,
but it's difficult to leisurely explore both places
on a single day's itinerary.
So, if your travel itinerary is only for one day,
think about what kind of trip you want
before you decide.

Shodoshima
✔ Visit natural attractions like Angel Road and valleys
✔ Take Instagrammable photos at the Olive Park
✔ Explore local specialties such as olives, soy sauce, and somen noodles
👉 This sounds more fun < Click)
Naoshima
✔ Capture photos of the Red Pumpkin and Yellow Pumpkin
✔ Appreciate the works of Tadao Ando
✔ Visit museums like the Chichu Art Museum
👉 This is what I want to see more of < Click)
As for me, I have absolutely no interest in art 😅
so I chose a free and easy trip to Shodoshima.

Due to time constraints, I couldn't visit
the Olive Park and Soy Sauce Factory that I had planned,
and only managed to see Angel Road. Haha.
LOL, sigh...
If I go again, I'd love to tour Shodoshima
and definitely visit Naoshima too!
Ultimately, rather than one being "better" than the other,
it seems you should choose based on what you want to see more of.😀
Considering your Takamatsu travel itinerary and preferences,
choose the island that's right for you! 🏝️
