Alamo Rent A Car Switzerland Review Costs, Tips, and a 4-Day Road Trip Itinerary All rights reserved, J's Records |
If you're planning a trip to Switzerland in 2026, you've probably noticed that transportation costs are no joke.
We found ourselves constantly wondering: "Do we really have to pay this much for every single train ride?"
Trying to perfectly align our schedule with train timetables sounded stressful, and the price of the Swiss Travel Pass was incredibly steep (especially for a couple).
Plus, the mountain railways we actually wanted to ride required extra supplemental fees anyway!
Because of all this, my husband and I decided to ditch the trains and rent a car instead.

Spoiler alert:
Renting a car for our 4-day, 3-night Swiss getaway was the best decision we made!
We explored every corner of Switzerland—from Grindelwald and Interlaken to Zermatt—with ultimate freedom.
Today, I'm sharing our complete Alamo rental experience, from booking and pickup to drop-off.
If you're on the fence about driving in Switzerland,
you need to read this post.
I'm revealing our exact costs and how to score the lowest rates!
How to Book a Rental Car in Switzerland

Before reserving,
I compared several major rental companies in Switzerland,
and Alamo stood out as the clear winner.
✔ Tons of reviews praising their clean, well-maintained fleet
✔ Super straightforward pickup and drop-off process
✔ Great selection of compact and mid-size vehicles
✔ Excellent value for the price
Whenever I travel internationally, I always book my rentals through Klook.
The reason is simple...
They offer the cheapest rates and make it incredibly easy to add full-coverage insurance!

Renting a car in Switzerland was surprisingly affordable.
Even when adding up the rental fee, gas, and parking,
it was still significantly cheaper than buying train passes.
We definitely made the right call!
If you're comfortable behind the wheel, driving is absolutely the way to go.
Alamo Rental Car Experience
Geneva Airport Pickup/Drop-off

Our itinerary started the moment we landed at Geneva Airport,
where we picked up the car and headed straight for Zermatt.
Picking up an Alamo rental at Geneva Airport
is much easier than you might think.
📍 Alamo Pickup Process
① After arrivals, follow the "Car Rental" signs
② At the Alamo booth,
hand over your Passport / International Driving Permit (IDP) / Booking Confirmation
③ Sign the paperwork and authorize a ~$770 security deposit hold on your credit card
④ Get your keys and take the shuttle bus to the parking garage
⑤ Inspect the vehicle's condition & fuel level
⑥ Take photos & videos of the entire car (crucial!)

⚠️ Required Documents to Pack
Original International Driving Permit (IDP)
Original Driver's License from your home country
Original Passport
Booking Confirmation (Printed or screenshot)
The staff were incredibly friendly and spoke great English, so communication was a breeze.
I was also relieved they didn't aggressively push any upsells.
(If they do offer extra insurance, just say no! Your Klook coverage has your back.)

We were assigned a Renault Megane (equivalent to a VW Golf).
The trunk easily swallowed our two large suitcases,
and the car was spotless inside and out. We were thrilled!
💡 Pro-Tip for Choosing a Vehicle
Traffic fines in Switzerland are notoriously astronomical.
To help avoid accidental speeding or handling issues, I highly recommend renting a car similar in size and style to what you drive at home. Familiarity goes a long way on foreign roads!

Also, the very first thing you should do before driving off
is thoroughly document the car's condition with photos and videos.
Even with full-coverage insurance, it's always best to have proof just in case!

We definitely got our money's worth out of the rental during our 4-day trip.
Here was our jam-packed itinerary:
Day 1
Geneva Airport → Zermatt → Grindelwald
Day 2
Interlaken → Grindelwald
Day 3
Blausee Lake → Interlaken → Grindelwald
Day 4
Grindelwald → Geneva Airport
If we had used train passes for this route,
it would have cost us nearly ~$770 per person!
By driving, we saved a ton of money,
pulled over whenever we saw a breathtaking view,
and made easy grocery runs to local supermarkets.
It truly felt like
the ultimate independent travel experience.
** Note: We did have to buy a separate Jungfrau Travel Pass for the mountain peaks, but you have to buy that even if you have a Swiss Travel Pass. We also bought a separate train ticket for the final car-free stretch into Zermatt, but we still saved massively on the overall transit costs.
How to Drop Off at Geneva Airport

Dropping off the car was just as seamless as picking it up.
📍 Drop-off Process
① Fill up the gas tank at a station near the airport
② Park in the same rental lot where you picked it up
③ Do a quick visual check of the exterior
④ Return the keys & do a brief check with the staff
We had an early flight and returned the car at 6:00 AM.
Thankfully, unmanned drop-off is available, making it totally stress-free.

The ~$770 security deposit hold
automatically dropped off my credit card 2-3 days later.
As long as there's no damage and you return it with a full tank, you have nothing to worry about.
This was our first time renting a car in Switzerland,
and the entire process from start to finish was incredibly smooth.
I highly recommend Alamo!

The absolute biggest advantage of having a car in Switzerland
is the pure flexibility.
You travel on your own schedule, to the places you want, for as long as you want!
If a viewpoint is stunning, you can linger a little longer.
If you're exhausted, you can head straight back to your hotel.
Not to mention, running to the grocery store late at night
and exploring neighboring towns is so effortless!
Once you experience this kind of freedom,
you'll definitely want to rent a car for your next Swiss vacation, too.
