only to find you have to pay ~$0 for a scale?

Many travelers get a bit flustered trying to weigh their suitcases before their return flight from Bangkok Suvarnabhumi International Airport (BKK). I certainly did!

With budget airlines, checked luggage often has a limit of around 33 lbs, and carry-on typically caps at 22 lbs.

After stocking up on all those amazing Thai souvenirs like toothpaste and soaps, my luggage weight was right on the edge.

Just like at other airports, I went looking for a scale to check my bags before heading to check-in. But the first one I found, right in front of me, required a payment of ~$0 to operate! What a surprise!

Is it just me, or does paying to weigh your luggage feel like a waste of money? So, I started my quest to find a free scale!

1. Why the Scale Near Gate 7 Isn't Free

I initially searched around Gate 7 on the 4th-floor departure level. I spotted a luggage wrapping service, and right next to it, there was a scale.

However, this scale wasn't owned by the airport itself. It belonged to a private luggage wrapping service.

🔸 Important: You'll need coins to activate the screen and use the scale!

2. Suvarnabhumi Airport's Free Luggage Scale Location

The free scales provided by the airport aren't found near the regular gates. Instead, they're located in the Oversized Baggage area.

🔸 Location: On the departure level (4th floor), walk past the airline check-in counters and continue towards the direction of the arrivals hall.

You'll then see the Oversize Baggage Drop counter, as shown in the photo.

🔸 Cost: FREE (Always accessible)

🔸 How to Find It:

1. From the 4th-floor departure lobby, face the main check-in counters and walk along the inner corridor.

2. Look for the dedicated counter for oversized baggage (like golf bags, musical instruments, large boxes) and you'll find a large floor-standing scale in front of it.

3. There's no coin slot; simply place your luggage on the scale, and the digital display will instantly show the weight.

✔️ You might also find a scale in front of the self-bag drop machines near the Q counters.

3. Summary & Tips

What if the check-in counters aren't open yet?

It's most efficient to use the free scale at the Oversized Baggage counter first to adjust your bag's weight before heading to your airline's check-in.

Even outside of regular counter operating hours, the scales typically remain powered on, allowing you to freely check your luggage weight.
